Do you want to pay him $20+M to essentially DH? If the attitude of the O's ownership is to tie player salaries to attendance and the O's are, as we have discussed extensively here, a small market team; do you spend that cash on a DH who's likely to give you 2-3 WAR?
I wouldn't do that.
Who wants to pay him $20M?

Given the existence of the DH, I would not expect Mountcastle to be traded.
I would expect both O'Hearn and Mountcastle back next season. O'Hearn will be in his 3rd season of arbitration, but with a $1.4M salary in 2023, I don't expect his salary to be prohibitive. Mountcastle will be in his first season of arbitration.
If they need to trade someone at the deadline because everyone is playing well to make room then so be it, but you don't create a hole in the offseason that you hope to be able to be able to fill it by June.
Totally agree here. Mountcastle has really come on strong and I think it’s a question of what value would he bring back in a trade? I think less than he could provide staying here.

He's always gotten outs at that velo. The issue is his command, likely.
He’s also given up a ton of homers at that velo. I’d way rather the 2021 number.

I'm having a hard time reconciling why someone who's 6'8" and 265 lbs has a hard time making it through an MLB season without tiring.
True, he's never been asked to throw this many innings before, except back in 2018. But if I'm the Orioles I'm putting him on a strict conditioning plan for this offseason so he can throw more innings next year. I don't see why he can't be someone that can give 180+ innings.
BTW, I wouldn't be banking on him for a rotation spot either due to his conditioning issues. Maybe there's nothing that can be done to get him to throw more innings, maybe this is just who he really is.
I guess size to velocity isn’t 1:1 but I’ve always wondered why he can’t throw the ball faster.

The bottom of this list is striking:
25. Toronto
26. Oakland
27. Atlanta
28. Los Angeles Angels
29. Kansas City
30. Houston
Yikes KC and Oakland. Guess they better keep selling.

To be filed in the “searching for explanations” camp:
Is it possible that Adley is selectively deciding when to actively go after pitches with his best effort? Something of an energy saving and career lengthening move? Don’t go all out on blocking a pitch with the team up or down by 5 runs, for example.
No clue, just a thought.

Mullins always seemed like a quickness guy vs straight line speed. Brian Roberts wasn’t terribly fast either but got to his speed quickly. Still, surprised Mullins is that low.

I would think that either Mountcastle or O'Hearn are headed out of town with Mayo and Kjerstad almost ready.
I’m not sure that’s necessarily true. Mateo and Urias were both retained and Frazier added this year with Henderson clearly ready and Westburg and Ortiz in the wings.

People rush to the “second guess” Hyde thread for every minor decision that they completely want to overblow.
In a tough series where small decisions end up mattering, Hyde pressed the right buttons. I wouldn’t have gone to Fuji yesterday. I wouldn’t have taken our Westburg but both moves worked out.
Now, the Mateo play was one of the only few plays where the extra speed mattered but the bottom line is, if he doesn’t do that, you don’t win. It doesn’t matter it was lucky, it just matters that it happened.
In a day and age where everyone wants to always point out anything negative about the manager, I think some rushing to give some kudos would be good to see as well.
Using Cano where he did worked out as well. Brach and KB were wondering if that was a planned move for the top of the lineup.

I would go with most improbable on paper or something like that. Irvin taking down Kirby was definitely a massive coup and fun to watch.
Irvin was great, but let’s not get it twisted, by no means did he take down Kirby. But that’s one of the things that makes baseball so great.
I wanna shout out the home plate ump, he was remarkably consistent all night, only missed a few calls and they seemed to go against the M’s!

FS1 announcers were very casual about that Mateo play.

im calling it...double digit strikeouts for the Birds tonight...we are a heavy strikeout team..and Castillo is a strikeout pitcher..
Looks we’re firmly middle of the pack in strikeouts, 18th in the MLB. Nice change from the last nearly 10 years

The area beyond the outfield being a parking lot is some kind of ugly.
It's a great stadium but you're right, that's ugly.
They do have a $2.5 billion development project for that area coming called the "Diamond District" with a new stadium set to open by 2025.- 1

I didn’t say that. Astros hitters are tested and a little better in my eyes, especially in big games.
You act as if we don’t have the second most comeback wins in the league. Our guys are tested and have been great in big games.

They are a better team, plain and simple. Their top 6 batters give professional big time at bats.
Right, our hitters don’t do that, just a bunch of lucky yahoos.
get a grip, man.

Good points. Add in Bautista not having his change tonight and we got what we got. Again, stop playing SSs in CF, especially one that has choked several times in the 9th inning this year.
I don’t have a problem playing him there early, he’s looked ok out there. But not in the 9th inning with a few better options on the bench!

Baustista faced a good team.
Good point, they’ve been hiding Bautista all season, only letting him pitch against the bad ones.

I was just checking to see if others had noticed that. Unbelievable.
To be fair I’m not 100% sure that’s unique to this scenario. It seems like they do that a lot on the radio feed

No.
That's not how it works.
If you finish near the top you are rewarded with a full year of service time for the current season.
You don't get a two for one deal.
Instead of .7 a season or whatever it was, Adley was given a full season.
It's meant to deter teams from playing service time games.
Yes, thank you, I was being sarcastic.

No, we lose it. Should’ve just kept him down. Imagine we’ll only have 5 years left after this.

I think KB is terrific. Arnold is okay, but a big step down. He’s better than Hollander, Garceau or Newman, however.
I think Hollander is absolutely perfect for the radio. Sure he’s not as good as the recent old timers (Scully, Angel, Miller), but he is just the right amount of homer and is very entertaining. Also he’s just good at going back and explaining a play after it happened, a lot of people just kinda move on.

I think its right to say that the O's lost the off season. They did not bring in as much talent as some others. I think its right to say that the O's lost the deadline. They did not bring in as much talent as some others.
But the O's accumulated so much talent over the last four years of scouting, drafting high, and building a player development organization that they do not have to win the off season or the deadline. Their players are graduating and improving at such a rate that all Elias needs to do is acquire a few players to fill in the gaps.
I don’t think it’s fair to say the O’s “lost” the trade deadline, when they didn’t go out and make the team worse. Also, while Texas is busy, it isn’t clear they are going to be better moving forward.
The only way to “lose” the deadline is go out and clearly overpay for marginal upgrades a la the Gerardo Parra trade.

If he’s still pitching, as I said a month or 2 ago, it’s Grayson. But he may not be pitching then.
I believe Elias said they couldn’t shut any of the pitchers down during a pennant chase, assuming that comment extends to Grayson.

Sure but the post you replied to wasn’t even advocating for a QO. Was simply he is more valuable to the team than he would be via trade value.
