  1. Some baseball news! Some Orioles baseball news!! Sorta... Miguel Castro plans to resume facing live hitters this week in the Dominican Republic. Castro has had a long layoff from game action, with his last Grapefruit League appearance coming on March 6, but he's continued to train and throw bullpen sessions. Even with no clear plan for when the 2020 season will begin, Castro is trying to stay ready. The 25-year-old posted a 4.66 ERA with 71 strikeouts and 41 walks over 73 1/3 innings with the Orioles last season and was set to serve in a middle relief role prior to the shutdown. https://www.rotoworld.com/baseball/mlb/player-news
  2. Oh come on now, he didn't choose his favorite teams name, disagree with him, but don't find an back handed way to suggest he is racist just because he likes alliteration. Back to the subject at hand, I keep reading July for the start of the season. I for one do hope they find a safe way to get games going, really need to see some baseball. Also, has there been any mention of what starting the MLB season would mean for minor league players, is it a forgone conclusion that there will be no minor league seasons no matter what they do with MLB?
  3. https://www.rotoworld.com/baseball/mlb/player/15868/manny-ramirez Manny Ramirez told the Taiwan Times that he is hoping to sign with a Chinese Professional Baseball League team for the 2020 season. Manny turns 48 years old next month and last appeared in a major league game way back in 2011, though he did suit up for the Kochi Fighting Dogs in Japan in 2017, and he had some success with the EDA Rhinos of the CPBL in 2013. "My goal for 2020, is to find a roster spot in the CPBL," he said. "I have been itching to get back in the batter’s box and be able to compete again. I know if I was given the opportunity to come in an organization as a player-coach, it would do great things for the organization and the league. When I arrived in 2013, attendances nearly quadrupled overnight. That means, there is love for the game and the fans will come but the owners must bring what the fans want."
  4. Lee May? Remember him moving like crazy up until he started his swing.
  5. Yea makes sense. I think that is why he tried to come back as a 53 year old to convince everyone that if he could do it at that age, he didn't need the juice anyway. He did put a nice .919OPS at that age in independent AA, still pretty impressive even with limited playing time.
  6. Man I wish Raffy had played clean and could go into the Hall. Think he would go in as an Oriole?
  7. We played the Mets and Piazza was catching?
  8. Sleep well and dream of large women!
  9. This was a great baseball discussion to read, really needed this, best lunch break reading in a while. Thanks guys! The thing I remember about Kevin Bass is always swung a pink bat or is that just my memory playing tricks on me and I only remember him hitting on mothers day?
  10. Full disclaimer, I have not read the most recent proposal, but my first thought was Arizona has 16 MLB size stadiums? Or I am guessing multiple games a day at the stadiums which qualify, but do they even have enough for that? Edit: Doh! Spring training stadiums. As soon as I hit submit it dawned on me....
  11. Just have to throw this out there, because how often is a famous person connected to one's family.... My daughter has Kaline blood! Ok, no directly Al Kaline's blood, but her grandmother (my mother in law) is Florence Kaline, cousin to Al Kaline. She did have enough of a connection to the family that we did get to meet him once at OPACY when he was broadcasting for the Tigers. He was very gracious and signed autograph's and took pictures with us. My mother in law's family is large so it was like 20+ of us there, but still was really a unique moment that I will never forget. And I have a picture of my daughter (she was too young to remember) with him. We were sorry to hear of his passing.
  12. I think I read this somewhere (and no, I don't have a link, so full disclaimer this is on my completely unreliable memory), that Covid-19 can live in up to 130 degrees heat. Everyone move to death valley?
  13. I really can't tell if I should be impressed or not: https://www.nbcsports.com/washington/orioles/orioles-prospect-grayson-rodriguez-clears-lake-during-insane-long-toss-session https://publish.twitter.com/?query=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2FG_Rodriguez16%2Fstatus%2F1245845502593249282&widget=Tweet Edit: Tried to put the embedded tweet here, but that only works in the main forum I guess?
  14. I was 19, was terribly hungover and didn't want to go, but my friends were not having it (pretty sure they were enjoying my suffering since it wasn't them), but that game definitely got the blood flowing and so glad I went.
  15. I was at Wilson Alveraz no hitter against us, last game I saw at memorial stadium. The whole crowd was cheering for Alvarez to do it by the 8th and 9th innings.
  16. How did I never know about this? Then looked it up and saw it was when he was with the Dodgers. Some funny comments in this short article about the fight: https://www.pennlive.com/philadelphiasports/2007/03/lenny_dykstra_vs_rick_dempsey.html
  17. Without looking, I do remember Mussina having another monster game in the playoffs against the Indians in 96 or 97. Don't think he struck out 15, but remember him being ridiculously dominate. Have to cook dinner or would look it up now. But, fun thread @Moose Milligan Thanks.
  18. I would like to hear more from the veteran (nice way of saying old ) posters who were actively following the O's during this time. Seems like a fairly large trade for two teams which were both doing well, just seems like a trade which never would happen these days. @Frobby @SteveA, others have thoughts?
  19. Sitting stuck in my house for what seems to be something out of a twilight zone episode yet another long day (or Groundhog day), while reading this exchange between you and @spiritof66 was very enjoyable. I was picturing Pickles (where I have been elbow stabbed many a time as you two described the jammed bar) and the recounting of that awful game was still more enjoyable than no baseball at all! Well maybe...anyway, thanks to you both.
  20. Nice camera angle. Wish we could see that more often.
  21. Bundy still looking Good: Dylan Bundy recorded four strikeouts over 3 1/3 scoreless frames Wednesday in a Cactus League start versus the Mariners. Bundy scattered one hit and completely flummoxed a Mariners’ lineup that featured an overwhelming majority of their big-league regulars. The 27-year-old righty has been one of the most impressive pitchers in the Cactus League so far this spring, reeling off 7 1/3 scoreless innings with a sublime 11/1 K/BB ratio across three starts. He’s firmly entrenched in the Angels’ Opening Day rotation and represents a decent late-round, buy-low investment in deeper mixed leagues.
  22. You took the bait. ? Seriously, always enjoy your historical perspective. But, tell me this was not all from memory and you had to look some of it up, at least the stats! Ted Williams was probably similar to the Albert Belle snub I would guess. Not loved by the media so I am sure that played into it some.
  23. Not to totally derail this thread, but went back to look at Martinez's stats, well just because and in 1995 he and Albert Belle both of 7.0bWar were beat out by 4.3bWar Mo Vaughn for the MVP. What a sham. I guess because Vaughn was a Redsox, the writers hated Belle and Martinez was "just" a DH, but that's terrible. I am sure @DrungoHazewood knows dozens of other examples which are just as or even worse that than that slight, but it just caught my eye. To keep it on Davis, I love that he has bulked up and his making contact, but I still do not believe it is real...at all. And I don't want him to fail, just don't see how this could be possible after the last 2+ years.
  24. I've had my issues with him too, but this season and now this game has reset it all....at least for me. Man, I still can't believe they came back. Especially with what Turg said at the post game interview. Nothing went right for them at all tonight and that is so true.
  25. It's because Turg couldn't hear your heated, key pounding keyboard. ?
