  1. Just bought it on kindle and hope to read it at some point, but not sure when I’ll have the time. I’m mid 30s and have two kids one of whom is 4 months so I don’t have a ton of down time but looking forward to it. I was 11 in 97 but went to a few playoff games with my dad. love this photo as I just got one with Bordick at the Bowie game Sunday .
  2. It's only a decrease in 24 games against the division and 32% of the schedule vs currently it being 47%. I love it as it gets boring to play so many games against the same opponents and it'll be cool to be able to play every NL team each year. Every one in the division is playing the exact same schedule +/- a game per non AL-East opponent and +/- a game or so against one NL opponent. The only downside is it eliminates the ability to do a trip and see multiple NL opponents. For example back in 2013-2015 one of those years my parents went with my aunt/uncle on a trip to CA/AZ and saw the Padres, Giants, and Diamondbacks as the O's had a long west coast trip. Though I'm not sure how often the scheduling folks are that kind anyway.
  3. Took my 4.5 year old daughter to her first pro baseball game today at Bowie, didn’t stay past the the third inning which is good because they got clobbered. However I was very impressed with Cowser. Had a great eye to draw a walk on four pitches to lead off, a laser of a single and stole a base. He looks to be the real deal and am excited to hopefully see him in Baltimore in mid-late 2023.
  4. It’s a crappy change in the new CBA. I get it theoretically prevents games with service time manipulation but in this case there was none this year and he’s performed very well, why should they be penalized? why should top 2 get the service time but not third finisher? Why do only top two get pick not #3? IMO the way it should have worked was if you spend more than 30 or 45 days in majors no matter when it occurs during the first year you get a year of service time. So September callups retain eligibility for ROY and don’t count towards service time, even having a week or two during the year doesn’t matter. If the owners balked at this just change it to 7 years to FA with four arb years where year one counts no matter what. currently a guy comes up OD or in April and he gets full year so only six years til FA, but anyone brought up post April or whatnot has 6.75 years to FA with the exception of the lucky two top finishers. So part of 7 seasons is pretty much what everyone gets anyway. He certainly deserves the accolades based on his performance just seems bogus to not get a pick when he was hurt to start the year. I wonder and hope this pushes them to start contract extension talks to lock him up through 2030.
  5. I was wondering about Young and Showalter mostly but also the other guys.
  6. Can we expect to see the rest of the draft class this year? If so when?
  7. don’t forget Schoop and Brach were also offloaded and these guys are all they have to show for it. I made a post a week or so ago about quantity over quality producing pretty poor results for the O’s since 2000. Wish they had tried to get one or two guys in some of those deals instead of 3-5.
  8. Was he DFAd? Did the Os try to get him off 40 man roster thus needed to pass through waivers? not a huge loss, just curious how they scooped him up
  9. Was just thinking ugh I hope we don’t need to deal with Duquette and Toronto all over again. I knew he grew up in the area Alexandria VA and I believe he grew up as an O’s fan, can anyone attest to that? If so that’d seem to be a leg up on keeping him here so long as he was paid well and any significant competitor offer was met. I can’t see anything else being more appealing if he was an O’s fan growing up, the big city nature of going to a NY or LA team just doesn’t seem like it’s his cup of tea. I can’t get over the fact that he’s only 39.
  10. How are season tickets or mini season packages handled? I loved getting my book of bound tickets when I got 13 game packages from 2013-2018 and loved it as a kid when my dad got full season packages and I’d help him divvy it up for his 10 other plan co holders.
  11. When should Elias start extension talks? After one year or two years of service time? Seems like this is imperative to do with him and something they really botched with Manny, probably due to his knees.
  12. We need to start a petition to bring back Gary Thorne!
  13. even though Orioles Hangout is the longest running known website (founded in 1996) to cover a major professional team in any sport in the United States @Tony-OH WOW I was only 11 in 96 and while I’d attend games with my dad I had no idea about OH until mid 2000s . That fact is amazing! Congrats! Also when is the 105.7 segment you referred to?
