Former Oriole Erik Bedard gave up his first spring run today after five scoreless innings. He had allowed only one hit in those five innings.

I suppose the Mariners want him to be a starter but I wonder if Bedard might make a good closer at this stage of his career. Let's face it, he's never thrown 200 innings in his career. At 32 years of age, coming off of 3 years of arm problems, maybe that's the best move for him.

I have no doubt he could be a lights out closer or bullpen ace. The only issue is whether back-to-back outings and little rest between appearances would be just as, if not more, harmful to his arm.

It's been such a shame with him regarding the injuries. I guess you can say that about a lot of supremely talented pitchers over the years. Stay healthy Erik!

Anyway has anyone actually seen this guy pitch in Seattle? Is he still the pitcher he was over here? It's kind of sad that he's fighting for a spot in the rotation this spring..

He's not fighting for a spot in the rotation....as long as his arm is attached to the left side of his body, he's gonna pitch for them. He's been dominant this spring.

Bedard is now 0-4 to start the season with a 7.71 ERA in 18.2 innings and a WHIP over 2.0.

He hasn't been too sharp yet, but I still wouldn't write him off. Yesterday was a decent outing except that he walked a lot of guys, 5 in 5 innings.
