MacPhail on trade possibilities

If anyone heard his interview last night on MASN you heard him discussing the jam in the outfield and that "unfortunately Pie is out of options". He was talking about Reimold and Pie duking it out for the final spot. He then went on to say something like- but you never know who might have needs in their outfield later on in spring training.

I am not usually one to jump on quotes but he sounded pretty interested in finding a suitor for Pie so that he could keep Reimold on the roster. He didn't mention needing that 4th OF to be able to handle CF.

If anyone else heard it or has a transcript of it, that would be great.

I have always thought that Markakis would suffice as a backup CF if it came to keeping a revitalized Reimold or a struggling Pie. Of course if Pie suddenly finds himself and Reimold doesn't (not likely in my opinion) then all bets are off.

EDIT: My apologies for misspelling Macphail. If a mod would change it, it would be appreciated.

Also keep in mind, (and I forget who said it) but yesterday on the radio I heard them say that Reimold played a lot fo center field in the minors. IF that is true, then he could suffice from time to time in center.

I see him being open (always) to entertaining offers. Not "shopping" Pie. Semantics maybe... but AM is already covered by Reimold's option. He's not forced into anything at this point.

I just blogged about this ::ahem, www.oriolepost.com ahem::: But Nolan coming on so strong is obviously getting him a lot of attention.

The problem is two fold:

1) Pie is a viable fourth outfielder for his defensive value alone, and he is out of options.

2) Nolan appears, in the early going anyway, to have found his stroke again making his bat a real asset to the team even if it is coming off the bench.

3) If you trade Pie who becomes your glove-man for the outfield on the bench? Matt Angle? Who else goes?

This could be interesting.

Pie being fairly uninspiring if not invisible so far is not helping his cause.

And I should qualify what I said... Reimold does look like he's back, but it's not a tragedy if he has to go to AAA for a couple months. He's done it before, bucked up (no pun intended...) and forced his way back to the big club.

And I could be totally off base here, if AM has some specific target out there, Pie definitely has some value. :noidea:

If they were considering him as an option in CF then I would expect him to get at least some time there during the games.

I always hear about Pie's "great" defense and yet every time I watch him play, he just look so...so...lets say awkward. He circles around underneath fly balls. He always seems like he's one step from cutting in front of Jones for fly balls. He seems to have trouble picking the ball up. And lets not even get me started about his "baseball acumen." I was REALLY down on Pie when he was first handed the job with no qualifications. I cam around on him and admitted I was wrong when I saw some improvement. But I just cannot sit here and agree that he is a strong defender...I just don't see it.

I think the person was wrong. I can only find ONE game where he ever played CF in the minors. I apologize for bringing it up.

NP, it sure would make things easier if Nolan could play centerfield at a slightly below average level.

A more likely scenario would probably be Kakes in center and Reimold in right, but I'm not sure the team wants to move Kakes around like that, even if its only once a week. :scratchchinhmm:

I don't think Reimold would kill us in CF, giving Adam a day off here and there. If Adam went on the DL, Angle could be here the next night.

Pie is much better in centerfield. He covers ground like no one on the team.

Balls that Jones would wander back on and jump for just to have the ball land ten feet away are ones that Pie is standing waiting under. Its that much better.

But the problem is he will get more time in left than in center. Agreed? And thus far he has not impressed me in left.

As for Jones, saying someone is better than Jones isn't saying a whole lot. WHY doesn he continue to play so shallow? He wa standing about 40 feet behind the second base bag last night. What the heck?
