  1. Given how precariously thin the O's starting rotation is - especially with Bradish getting blasted recently - I actually think Vallimont should and will get a look for a spot start soon with the major league team.

I mentioned this in another thread, but Vallimont is already 25, stretched out, and pitching lights out at the moment (I know, small sample size, but might as well see if we can catch lighting in a bottle). He's also on the 40-man roster.

Voth will get another shot because he delivered 8 scoreless outs in today's game, but I like Vallimont's repertoire, raw stuff, and upside more than Voth's. And Voth has been pretty bad over a long stretch in the majors. Hopefully the O's analytics and pitching coaching staffs have figured out some tweaks that have helped both pitchers, but I like Vallimont more both short-term and long-term.

Off to a good start despite some ugly numbers before coming to the O's.

    8 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 3 BB, 8 K

    5 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 10K

Small sample but enough to raise an eyebrow.

I actually think the O's are going to need him to make a start soon, maybe even the next time we need a starter.

Vallimont is already 25, he's stretched out, and he's hot. He was a pretty highly ranked prospect for the Twins, and he's basically potential found money for us. Better option that Voth in my opinion, even though Voth miraculously gave us a few scoreless innings today.

Would be a hell of a waiver claim if we can get some decent innings with a high K rate out of Vallimont this season.

  3. Outside of the starting rotation, this team is legitimately good. It sucks that GrayRod went down. I like this offense better than any of the low OBP offenses of the 2012-2016 O's playoff teams, and that's before Stowers, Vavra, and perhaps Westburg join the major league roster.

If DL Hall can give us 3 good innings every 5 or so days starting in a week or two, and if we can somehow hold on until the end of next month, Elias is going to have to be a buyer for starting pitching at the trade deadline.

I think they like guys to have "positional versatility" and he doesn't have the arm for the LF of the infield, but he has some speed. He's probably a super utility, but a guy who starts 4+ times a week, not a McKenna who might start once, but come in often as a defensive replacement (I agree you probably don't need both on the roster though). I would expect Vavra to come up when they decide what they are going to do with Odor though

I'd love to trade Odor for a bag of balls at the trade deadline, then bring up Prieto to replace Odor at 2B and Vavra to replace McKenna on the bench. If Prieto keeps hitting at AA, I don't see any issue with him skipping AAA given his age and pro experience in Cuba.

Lowther's DFA is understandable, but do we really need another infielder who can't hit?

I think it's more of a "break glass in case of emergency" move with Urias going on the IL recently. If Mateo or Martin get hurt anytime soon, Arauz would probably wind up getting some starts for the O's.

Unless you viewed his upside as Mountcastle at the end of last season there is no reason for that to be the case now. The kid is 20. Calm down.

Seriously. Mayo is having a perfectly fine season. The power is very legit. He's 20 and tied for 2nd for the minor league organizational home run lead! He only trails a guy who's already in the majors and 4 years older by only one home run.

Yeah I wasn't clear, I'm referring to the scores of players who debuted at 18/19 and were far better at that age of 18/19 than Rutschman is at 24.5, such as Harper, Trout, Acuna, Ramirez, Soto, Guerrero Jr etc

Oh, really? Rutschman isn't as good as the very best players in the game? What's your point?

He’s improving but the power is non-existent so far. The hit tool will have to be elite for him to have a ML impact. Probably why the Orioles were messing with his swing.

It might be just me, but if you're messing with the swing of your first round draft pick because his hit tool needs more power to provide value, you probably shouldn't have drafted him in the first round.

The key thing here is just because John Angelos may want to move the team, he needs MLB approval. I doubt MLB is going to take a team with a stadium like Camden Yards and let it move.

Now saying that, Nashville is an up and coming city while Baltimore is currently a crime infested violent city with no clear light at the end of it's tunnel of mismanagement and corruption.

If I took my fandom out of it, the God's honest truth is Nashville is probably a better location for the team. They would certainly build a state of the art new stadium probably somewhere close the football stadium just across from the amazing Nashville strip.

While it stinks to think of the Orioles in any other city, if it happened, it would kind of be understandable considering the lack of attendance and state of the city (which along with the poor records by the team is a major part of the attendance issues).

Tony - you know full well that MLB would also never approve the Orioles leaving the city using crime/corruption as a reason because of politics.

Nashville will either get an expansion team or the Rays (with A's going to Vegas if they move). MLB has no baseball-related justification to move the team given the team's history and stadium, and politics/optics will be another reason the team stays.

