  1. Definitely the wife. Where is mom? I keep seeing the talk of dad. I know the dad was a major leaguer but it's weird to me.
  2. Nailed it. I can't believe I haven't seen anyone write an article about this or talk about it on Masn. The fact that there are 4-5 studs at AAA Is great for the Orioles but not great for chemistry if you are a veteran who was on awful teams and then won 101 games last year and now may lose your job. I'm very worried about the psychological impact all of these AAA guys are having on the club and don't know what the answer is. On the one hand, it's great to have talent in the pipeline as they are cheap. But on the other hand, it's not like we know they are way better than the guys we have now. I mean Hays started in the all-star game last year. To constantly know you could be replaced has to have a huge psychological impact. I'm wondering if Elias thinks he can trade some of the veterans. I don't think he'll get much as other teams know we want to unload them. I guess at the deadline people always know that but it if he wants to make any moves now, I think there would be fewer buyers than at the deadline.

    Kevin Brown

Kevin is great, but I too miss Gary. He and Jim were amazing together. Why was he let go? Was it simply money? Or did he piss of the owner?
  4. What was wrong with Frazier? We got 2 wins above replacement for 8 million. It's like going out to eat, expecting a decent meal and getting it.
  5. I totally disagree. I think it would MISMANAGEMENT If we sent the best 26 players North. I'D MUCH RATHER have Holliday for an extra year in 6 years when he's in his physical prime than to have him for 16 days this year. One position player makes very little difference.
  6. I guess you don't realize that Urias has a higher OPS at home (.717) than away (.691). https://www.mlb.com/player/ramon-urias-602104?stats=splits-r-hitting-mlb&year=2023
  7. n years past, I messed with a VPN and got mlb.tv but that's complicated, annoying and I didn't get pre-game or post-game shows. This year, I did DirecTV streaming. It's amazing. I highly recommend it. It's like $90 or $100 a month but you can cancel when the season is over (I switch to youtube tv when the eason is over as it's a little cheaper but it doesn't have MASN). Plus you get basically all the cable channels as well (You need their chocie package or higher to get MASN). But you just stream it on your tv or ipad. YOu aren't paying for a box and there is UNLIMITED DVR. You can tell it to record all orioles games, all pre-game shows, all post-game shows. Hell I think you can tell it to record all MLB games that are on any channel and it will do it. And you can watch it from your phone. So I can go to the park with my 5-year old and watch the game. You can watch it at work. You can watch it on vacaton, etc. It's basically a cable package but you stream it.
  8. It drives me nuts when people rip managers/players after a tough loss. When two of your 3 starting pichers in a 3 game series get bounced before the third inning, it doesn't matter if Jesus Christ is your manager - you aren't winning the series. That being said, let me criticize Hyde. Look, I don't get why we put Hicks in for O'Hearn in the 8th. Chapman was HORRIFIC. We wanted him to stay in. There is no way Boche would do it so call his bluff. And if he keeps Chapman in, then I'll take my chances that Ohearn won't swing at the 4 straight balls. Why in the world did we do that? Why are we trying to get them to pull Chapman? We should have been BEGGING them to keep them in. No way that would have happened - they would have put LeClerc in and Ohearn would have gotten to face him. But once we got outmanaged, I wanted to see Kjerstad for the Grand Slam possibility. I wish he'd gotten an at bat.
  9. We can't afford it. We have a 5 year window. You do realize Texas has a $250 million payroll, right? Ours is like 72. I DO NOT want them signing any aging stars. The fans were happy when we signed Chris Davis, I wasn't. Now I'd sign several of these super young guys through their year 30 season.
  10. Look, I don't get why we put Hicks in for O'Hearn to start with. No way that would have happened - we'd have gotten O'Hearn against their closer. But once we got outmanaged, I agree with you there. Put in Kjerstad for the Grand Slam. I hope we give him an at bat in the 9th.
