OFFNY
If I were a major league manager, I'd seriously consider fining people for sliding into first base. I don't understand the point of doing it. I guess if the first baseman is going to catch the ball well in front of the bag and physically tag you instead of walking it to the bag, that might be a scenario where you'd do it. Nine times out of ten, though, you run to the bag, because you're trying to beat the first baseman getting there and he only has to touch the base, not tag you. Not sliding into first is something you learn in little league. Congratulations. Welcome to the Baysox. .
CharmCityCrab
Congratulations. Welcome to the Baysox. . Thanks! That actually sort of ties in with the whole "Not sliding into first base is something a big league player should know." theme of my last post. Maybe they need to be teaching it better down in Bowie to our up and coming prospects. Each of these posting milestones is a little bittersweet, though. When I hit 500 and they require me to pay to post more, I'm outta here. I no longer have the Orioles in HD and switched from cable to a dish for financial reasons and almost went without any television at all, paired with superslow inconsistent Internet. So, I'm definitely not paying to post on a website. I'm honestly a little flabbergasted that that business model works -- every other forum I've seen anywhere online on any topic is free. Ommaculate
I'm starting to wonder about his intelligence sliding into first in spring training with a bad back. How smart is that?
JTrea81
Three things: First - it is Spring Training, when players miss 5 days because of a hangnail because they are overly cautious. Not saying that there shouldn't be valid concern but it is ST. Second - I bet nobody thinks that Vlad is a luxury now... We'll be lucky to get 100 games with Lee, Hardy and Roberts all in the lineup together... Third - It could be a battle between Bell and Reimold for the last roster spot as Bell has looked good at 1B and the Orioles obviously aren't thrilled with the idea of Scott at 1B. NewMarketSean
From Rotoworld, today 8:45 AM: Roberts was held out of workouts Tuesday due to back spasms, but doesn't think it will keep him out of the lineup for long. "I never really said anything because I wanted to keep playing," said Roberts. "When I get them, they usually come on and then they go away on their own after a couple days. I probably didn't help things by sliding when I already had back spasms, but that wasn't the cause of them." Look for him to return later this week. You still can have both Bell and Reimold. Bench: Bell,Fox,Izzy,Reimold. Scott would be playing first base and either Reimold or Pie would play left. That is if they are ok with Fox as the backup catcher.

Obviously Pie is in the bullpen.
Can_of_corn
Second - I bet nobody thinks that Vlad is a luxury now... I do. Nolan is looking like its 2009 all over again and I would rather have him on the roster. Give me the young guy over the star in decline every day of the week. SammyBirdland
Give me the young guy over the star in decline every day of the week. Last year Vlad beat all of the Orioles in BA, HR, and RBI. Two Orioles beat him in OBP. One Oriole beat him in SLG and OPS. As long as Vlad hasn't grown too much older over the off-season since his World Series appearance, he very well may lead the Orioles in almost all batting categories this season. He reiterated Wednesday morning that the spasms were caused by him diving into first base during Monday night's game against the Yankees. I'm pretty sure that's supposed to say "were not caused". Or he could put up pretty much the same line as Reimold, for roughly 20 times the cost. If Nolan is back to his 2009 level of play then Vlad might be worth a win or two over the course of the season. Of course Vlad can't even pretend to play the outfield anymore so he limits what Buck can do in ways that Reimold would not.
Wilshade
Okay. Am I the only one thinking this . . . What the heck does BRob's wife do to him during the off-season? I mean he didnt start getting these back issues until after he was married, right? He got better the last half of last season. And, we didnt here a peep about his back until spring. I'm just sayin' . . . . :slytf:
