What does this team lack that is needed for us to contend?

Putting aside things like more scouts, better structure, international presence, etc....

I am talking on the ML team...What upgrades and at what positions, are needed for us to contend IYO?

They lack a true enforcer who will bean somebody after a 3 game sweep. They don't instill enough fear in the opposition and the lack of bench clearing brawls is frustrating. This team has no heart, or killer instinct and are content bending over for the rest of the league. When we do acquire a true brawler, other teams will then respect us and perhaps we will some more games.

Same thing I said before the season started:

1. An inning eater who will give you a 4.00 ERA. A guy that who will routinely go 7IP+. Basically another Guthrie type.

2. An elite level hitter. Preferably at 1B.

3. 1-2 reliably consistent relief pitchers.

I think if you augment a Tex type at 1B, this offense is helped tremendously. We already have the SS that we need. I still have faith in Mark Reynolds. The issues we're having right now are certainly at 2B and RF, just no production there, really. 1B is certainly a problem as well.

I tend to agree with you Puck... Another Guthrie would help .... IMO the Orioles have a lot of average to good baseball players but no STARS!

Players who have won. Period. Outsdie of Vlad, and Lee to an extent, we have a roster of career losers. It's a mindset we simply can't find.

Who did the Rays have on the team the year they went from worst to 1st. In fact the players had been through several last place finishes.

The Rays had a bench clearing brawl with the Yankees, which in turn lit a fire that burned within them. They raced to the top of the division, thanks to that brawl.

I think we could always use mo better bats, but I think the offense's problem is mostly mental. They don't trust the next guy to pick them up, so they try to do too much. The Oakland series was a perfect example of this. They swung for fences that were impossible to reach, rather than taking what came to them and getting singles or at least advancing the runners, as Oakland did.

Upgrades at 1st, 2nd, short and 3rd, plus left and right field, DH, bench power and speed, TOR starter, LOOGY, closer, middle relief. Other than that, we're set for a run.

When I say "upgrades" I mean, in some cases, guys who are not only productive but who can stay healthy for a whole season - maybe even two.
