When you are rebuilding, you can’t afford to miss on the first round and you better do in depth research. I have heard that wasn’t done here because they thought they could get a couple down in price.
Again, I like Elias, but fans trust him way too much. Same posters singing the praises of Joe Jordan as he pissed away numerous drafts. So you're saying if Elias had done more research on Kjerstad he would have known about the heart condition before the draft? Was there readily available evidence Kjerstad had a heart problem? Did other teams come out and say they were going to pass on him because of a heart condition?
Do you think the team doctors who did a physical on him before signing his contract didn't do an in-depth job for some reason?
You wouldn't have made this thread if we'd drafted Austin Martin and he came down with a heart condition. You're mad that Elias didn't pick a guy that publications (who by the way know less about most prospects than any major league team) thought was about six picks higher than the guy we took. And because you're mad, you've decided that everything that goes wrong with Heston Kjerstad is a black mark on Elias.
I'm sure if Kjerstad tripped walking down some stairs and had to miss the season because of a compound fracture, you'd probably be mad that Elias didn't properly test Kjerstad's coordination before signing him.Consider that you're talking about something you know nothing about and should stop.

It's kind of lose/lose with Zach Pop. Either he pitches really well and the Marlins keep him or he pitches really crappy and they offer him back, suggesting he isn't good and a future piece
-
FYI, Tony, you still have Grayson in High A
-
It's a bad game. I hear Babe Ruth had some of those

Leyla is a career .149 MLB hitter. Lots of guys hit in the minors and can’t in the majors. The only person blocking him is him. He’s a nobody.
Wilkerson made an error today but has been playing well over all. He is worth 2 OAA so far, whereas Mr Galvis is minus 5, so let’s not call for Stevie’s head just yet.
Yeah, in like 60 at bats over two seasons. Might want to give him a little more of a chance before we decide he can't hit in the majors (although I doubt his abilities, too)

I thought he was mostly 91-93

So that one was on Akin, not Nevin?

The trade was good.

Otherwise, you have to rate the process. The Orioles trades a few months of Manny and got back a guy who was a top 50 prospect, a UtI prospect, a very good BP arm prospect and a starting pitcher prospect.
Its not DDs fault that Elias was a moron when he exposed Pop.
Kremer has come to the majors and been up and down. We don’t know his future.
Diaz has been hurt but when healthy, he has been a good player and still had good upside.
Bannon is an unknown but is progressing nicely.
So, not only was the trade itself fine, the idea that anyone is talking about closing the book on it is absurd. We don’t have anywhere near a conclusion to this story.
There is another thread about how the Bundy trade is looking better. Really? So, this trade is terrible even though 2 of the players are in the majors and 2 others are knocking on the door but the Bundy trade looks better because in a SSS this year he sucks and a few of the players we got, again in a SSS, are performing very well. But if they fizzle out, will that trade still look better?
Dude, I 100% agree we can't judge the trade on results. Process is everything. I'm not saying we shouldn't have done the deal at the time. I'm saying right now I'd probably trade Diaz, Kremer and Bannon for a supplemental first round pick. None of those three look like nuggets and at least the pick has a chance to be one
-
On paper at the time, sure. Results since have been pretty disappointing. I'd likely trade the entire haul for a supplemental 1st round draft pick at this point

DD really messed this one up. In fact, the whole deadline of selling off that year.
Diaz - Always hurt. Still hasn’t really established himself above AA.
Valera - UTIl fodder
Kremer - “led MILB in K’s” now he’s leading in the MLB in highest ERA.
Pop - Lost in the Rule 5 draft after having TJ. Was he hurt when we traded for him?
Bannon - UTIL IF at best, that can’t play SS.
Hate to say it, but yeah. It's still a little early to close the book on this one, but it's looking like we got solid nothing for Machado. Didn't expect a king's ransom for half a season of him, but I expected better than nothing

Glad to hear the velocity is up, because last time he was pitching the velocity was like 88-91, IIRC
-
I think I've seen enough of Shawn Armstrong

-
Not sure what they see with Waddell. Only scouting report I can find on the guy is from like three years ago and calls him a "four-pitch pitchability lefty who has trouble commanding his pitches." His professional walk rate is like 5-something.
-
You know, every time I think about the runner on second base rule, I keep thinking about 5/6/2012 (Chris Davis pitches and gets the win) and how that game wouldn't have been possible with that rule. To me, that game was the turning point for the Orioles that kicked off our five-year run. Only game I've watched where I was in tears at the end.
I understand the benefits of having a runner on second. But if the cost is no more games like that one, I don't think I'll ever be fully on board with it- 1
-
Would it have been a perfect game if it was a passed ball instead?
-
Armstrong I get, but with Lakins are you guys in favor of cutting any reliever with back to back bad outings, or just ones with a limited track record?
-
So is he going in the rotation? He's had most of his professional experience as a reliever, which makes me think maybe not. Plutko to rotation?
Eh, most likely there will be a different move for a starter

Sure is easy from the couch right?
Well, I'm pretty sure I couldn't strike him out myself
But man is he a hacker. I guess we've been missing that since Jones and Schoop left
-
If I were pitching to Ryan Mountcastle, I'd never throw anything in the zone once I had two strikes on him. Actually, I might never throw him a strike
-
What the hell did Mountcastle just swing at?
-
I define "ace" as a starting pitcher who consistently maintains a sub-3.00 ERA, or roughly the top 5-10 pitchers in the league.
I define "starting pitcher" as someone who can get through 5+ innings on a regular basis without totally imploding. The below definitions assume the previous statement
#1 starter: 80th percentile starting pitcher ERA
#2 starter: 60th percentile ERA
#3 starter: 40th percentile ERA
#4 starter: 20th percentile ERA
#5 starter: the rest
-
Not a fan of sticking him in the bullpen. Would rather see him in the rotation

-
I feel like our guys should be taking the first four pitches then swinging vs. this guy...
-
I think it has to be between Means, Hays and Mountcastle. My guess is Means because of Hays's health issues and Mountcastle probably being a first baseman long-term
I guess Mancini could be a dark horse

So if you have so much information about the whole situation, why didn't you lead with that?