  11. How was he as a commentator? I saw he did it from like 79 to 92 which meant he stopped doing that when he was only 55. Anyone have memories of him as a commentator? Why did he retire from that job so young or did they force him out? I always liked him when he'd show up as a guest in the booth but I didn't become an Os fan until 2012 so I have no idea what he was as an actual commentator. Also, does anyone know what his total salary earned was for the Orioles? It's unfair how little he made compared to the guys nowadays.
  12. As someone said, Brach says some interesting things but he doesn't have the cadence or voice of a broadcaster. And what I don't like about seeing Brach on there is it just reminds me of why he's on there. Isn't his wife friends with Angelos wife? Wasn't there some story of Angelos wife taking a selfie of Brach mid-broadcast last week. JA's wife works in Nashville and is presumably friends with Brach's wife who is a country singer in Nashville, right?
  13. And remember when people were upset we traded him last year? I thought it was great we traded him. He got to win a WS and we got a prospect. Baseball salaries are crazy. Mancini made $16 million total in his career up until this year and was pretty productive. Now he's not and he'll make $14 million this year and next.
  14. Do you not see the irony in you asking for Erod? Andy Miller was fun but it would have been way better to have done nothing that year and kept Erod in the rotation for the next 5 years.
  15. Please. The average fan isn't on orioles hangout. Personally, I hate the trade deadline. Just as I like my family, I like my orioles and don't want to see 3-4 of them sent into oblivion. Here's the question I have for everyone. Can someone tell me the last 10 years, how often has the world series winner had a key member acquired by trade that was instrumental in them winning it? List the last 10 world series winners and show me what they did at the deadline and how critical it was. I have no idea what the stats are but my gut is it's way overrated. Andy Miller was good but we would have been a lot better off as a franchise if we had EROD in the rotation for the next 5 years. If we pass, it may not be because of cheapness. It may be because we are being smart. The mets aren't cheap and they suck. We weren't cheap when we signed chris davis and he sucked.
  16. Is that a joke? Cano is having one of the more unexpected GREAT baseball seasons IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME and you act like him coming up short is a regular thing? The thing I hate about being an Orioles fan is coming on here and seeing the fans just trash the players. THe other day it was, "Let's trade Austin Hays." Imagine if someone was that ruthless with your job. You've been a great employee for 5 years when the company was struggling, but now the company is rocking it and decides they are going to ship you out of town. I get it. Sports is different than than the real world but I'd much rather just be in the playoff hunt every year with guys I know and recognize than changing 25% of the roster for an all-in at the trade deadline.
  17. Why are you believing those numbers? No other site is close to that. Fangragphas has us at 5.1% to make the playoffs (up from 2.1% when Mancini was traded) and 0.0% to win the WS. They have Boston who is way behind us at 28.8%. https://www.fangraphs.com/standings/playoff-odds 538 has us at 14% to make the playoffs. https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2022-mlb-predictions/ The betting markets have us at +650 which is also like 13%.
  18. From FanGarphs: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/orioles-prioritize-head-over-heart-trade-trey-mancini-to-astros/ Totally worth it if you think about it like this. . If we use Kyle Stowers as his replacement, that costs the O’s, on average, a third of a win relative to Mancini, per ZiPS. That reduces the team’s projected playoff probability by about 0.7 percentage points, to 4.8%. By ZiPS’ reckoning, the Mancini/Stowers swap only has approximately a 1-in-140 chance of changing the team’s playoff status one way or the other at season’s end. But what if the Orioles are even better than ZiPS thinks? ZiPS projected their roster strength as .455 before the trade, but what happens if I instead tell it that this is actually a .500 team? The trade still only changes the eventual playoff outcome once in 45 opportunities.
  19. I am not sure if I've posted on here in 4 years. Not entirely because the Os have stunk (mainly my wife and I had our first kid). Anyways, the last time I was on here regularly. I remember half the board was irate that we didn't blow up the team at the trade deadline in 2017. I did NOT want to throw in the towel. At the time, we were only 6.5 games out of first and had a 4.3% chance of making the playoffs. Given that I knew the bottom was going to fall out soon, I was all for trying to make it on fumes then or in 2018 as I knew some horrific times were coming. Now are playoff odds are almost half that - 2.4% - which has more teams in it and some are made we aren't trying to add players? The future looks good in a year or two. We need to keep building for that not hoping for a 1/50 shot to get eliminated when the playoffs start. This is a trade that had to be made. I'm stunned by what we got. We seemingly got nothing for Manny in hindsight. Even when we have a legitimate play off team, this honestly is the type of trade we probably should still make if the small-market Orioles want to be competitive on a regular basis. Personally, I think selling the future for a slightly better team now is almost never a good idea. I know I'm in the minority, but I'd rather have had EROD in the starting rotation for for 5 years than Andy miller for 5 weeks, particularly since we didn't win it all.
  20. What? I believe we are an organization that MUST try to outsmart the others as we clearly can't outspend them. Baltimore isn't a rich city. It's not a super large city. How in the world are we going to beat the Yankess/Red Sox if we don't outsmart them?
  21. I haven't been on these boards at all in months as child rearing is quite time consuming and killing my Orioles habit - that and all of the losses. Anyways, trading down is smart (which is what we basiHere ally have been doing). Here are the slot values of the top 10 picks. Last year, our #2 was supposed to get $7.8 million and he took $5.2 million. We used that money on other draft picks. 1) Pirates: $8,415,300 2) Rangers: $7,789,900 3) Tigers: $7,221,200 4) Red Sox: $6,664,000 5) Orioles: $6,180,700 6) D-backs: $5,742,900 7) Royals: $5,432,400 ? Rockies: $5,176,900 9) Angels: $4,949,100 10) Mets: $4,739,900 So instead of taking the 2nd best guy in the draft, we took the 8th and then got a couple other talents we woudn't have normally gotten. That's called playing the odds. If the #2 pick has say a 50% chance of being great but 3 other picks each are 20%. Guess what. you are better going with 3 versus 1.
  22. I assume he'd know what guys are thinking but virtually every thing I might ever tell himi related to this type o f thing would cover this situation. "Keep it in your ****. Don't be an ass. Be respectful. Take someone out on a date before you make a move on them. Don't cheat on your wife" I'd be irate with him if he tried to have a one night stand on the road while married.
  23. I feel bad that it happened to her but do we know he faked a news tip? She thought it was a news tip but the article says the player told her he had something to tell her. Not that that really makes this acceptable. While it sucsk that something like that happpenedl, the reality is Trey Mancini is in a relationship with a reporter. Relationships do sometimes start in the course of your job. I think in an ideal world, the player would say, "Hey I like you. Do you want to get a drink, grac a coffeet, etc.?? instead of trying to jump on her at a hotel room which is pretty disgraceful. At the same time, if I was a reporter, male or female and someone told me, "Hey I need to tell you something. Come to my hotel room," I'm pretty sure I'd press them on it. "Why can't you just tell me it on the phone. What's it about?" If I have a daughter, I'm going to tell her, "Be forewarned. Guys are often thinking of something sexual." It sucks you have to think that way but it's reality.
  24. Thorne and Palmer together make watching every game of a 100 loss season worth it. He has fun. Yes, some geeks will say he gets names wrong or may be drinking, so what. So do I. LOVED Dempsey as welll.n Such a homer, but so excited. His homerism is the whole reason why I still have MASN versus buying MLB.tv and getting the games through a VPN. I wanted to watch the pre and post-game shows. As an announcer, I didn't love Bordick but feel bad for a man with a ton of kids getting a pink slip. Let's hope he saved some of the $27 million he made during his career. I just read the Sun article. Thorne summed up why I liekd him perfectly. He got along great with Thorne, they told stories and had fun. Them having fun made me have fun. “We became great friends and will remain that way,” Thorne said. “It was great storytelling. We had a tremendous crew that broadcast the games. We genuinely had a good time, worked hard, but enjoyed it, and that’s the kind of stuff I’ll miss. We had a situation where I think we provided a really good broadcast, and it wasn’t accidental. It was because of the people who were working it, and I’ll miss those relationships.”
