How are they going to utilize a guy with such bad numbers? Surely they won’t have him join the rotation after his rehab is up based solely on past success. I bet he gets shut down again before it’s over.

I haven’t watched every single at bat, the ones I have seen have been bad. I didn’t check the EV on his hit, I’ve been corrected. It was technically a hard hit ball. Looked it like it squeezed through a hole in the infield to me, but 101 is technically a hard hit ball so I concede. I feel like reiterating, I think he’s going to be a very good player. Not sure why everyone here is so against being critical on someone who has hit worse than any active major league hitter in the same time frame. Isn’t it safe to just make the statement that Jackson Holliday has been bad at baseball? Sure he’ll be fine, but so far he hasn’t been. God forbid you say it out loud. I’m not even panicked about him as a player. Almost every rookie struggles in a similar fashion. They’re not all hyped to the degree that Holliday is though, so of course he will put under a different microscope.

I mean, I have watched a good amount of his at bats. Weak contact or a strike out. His one hit was not hit hard, his walk came right after Paddack was noticeably rattled by the Westburg home run and his fly out to deep center-right was the first time I’ve seen him hit a major league pitch with any authority whatsoever. I’ll say I’m with everyone in the thread that he should be out there every day for a while and let him work it out. But let’s not put lipstick on this pig, he is doing extraordinarily terrible right now.

I have high hopes from Holliday, but my near term expectations have gone down significantly. He doesn’t look to have a lot of control over his swing, his eye doesn’t seem great, and he is a defensive liability. Do I think he’ll have a great career? Yeah, probably. But he looks every bit 20 years old. Luckily the team is good enough to carry him. Not trying to be sour about him, it’s just quite surprising the level of terrible I have seen from him. I knew he wouldn’t be an all star out of the gate, I knew he’d have some struggles, but it’s hard to believe the amount of hype this kid has been given. Absolutely terrible. Again, small sample size and I think he’ll be fine in the long run…just not looking good at all right now.

Hays in the lineup is fine with me, it’s not like Santander is hitting and Hays is better with the glove. I’m a little bit more bothered at the incessant push to get Henderson in the lead off spot. He doesn’t really get on base. Put Rutschman there even if he’s slow, or even Westburg or Cowser. Even going back to Mullins vs RHP is a better option than Henderson and his sub-.300 OBP.

Hate to say it but I agree. He needs a breather.

I think it’s no secret that Burnes will be elsewhere this time next year. He knows that, the organization knows that, I hope most fans know that. Just because he’s currently on the team doesn’t mean he has to be some kind boot licker.

Disappointing start to his career to put it lightly, but he’ll be fine. I didn’t get to watch the game tonight, but in the previous games he’s looked completely overwhelmed and judging the 3 Ks tonight, I imagine it was more of the same. Hopefully he gets the first one out of the way soon, I can’t imagine the pressure he is feeling. Extremely young, highly touted, straight to a playoff caliber team, son of a well known player…I don’t doubt that the struggles are in his head right now. But good lord, what a train wreck these first 3 games have been.

Not terrible, I’d prefer Mateo over Urías. Urías looks a mess this year. If you’re going to have Adley play as much as Hyde does, he’s gonna need a lot of days at DH. The only thing I’d change is maybe putting Cowser in CF, but it’s not a big deal.

First I said Holliday and then thought…nah, he’s unfortunately probably going to be a Sept call up. Then I thought Kjerstad but then tried fitting him in somewhere and there’s no where for him to play unless Cowser takes over CF which is unlikely. So I went with Norby, he could probably fill in the role of DH vs LHP and he’s had a lot of time at AAA that it’s pretty unreasonable at this point that he hasn’t been given a chance yet.

A trade of a productive vet seems like a counter productive move. I think you’ll either see an unproductive vet or a blocked prospect moved. Norby, an outfielder, maybe even Mayo…or someone like a struggling Urias or Hays.

I’m annoyed, but I understand it’s just one game at the beginning of the season. Cowser is not McKenna and I hope he is not utilized as such. My dislike of today’s lineup has a lot to do with Mountcastle hitting clean up vs a right handed SP. That is what cost Cowser a spot in the lineup and Mountcastle is not a great enough hitter for me to think he should be in there every day. Maybe he’ll prove me wrong, he’s still fairly young. But last year he was abysmal vs RHP. He just isn’t the slugger we all want him to be. Watch, he’ll hit a couple home runs today because I’m whining about it. But I’d much rather see Cowser in RF, O’Hearn at 1B, and Santander at DH.

Cowser needs to be sent down until there is an opportunity for him. That is ridiculous. What a waste of talent to just sit.

Hopefully Mountcastle is a platoon player until he has proven otherwise. His splits last year were atrocious. Otherwise Cowser is riding the bench all year and I think both Hyde and Elias would agree that is a terrible idea.

I predict about 130 innings for Means and a handful of starts for Bradish before he’s shut down for the year.

My preference would be to see him play everyday in RF with Santander at DH. Put Westburg at 2B and let Mateo ride the bench. Who would be a better hitter, Mateo vs lefties or Cowser vs lefties? Cowser would undoubtedly be an upgrade in RF and the difference between Mateo and Westburg 2B defense is probably marginal enough that whatever superiority Mateo has with the glove is negated by Cowsers better defense and Mateo and his noodle bat out of the lineup.

Weird lineup, but whatever. It’s Opening Day, can’t be too upset!

You sound like a jackass. I’m disappointed too but I’m also happy that two of the biggest contenders in the league that had recent pitching injuries didn’t get better.
