If you're pulling Burnes, who was DEALING, you don't care about winning the game. If you don't care about winning the game, you bring in whoever needs to throw.

By whoever needs to throw I assume you mean Baker.  It's hard to see Hyde going straight to Baker unless the O's were down by a few runs.  People are getting up in arms over something that had zero good options in a close game in Yankee Stadium.  Bring back Cole Irvin as the early innings reliever -- seriously that may be the best answer for now.

He brought Cano in for the 4th time in 5 games to face 3 guys that all had batted balls over 100 MPH against him on Tuesday. They all reached base and then he proceeded to bring in a guy with walk issues (who also had thrown 4 times in the last 5 games) with the bases loaded, who not surprisingly walked a run in. It’s not his fault they sucked, but that’s not a good spot for Cano and both guys have pitched a lot lately.

But in Hyde's defense -- who should he have brought there in instead?  I guess maybe Baker but in only a one run game in Yankee Stadium he's certainly not ideal either.  A lot of relievers have been used lately.  Elias needs to construct a better bullpen next season and beyond.

What’s better: waving the white flag and driving Cano into the ground further or using your bullpen somewhat respectfully to give some guys some rest?

If the plan was to have Burnes only throw 70ish pitches, then call up a long reliever.

I'm sure Hyde was not waving the white flag.  I don't like to second guess Hyde too much but I agree it did seem odd to bring in Cano there.

they really need better pen arms next year...maybe two good ones...we have a mediocre pen..

Definitely.  Maybe Suarez goes into the pen, but you never know if he's needed in the rotation again.  Who knows if Wells comes back?

Tony just doesn't seem to be seeing the ball well from Cole tonight

Coming into this game Santander has a career .148 AVG and a .208 OBP against Cole in 27 ABs.  O'Hearn has even worse numbers but he at least as hit a HR off of him.

I wonder if the coaches/management sees this as an opportunity for Adley to get some more experience/attempts at timing up Cole before the playoffs. Kind of like practice.

Not against Cole specifically but more at bats in general I guess.  I'd rather see Emmanuel Rivera DH over Adley at this point.  To be fair Kjerstad hasn't hit that much since he's returned either.

Can’t stand to watch Adley hit now.  Reminds me of Wieters.  Lots of balls 20 feet from the warning track.

Yeah against a righty I'd rather see Kjerstad DH when Adley's not behind the plate.  And Adley doesn't have strong career numbers against Cole anyway.  Adley feels like he's due, but he's been slumping a long time now.

I can understand a solo HR when you are up 4-0. His HRs always appear to come early in games when the game is close.

Top 25 is not good enough for an ace on a playoff team.

Burnes' HR9 has been better than Gerrit Cole's 4 out of the 5 last seasons.  So I guess Cole is not good enough for an ace on a playoff team either.  And it's not Burnes' fault the O's aren't up 4-0.  First they need to get a single hit.

Burnes is good, but he's prone to the HR ball at the wrong times.

Wrong time?  There was no one on base early in the game?  And his HR9 is only 1 -- Top 25 in the league.

    Wondering the same thing.

O'Hearn, Rutschman and Santander do not have good career numbers against Cole.  Seems like this could have been a good game to sit one of them for Kjerstad.

Yeah it is Hyde’s fault he brought a guy in with a 9-3 lead.  He should be using his high leverage guys in that situation right.

Not his high leverage guys but just perhaps not his lowest leverage guy in the bottom of the 9th in Yankee Stadium.
