Well, several posters here (myself included) are going to have their theory tested, for better or worse. Given that the hiring season is over and there aren't too many appealing guys looking for work, we will see just how much of a destination UM really is right now.

Yeah, this is really bizarre timing. Must have to do with Jordan Williams in some manner.

Ouch. I thought it was crazy the folks who thought he would be gone after his contract expired, but I guess they were right + 1.

This really stings.

In any event, a tip of the cap to Garry Williams for all he did for this university. He took Maryland basketball to new heights and was one of the best in-game coaches of his generation. Here's to our future hall-of-fame coach, Gary Williams! I hope you enjoy your retirement, you'll be missed.

That's what I had thought. I would imagine the way this past season finished was very disheartening to Gary, but with Jordan in the fold, next season figured to be better. Upon him announcing he'd be heading to the NBA, next season begins to look pretty bleak.

And if Gary's just calling it quits out of nowhere, what's the likelihood of Faust/Bruenig/Anderson asking to be released from their LOIs? Wouldn't surprise me at all. This could end up leading to a complete rebuild of the program from the ground up. If they get the right coach, that could be a good thing and might not be as painful in the short term either. Get the wrong coach and the Terps could be ACC basement-dwellers for years.

Sounds official. LINK

Maryland coach Gary Williams is retiring, the school announced on Thursday. Williams will have a news conference on Friday.

Williams coached 22 season at Maryland, winning the national title in 2002.

"It's the right time," Williams said in a news release. "My entire career has been an unbelievable blessing. I am fiercely proud of the program we have built here. I couldn't have asked any more from my players, my assistant coaches, the great Maryland fans and this great university. Together, we did something very special here."

WOW!

That's absolutely amazing.

Now, what does MD do? If you are the Terps, you have to throw a ton of money at Stevens.

Everyone keeps saying this, but I'm yet to see any reason why anyone would think this would be a possibility. There have been some high profile jobs out there the past 2 years, and he's stayed put and re-upped with Butler. So, other than top dollars... why would he?

    • As someone else pointed out, he has always been a high strikeout guy and still found success, and plenty of hitters are very productive despite high strikeout numbers. I would also expect that to improve with experience, but even if this year is fully representative of the player he will be for us, that's still a very solid player. The 2024 AL rookie class is pretty weak though, I won't argue that.
    • Anything at the plate is a bonus. His defense alone warrants playing him right now.
    • If we can get hot from here on out, right through the playoffs, wouldn't that be a blessing and the unexpected.
    • I would expect it’s about easing him in (first game back in field).  They are going to be cautious with him coming back from a concussion.
    • 3 consecutive great starting pitcher games. Playoff performance level. The batshit a bit to a win, hopefully heating up for the next impressive run!
    • Hyde just said hopes Cano is back tomorrow. Soreness. Maybe that explains the 2 pitch outing. ….
    • Norby was hot for awhile but he's back to struggling the past couple weeks.  I think Cowser is who he is to an extent -- a very talented hitter who has always had high strikeout totals.  The league adjusted to his weaknesses and he's trying to adjust back, but it will probably take some time. Holliday just seems like he's not all there yet.  I think the expectations and hype machine messed with his head a bit, and now he's got to work his way back to finding his rhythm and his confidence.  He's only 20. Mayo hasn't had enough at bats. O'Hearn is simply not an every day player.  He's good when used as a role player. Adley is really the only one I'm concerned about at this point.  Some say they think he's playing hurt, but I'm not really buying it.  If he's playing hurt then why is he DHing at all when his bat is lifeless?  If he's hurt then send him down before he has to get sent down for forgetting how to hit.
