I was driving in my car this weekend and heard our new announcer Ben Wagner do a couple of innings of play-by-play, and also participate in an in-game interview of Mike Elias.  SSS, but he struck me as a solid pro.  You can kind of tell he’s new, as he sounded more like a guy doing a national broadcast than a guy doing a home team broadcast.  Which is fine.

Anyone else have any initial impressions of Wagner?  He used to do Blue Jays games.

I thought the same about the national broadcast bit. Hopefully that grows over time.

I like the radio guys to have an interesting voice or delivery, something both Hollander and Arnold have. Wagner is a bit of a straight man, though he seems good at his job.

I was there too.  Bleacher seats with the family.  The natives were getting restless after his first 2 ABs...  Glad he got #1 out of the way!  Because I'm confident the boo birds were coming.

Nobody is going to boo the number one prospect after his first 4 games. They wouldn’t even do that in Philly.

Burnes picked a bad day to be mediocre...he wont make the 6th...

Why not? Our bullpen has been crushed the last few days. If he gets out of this less than 90 he should be back out there.

How much does that hot dog cost? $20. 😂

I think I saw burgers for $22 on Friday so $20 wouldn’t surprise me.

The Charleston Riverdogs had a great dog that was very similar looking for $10 back in 2015 when I was down there. Well worth it.

  5. My two thoughts are A-Hyde also seemed upset in that incident and B-while I didn’t hear Ben’s comments, I’m sure he gets good info from the locker room and wouldn’t just speculate wildly.

I’m also CERTAIN that he didn’t simply “forget” that pitch com exists as one poster postulated.

If you can’t see “special” in Gunnar Henderson, then I suggest A) either watching more baseball or B) watching some of his MANY highlights from last season.

Just curious would you be willing to name 5 short stops that would rather have in MLB than Gunnar?

All I can come up with are a Wit, Bitchette, Seager, Betts. Maybe I’m missing someone? And some of those can be argued. But the list is VERY short.

I think Bichette would be the over rated one in that group, though he is very good. I’d take Gunnar over Witt too, though he’s off to a great start this year.

Ben Macdonald alluded to something being off with their at bats yesterday and now today…is there merit to what Ben was talking about today?

I was most interested to see Hyde getting into it a bit. There was definitely something everyone was aware of. He wasn’t telling Adames to get his “back-a**” in the box

I agree with you about his fielding. That is bothering me more than the hitting at this point. But, I think he will get through it. Cowser looked shaky in CF last year as well when he first got called up

Have there been a bunch of plays he’s blown that I’ve missed? There were the two pop ups where one was probably not even his ball. Anything else? He’s looked competent on his ground ball chances to me.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree.  It could be the incredibly immature decision to nit understand he maybe has no idea what he will want 5 years from now and could well be a completely different person.  Then again, maybe he knows he has a wife that will tolerate whatever he does.  There definitely are many of these types of wives in sports.

I have no clue what you’re trying to say, but I gather you have a very different view on marriage than JH does. Who is to say you’re right and he’s wrong?

Unfortunately there is no pick for second place, and only one PPI pick per team, so even if we have ROY and #3 MVP different players we would get only one pick I believe.

Fair enough, but on the other hand, Holliday coming in second this year opens him up for some MVP considerations in a few years.

This is my expectation. The Orioles will want to save face that Jackson was not ready and bat him ninth. I don’t think it sends a good message a prospect wasn’t ready and 2 weeks later batting lead off.

This is such a cynical idea, that they’d put him somewhere in the order out of personal pride. First of all, Hyde makes the lineup card, not Elias. Second of all, how many rookies come up and are immediately slotted into a top of the order spot? Adley and Gunnar both batted 6th their first game and Manny was 9th.

That would be the polite way to describe it. Oddly enough, I thought Brown had kept the awkward non-baseball chatter to a minimum so far this year.

He was mocking BM. It wasn’t amusing or cute. His cultural references often seem forced, but his needling was arrogant and pompous.

    I switched broadcasts.

Get a grip, he absolutely was not mocking him. Was it awkward? Sure. Was it not great tv? Sure. KB was being himself and Ben was being himself, that’s what you get sometimes.

1983 = over 40 years ago under a totally different structure/era of baseball.

Surely there have to be more recent, relevant examples?

Really every championship team will have a guy or two in the Urias/Mateo/Hays mold. The question is going to be how much playing time will they get as the season goes on. From a quick run through the last 6 or 7 WS groupings, it looks like 1 guy with a sub .700 OPS getting ~300PA and that's usually a catcher or utility guy.

It’s ok. It’s not really a small sample size with him, Mullins or Hays.

You’ve got a real thing for Mullins. It’s really not fair to compare him to the other two. Mullins has shown the ability to be an elite player, or if that was an aberration at least very good. And it isn’t like there is a CF knocking on the door.
