What was so bad about it?

They certainly offered him a fair extension.

Not my recollection at all. I recall hearing long ago (through Peace21 and/or other insiders and/or the press) that Bedard's agent proposed a long-term deal last winter and the Oriole front office simply never responded to it one way or the other, and never made a counteroffer. Bedard was insulted that the FO didn't even have the courtesy to respond and decided that in the future he wasn't going to listen to a long-term deal from the FO unless it was an offer he couldn't possibly refuse.

If that's what happned, it's pretty bad if you ask me, but since it didn't happen on MacPhail's watch you'd hope Bedard wouldn't hold it against him.

Actually I think Duquette lowballed Bedard, Bedard countered, Duquette said he'd have to get back to him after talking to Angelos and Bedard said screw it I'll play out my contract and go to FA.

I would hope the fanbase would be smarter than that. If Bedard doesn't want to be here, there's no reason to turn him into a villain. The guy just wants to leave, so we'll grant his request without him asking for it. This isn't a situation that's been handled poorly. I believe Mussina's negotiations or lack there of were very public. Bedard has handled this the right way...
I don't disagree with any of the points you're making. However, it's possible that you're confusing the average fan with the type of fan that posts here; the latter I'd say is much more informed. There are a lot of fans who take the information solely from the local papers and don't have the time to invest beyond that. FWIW, I'm not at all talking about the issue of which is the "better fan" because I feel that is arbitrary, subjective title of no real value.

Yeah, unfortunately I've seen the ignorance of those other fans who post comments on the Sun page and elsewhere. I would have thought that only the fan that knows a lot about the team would be the only fan that was left. I guess it's nice to see that we still have "average" fans...

Assistant GM? How about Special Assistant to the Special Assistant to the President of Baseball Operations?

I say we make Flanny the intern of that kid from Yale who complained a couple years ago that he didn't get to do anything as an intern for the Orioles. ;)
