  1. 1. How do you view Wieters as an offensive player now?

    • I still feel he will be a franchise, 900ish OPS catcher
    • I felt he would be a franchise player but now I think he will just be an occassional AS
    • I felt he was going to be a franchise player but now he will just be an average player..at best
    • I felt he was going to be average but now I think he will be a superstar

How do you view Wieters now vs when he first came up?(offensively speaking only)

Said this to a co-worker about a year ago. Wieters is going to be a great player, but his ceiling is going to slowly progress. He could break out with the bat this year (at least be a .800 OPS hitter), but I think the best you'll see in Wieters comes 2-3 years from now and he'll be consistently productive.

I find the average player choice amusing, since despite falling short of pretty much all offensive predictions last season, he was still an above average catcher.

I voted for that, because fairly or not I don't view him just in comparison to other catchers. He was hyped to be a superstar, at any position, like Joe Mauer. He didn't even have an OPS over .700 last year so I remain skeptic. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I view Wieters as a developing player who needs more rest to reach his potential.

This would have a tiny bit of validity if he started off great and faded down the stretch but that's not what has happened..In fact, his best month in his career was September of his rookie year.

I have no clue what this has to do with anything. Do You?

I view him as an enigma soon to be clarified.

Since that wasn't an option, I voted the most optimistic view, though he doesn't need to put up a .900 OPS to be a franchise player.

Yea, this is how I feel. I think we've narrowed down his likely career path to the point where we can be pretty sure he's not going to be the Best Catcher Ever, but also excluding anything below an average starting catcher.

If he continues to be a very good defensive catcher and stays relatively healthy he could be a multi-year All Star with an .800 OPS.

If I had to guess I'd say he ends up somewhere in the Varitek, Freehan, Darrell Porter range. And remember, the scale for catchers is much different from the rest of baseball - Freehan and Porter, while not HOFers, are among the top 20 catchers of all time in terms of WAR.

I fully expect Wieters to be the best catcher the O's have every had when it is all said and done. IMO, he is already well on his way to being the best defensive catcher we have had and once his offense comes together, mid

.800 ops annually, he will be far and away the best we have ever had in Baltimore.

Rick Dempsey and Chris Hoiles are currently vying for that title. One couldn't hit, the other couldn't field, and neither got much over 20 WAR. The O's have been historically weak at catcher, so Wieters has an excellent chance.

    • I think you'd see a much stronger correlation to how they were rated in the minors vs. draft position. Westburg has been treated similarly to Cowser and Kjerstad. Adley, Gunnar and Holliday were all consensus #1 prospects and have been given pretty much immediate every day player status.
    • Game ball or the equivalent of hockey star(s) of the game for me: Suarez — all of those zero’s on the road, gets my game ball. Kimbrel is my runner-up. I know striking out Trout with the bases loaded is the job, but it ain’t easy. Cowser - Honorable Mention. I’m still not 100 percent in on the Milkman nickname, but he sure is fun to watch.
    • Yeah - I was thinking Beavers could fill that spot, but it seems he is more suited for a corner outfield position, if he makes the bigs at all.
    • We have all this year and next if it’s needed.   No rush.  No hurry.
    • Kjesrtad was Elias's #1 pick in 2020 draft and #2 overall, so Elias saw something great in him.  Can you all imagine how powerful the O's will be if Holliday starts to hit and Kjerstadt hits like he did in the minors, Kjesrtad did good when he was called up in 2023.  They will be the Baltimore Bombers!
    • I'm not crushing Santander either, but he's a career .765 OPS guy. It was .797 last year. His only year over .800 was the Covid year. He plays average defense. Not a butcher, but not exactly rangy out there. Long story short, I think you can get similar power with more OBP from Kjerstad and Cowser with similar defense for Kjerstad and better for Cowser. So yes, I'd say they'll be better than Santander.
    • Can we get Buster Olney, talking heads, and various posters to look in the mirror for their ridiculing Elias' "hoarding" prospects? The strategy has always been about raising the competitive floor/ceiling while managing risk like a portfolio manager.  Seeking alpha while managing beta is the goal.  Sig's purpose is the quantify. And yet we still have people tossing out trade proposals and extensions and unhealthy FA pursuits because they know better and moving prospects to other positions.  It's fun to speculate but it's foolish to present it as an absolute.