  14. It was super fun going through baseball reference and seeing all the trades made over the years!
  15. Not a terrible trade at first appearance, hopefully one of these guys becomes a #3/4 starter in which case this trade is an easy win. I just would have preferred quality over quantity. I certainly don't have the eye to judge these players but in looking at the Twins top prospects list, would have rather had 2-3 total players headlined by a guy like Steve Hajjar, Matt Canterino, or Marco Raya. I suppose they weren't offering that but seems like so many of the O's trades since the Syd Thrift demolition in 2000 have been a great player for 4-5 guys and with biggest exception the Bedard trade (Jones and Tillman, not to mention a useful Sherrill) and Mike Bordick trade (Melvin Mora), most of the others have failed to produce anyone of significant value. This exercise was quite fun! Mike Bordick to the Mets. Received Pat Gorman, Leslie Brea, Mike Kinkade and Melvin Mora. (1 of 4) Harold Baines and Charles Johnson to the Chicago White Sox. Received Miguel Felix (minors), Juan Figueroa (minors), Jason Lakman (minors) and Brook Fordyce. (0 of 4) B.J. Surhoff and Gabe Molina to the Atlanta Braves. Received Trent Hubbard, Fernando Lunar and Luis Rivera. (0 of 3) Sidney Ponson to the San Francisco Giants. Received Ryan Hannaman (minors), Kurt Ainsworth and Damian Moss. (0 of 3) Miguel Tejada to the Houston Astros. Received Matt Albers, Mike Costanzo, Troy Patton, Dennis Sarfate and Luke Scott. (1.5 of 5 - Patton as .5 and Scott as 1) Erik Bedard to the Seattle Mariners. Received Tony Butler (minors), Adam Jones, Kam Mickolio, George Sherrill and Chris Tillman. (2.5 of 5) Ramon Hernandez and cash to the Cincinnati Reds. Received Brandon Waring (minors), Ryan Freel and Justin Turner. (0 of 3 - of note Turner became good after us) Manny Machado to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Received Yusniel Diaz (minors), Rylan Bannon, Dean Kremer, Zach Pop and Breyvic Valera. (Jury is still out here...maybe .5 of 5 for Kremer) Zack Britton to the New York Yankees. Received Cody Carroll, Josh Rogers and Dillon Tate. (1 of 3) Kevin Gausman and Darren O'Day to the Atlanta Braves. Received Brett Cumberland (minors), JC Encarnación (minors), Evan Phillips, Bruce Zimmermann and international bonus slot money. (0 of 4 right now with maybe Zimm as a possible hit) Jonathan Schoop to the Milwaukee Brewers. Received Jean Carmona (minors), Luis Ortiz and Jonathan Villar. (1 of 3 for Villar) Dylan Bundy to the Los Angeles Angels. Received Kyle Brnovich (minors), Zach Peek (minors), Kyle Bradish and Isaac Mattson. (.5 of 4 at the moment for Bradish) So in 22 years all of the trades of 1 or 2 O's in exchange for 3 or more players, I'd say 8 of 46 players received have been a success for the O's and 4 of 8 of those have come in two trades by MacPhail. I wonder how many of those were by design to get quantity or could we have had 1 higher rated player which may have hit.
  16. One big difference is Creed was out of high school and Young played D1 baseball at an elite school in an elite conference and had success his first two seasons.
  17. No idea what's going on with him he tweeted about the draft pick, but he's been the least talked about guy drafted.
  18. Is it safe to say James Hicks is not going to be an Oriole?
  19. Hope you're right and he signs...while a replacement third next year is all fine and dandy, if we're aiming to be competitive starting 2023 and with a prime window through say 2026-7, much rather have him this year.
  20. For sure, I totally expected they negotiated something overnight before selecting him, so that was certainly surprising.
  21. Make that a choice between McLean and Young + extra 2023 3rd round pick. Can totally see why they'd go with the latter there.
  22. Yes. So IMO not a huge concern about not being able to sign him if his demands are too high. I bet the team figured blowing $2M on McLean vs $1.3M on Young with a 3rd rounder next year it was better to go with the latter.
  23. I'm very excited about this, and am holding out hope on McLean but worst case scenario they get another 3rd round pick next year. I saw somewhere Young's defense was very good. Like the guts and risk/reward here at this late in the draft. Signing him isn't hurting anything else unless Mclean wanted $2M.