    That's a bit strong.

There isn't normally a huge gulf between say #70 and #20.  Not with the bust rates of even highly touted prospects.

Let's revisit this discussion after the draft and after all the Top 100 lists are updated, shall we? If Jarren Duran can jump up to the Top 30 prospects for MLB Pipeline after a hot 3 months in the minors in 2021, then Gunnar has a good shot at the Top 10. He's doing things that very few prospects his age ever accomplish. The fact he has still yet to face a pitcher younger than him and he's a 20 year old in AAA is mind-boggling. Both the sharp analysts and dummies that put together the consensus prospect lists at the various publications WILL give Gunnar the respect he deserves later on this summer, barring a season-ending injury. Watch.

BA just updated their rankings and put him 37th, I think.   Eric Longenhagen was asked about Henderson in a Fangraphs chat a few weeks ago and stuck with his no. 68 ranking.  I’m not saying these guys are right, but there’s two prominent sources that haven’t moved him into the top tier when given the opportunity.

Could be wrong, but pretty sure both update again later this summer. Pretty sure they all do after the draft, otherwise they look like an amateur ranking source.

    Longenhagen already looks foolish.

There are no sure things in baseball.  Despite Henderson’s great two months, I still haven’t seen a national source that ranks him as a top 20 prospect.

His rise has been meteoric. But I guarantee you he will start skyrocketing up every list, most of which aren't updated until later this summer. All the prospect analysts will have no choice but to rank someone who destroyed AA at 20 years old and NEVER faced a pitcher younger than him in their Top 25, otherwise they risk looking foolish.

  13. Really just Mancini and Santander for starting pitching, even though starting pitching is always in demand at the deadline. Maybe Tate for a prospect pitcher? But that wouldn't be buying.

If we're in contention and buying at the deadline, that means we need to keep Jordan Lyles. With GrayRod out for a while, we can't depend on Grayson for this season. Our starting pitching is already extremely thin as is.

I just remember being p@#sed when I saw Cowser was the O's pick.  It made no sense to me to take a corner OF who was rated about the 15th best player.  Elite SS talent was available and a big area of need in the system.  I refuse to believe that anyone, including the O's thought Cowser was the BPA.

I was also pissed, and I felt the same way you did at the time, and still do. We could have also drafted Khalil Watson or Matt McLain! To me it's just not worth saving a few hundred thousand, or even up to $1 million, to pass on elite talent. I think Elias was too enamored with saving money for later picks, gambled that Fabian would be available for the O's 2nd pick and lost, and overrated Cowser. I believe Cowser can still pan out and be a Nick Markakis kind of hitter for us, but I've always thought it was a mistake to draft him, and I doubt anything will change my mind on that. I disagree with the thought process that we can logically conclude factored into the selection.

And despite that, I'm super high on Elias as an evaluator and how he and his staff draft. Much higher than Tony seems to be. But that doesn't mean that Elias is perfect. To me, Cowser and Kjerstad were mistakes because better players could have been picked instead, and we could have still wound up with players like Mayo, Baumler, and Rhodes.

  15. I think I mentioned it already it another thread, but I'm coming around to the idea of taking Jackson Holliday #1 and saving a bit of cash for the other picks. I really disliked the Kjerstad and Cowser picks to go under slot because there were superior players available that may have also signed a bit under slot. But I do think an advanced lefty HS bat at a premium infield position is indeed more valuable to the O's because of the new park dimensions.

I was at the game today. Wasn't particularly impressed with his stuff. FB was 89-91. Randy Wolf might be a ceiling comp.

If he turns out to be just a decent multi-inning bullpen piece for the major league team, that would be a win.

Another awful outing. Again, not a nugget it seems.

5 scoreless innings with 4 K's in his most recent start yesterday. Came here to post this just for Mr. "Not A Nugget". I despise Buck Showalter, btw. Such an overrated manager.

I guess the question is, if he pitches well but can only go 4-5 innings his first few starts, is it a big deal?  Probably not.  I was thinking they could have Grayrod go with the idea of Hall or Kremer acting as his piggyback.

Man, it would be nuts to see Hall piggyback a GrayRod start. Would love to see it!

Jordan Lawlar is killing it at A ball.

He WAS killing it. Lawlar went on the DL with a back injury - back injuries are usually tricky and can be longer-term.
