Santander was the O's best offensive player this year, and he's controllable for some time. It's not like the O's have some great offense -- or some great defense. Trading him makes little sense unless the O's think he's an injury risk going forward or because the player(s) coming back is someone they obviously couldn't refuse -- a steal of some kind.

Thanks. I'm curious about this Kevin Smith kid the O's got from the Mets. MLB.com has him ranked at the 12th best prospect in the O's system, just behind Kremer and Lowther, with an ETA of this year. Could be the O's think he's not quite ready to start, however.

Curious if any one knows -- why was Zimmerman promoted ahead of Michael Baumann, Zac Lowther or the new pickup from the Mets, Kevin Smith? Are any of the other guys hurt? Or did Zimmerman just completely outperform them in training?

Not that worried about the outfield because of injuries and because so many guys are so young. Most likely some of the hot guys will regress and some the struggling guys will suddenly improve. It's such a weird year and such a small sample size. 1B/DH will be the real logjam if Mancini comes back healthy (which is hardly a given) and whenever Rutschman gets promoted. If Mancini is ready he's probably more likely to DH or play first than the outfield. Anything is possible with him, but it's hard to imagine him playing the outfield any time soon. Do Severino and Sisco just become bench players when Adley is ready? They both can hit and should see a good amount of time at DH if not 1B as well if Adley is ready next season. I'd hate to see either get traded, but if Rutstchman is tearing it up soon it's hard to see the O's keeping all three. Rutschman may need more time though.

The paper designed a communications network of telegraph, steamboat, railroad and pony express to New Orleans in the 1850s just to report on the Mexican War. This put the paper on the national stage. The paper once had news bureaus in 7 international capitals, including Moscow and Tokyo. David Simon, Louis Rukeyser, HL Mencken, Gwen Ifill and Jim McKay all once worked for the Sun. I mostly read the Washington Post as a kid and teen, but if I could you could be damn sure that I would read the Orioles' box score for yesterday's game in the Sun! I live on the west coast now but don't even read the LA Times much anymore. Now most of the great old newspapers are a mere shadow of what they used to be. The fifth season of The Wire did a great job showing the Sun struggling with the modern era.

Ok, but by "greatest closer in history" I assume he's referring to Mariano Rivera. I don't remember the details of the '96 game other than the Yankee fan reaching out to catch the ball. Did the Yankees rough up Mussina in that game? Thanks

I have to admit I barely followed baseball in the 90s. Even before the strike my attention faded. Something about the Yankees losing to the D-Backs in 2001 brought my attention back. I'm biased in favor of the '83 team because I was still a kid then and I was at one of the World Series games (can't remember which one).

The Baltimore Sun used to be one of the greatest newspapers in the US, far greater than the Washington Post up until the 70s when the Post stole the spotlight on Watergate. The Post is no more liberal than it ever has been -- it is the paper that exposed Nixon yet (along with every other paper except the Knight Ridder reporters and foreign press) failed to properly investigate the run-up to the Iraq War.

I like that Mussina was snubbed in favor of CC. If you're going to ditch the Orioles for the Yankees you better win the big one, and he never did.

Why DH? Davis is decent with the glove but can't hit. I would think the O's cut him before using him as a DH.

If the Orioles had a pitching staff to match their current offense this team maybe could be a bit better than .500 -- best case. But without studying the numbers it does seem the offense has improved quite a bit over the past couple of months -- despite the presence of Davis and Martin.

No problem. I don't mind being singled out. But I don't believe Angelos had anything to do with the construction of Camden Yards. And it's really Camden Yards that ensures there will be Major League Baseball in Baltimore -- not the Angelos family. The city of Baltimore and fans of the Orioles don't owe the Angelos family anything. In fact, I think any reasonable person understands the terrible state of the Orioles begins and ends with Angelos' mismanagement. It has nothing to do with the city of Baltimore -- quite the opposite.

The Angelos family moving the O's to Nashville might just be what the city of Baltimore needs. As others have said the Rays would then just move to Baltimore. It's not like the Angeloses can take Camden Yards with them. I dare the Angelos family to move to Nashville. Why fail in a real sports city when you can fail in a fake one? Is John Angelos a wannabe country singer like his dad is a wannabe owner?

I don't get this attitude toward the Ravens. I haven't even lived on the east coast since the Ravens moved to Baltimore, yet the for me the Ravens moving there were the most exciting thing to happen to Baltimore since the O's won the '83 World Series. It was a huge shame when the Colts left, but so often they were nearly as bad as the Orioles are now. With a team like the Ravens in Baltimore for so long now I find it mystifying anyone misses the Colts. I love it when the Colts lose now -- hated the Peyton Manning teams.

O's, Ravens, Terps and Caps I graduated from UMD, but I was a big Terps fan before I ever thought I would go to school there. Was an almost equally big Hoyas fan as a kid, but I have a hard time caring much about college sports anymore. I used to go to Baltimore Colts games as a kid, then I was a big Redskins fan until the Ravens came to town. Now I don't care about the Skins -- kind of enjoy them losing in the Dan Snyder era actually. Try to root for the Nats sometimes, but since I've lived in LA a long time I'm also kind of a Dodgers and now a Rams fan too. A bit of an LA Kings fan too.

Somebody on mlbtraderumors wrote that Hyde was never in any danger because if Davis has swung at him he would have missed. Another guy wrote that most umpires punch Davis out at least once or twice a night. Wish I could take credit for these but I can't. ?

Why, because the Yankees have been anything but dominant in the postseason for the past decade? Because the Yankees haven't been to the World Series in 10 years? The Yankees are very close to being a house of cards. Take away a brilliant season from DJ LeMahieu and some brilliant starts from some small sample sized youngsters like Urshela and German, and you have a team that gets by mostly on beating up on very weak Orioles and Blue Jays teams, a not quite arrived Rays team and a head case, off-year Red Sox team.

Since 2001? This Twins team is clearly different than any other recent Twins teams.

The Twins have hit more home runs than the Yankees this year, and they have a better team ERA.

True, but I'm guessing most people don't think the Yanks can get past the Astros even if they do get past anyone else.
