He went 7.0 innings and gave up 2 runs on 7 hits with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. Palmer surrendered a homerun to Jim Fregosi. Paul Blair, Brooks Robinson and Frank Robinson all went yard for the Birds; Blair finished the game by going 2 for 5 with 1 run scored and 3 RBI.   7. #50THANNIVERSARY On this day in 1970 the Baltimore Orioles split a double header with the New York Yankees. Playing their second double header in four days, the Birds lost Game 1 6-4 in 11 innings and won Game 2 12-9. In Game 1 the Yankees tied the game in the bottom of the 9th when Roy White's RBI single scored John Ellis and Horace Clarke. It was Roy White's 2 run homerun off of Dick Hall that walked the game off for the Yankees. For the game, White went 3 for 6 with 1 run scored and 4 RBI. Paul Blair, Merv Rettenmund and starter Jim Palmer each tallied 2 hits off Yankees pitching. BOX SCORE Game 2 also went 11 innings and was won with three runs scored by the Birds in the top of the 11th. Don Buford started the scoring with an RBI single, scoring Frank Robinson, who had doubled ahead of him. Brooks Robinson's bunt single scored Buford and Merv Rettenmund's RBI single finished out the scoring. Dave Leonhard pitched a 1-2-3 11th inning to finish the game and earn the save, his first. Don Buford led the way for the Orioles with a 4 for 6, 1 double, 3 runs scored, 2 RBI game. John Ellis went 2 for 6 with a homerun, 1 run scored and 2 RBI for the Yankees. BOX SCORE

McNally surrendered 11 hits, walked 2 and struckout 7. Boog Powell (1 for 2, 1 R, 2 RBI) and Merv Rettenmund (2 for 4, 1 R, 1 RBI) both homered. They were 0.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins (62-36) for the AL's best record. During the month of July the Orioles had a 17-11 record.
