Moneyball: A Major Motion Picture

Was anybody else aware of this? I can't wait personally, and apparently it's big enough to have Brad Pitt playing Billy Beane.

I'm hoping it turns out to be the "Jerry Maguire" of baseball.

It's been in pre-production for a while now.

I still can't imagine a scenario in which this is a good movie.

Aaron Sorkin apparently re-wrote the script after Sony shelved the movie in 2009. I can't decide whether that means it will be better or just more traditional (in terms of plot, pacing and techniques).

Whoever was scheduled to play Paul DePodesta was apparently replaced with JONAH HILL of all people, which is pretty much the last nail in the coffin for me.

I'll go see it, but I'm expecting a small disaster. I just can't see this book transitioning to film, particularly with a star-powered cast.

It's pretty interesting that Royce Clayton will be playing our beloved Miguel Tejada on the big screen, who knew he could act? Also I'm interested to see how a guy named Corey Vanderhook is going to pull off the role of Ramon Hernandez.

The cast includes Robin Wright and Philip Seymour Hoffman. That would usually be enought to excite me; but while I enjoyed the book, I do not see it translating into a major motion picture. Aaron Sorkin is a good choice. While I did enjoy his "The Social Network", it felt like a made-for-TV movie to me.

I liked the Social Network and I'll probably give this a see. I've never actually read Moneyball. Jonah Hill does seem like an odd choice though for that kind of role. Pitt and Hoffman are both talented though. I've long admired the latter's versatility as an actor.

DePodesta doesn't want to be portrayed in the movie.

But Jonah Hill will be portraying "Peter Brand."

We discussed the movie a little in this thread too.

So now a generation who won't read the book but will see the movie is going to think some guy named Peter Brand was the bookish driving force behind the FO?

Sounds like an amazingly boring movie.

Well, to be fair a movie about a bunch of computer nerds creating a website sounds boring. Get a good book about the backstory, give it to Aaron Sorkin to write and have David Fincher direct and you get The Social Network.

My biggest hope is that they don't just cover the Oakland part of things, but also show Beane's backstory, probably the most interesting part of the book.

My favorite part of the book is when Chad Bradford wrote a paper in elementary school about how he wanted to play "shote-stop" for the Baltimore Orioles.

    • By the way, Catch Probability does take direction into account, and estimates that the folder loses 1 ft./sec when going back on a ball.   https://www.mlb.com/news/catch-probability-updated-to-include-direction-c232532408 Answering a question I’ve had for a while, they also now adjust for catches made at or near the wall.  https://www.mlb.com/news/catch-probability-updated-to-account-for-walls-c269814542
    • Yes like the strong opinions about Frazier have not been shared previously lol.  Urias won the Gold Glove last year ..likely not be winning it this year. And he has made more errors than one this season but none in such a critical moment.  Not to worry, 2023 will soon enough pass and Adam won’t be the issue in 2024 I suspect.
    • Yup...part of the "negotiations" with the Stadium Authority (or whatever entity is involved) in beefing up the Camden Yards area and letting Angelos profit from it.
    • John Angelos is just like us he puts his clown shoes on one foot at a time.
    • It's one thing going into the season to build out a bullpen of spare parts and finding undervalued talent that can be a weapon pitching in relief. But when making transactions at the trade deadline or a waiver claim in the second half to me that isn't the time to be auditioning players for vital bullpen roles. I would have much preferred trading for an established bullpen arm at the trade deadline over gambling on players like Fuji and Webb. Webb has been pretty good, but Fuji has been Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde when it comes to his relief appearances.
    • I appreciate the research information.  Still, you’ve played enough baseball to know that it’s easier to run and track a ball running sideways and in than it is to catch one running way into the outfield than the infield.   Also, and this was my big gripe, running in you have a shot to make a strong throw home.  Frazier had no shot to make any kind of decent throw with his momentum going the opposite direction.    And forget the .100 xBA, since as you know, xBA only looks at EV and launch angle, and not where the ball was hit on the field.   Your catch probability research is better.  I wish though that Statcast would make this data more available on a play-by-play basis and maybe publish a chart that shows that on average, if the distance is X and the hang time is Y, then the catch probability is Z.   That shouldn’t be hard to do.
