New Coach Search

Recommended Posts

And let me rant on Gary for a second. You can't even leave at a freaking good time. You have to go and suprise everyone in the coaching community and do it in May. Not only that but if you had left two years ago there is no doubt we get Miller or Dixon, or Grant. If you gut out another year and let people know it's your farewell you at least give people enough time to send out feelers and get a proper search in place. You did your university bad but the sheep will look past that just like they've looked past your mediocre success the last 10 years.

The only thing I can blame Anderson with - and even this is questionable since he has only been on the job 9 months - is they should have had a plan in place for when Gary wanted to step down. It sounds like they had no plan or the not-very- good plan of hiring a top, young coach away from some other elite program. To me it made no sense why Miller would leave Arizona for Maryland when he had Az on the cusp of greatness.

It sounds to me like Gary and the Md contingent thought they had several interested parties in the bag, so it wasn't necessary to groom a replacement internally. I wonder if Gary is regretting his retirement decision now that it has been shown not to be the case?

As for Turgeon, here is another article which describes him as a "below the radar home run": http://www.statefansnation.com/index.php/archives/2011/03/14/mark-turgeon-a-below-the-radar-homerun/ Ironically it comes from our friends down at NC State during their coaching search. Apparently Turgeon was real high in this blogger's list of candidates. Also of note, Turgeon's twitter account is getting a lot of Maryland followers. I guess he is the guy. I wish him the best but what a disaster.

I agree with CCBIRD. Gary could have and should have handled this better. I don't blame KA because I think he was blind sided and got talked into the whole "Maryland is a prime destination" thing. Turgeon will run a fine, upstanding program; but there will be no buzz, no excitement, and probably few sweet sixteens.

In any of your opinions is there anyone available that is going to take the program to the next level?

I believe Anthony Grant could. I believe in Ehsan too but he pretty much can't be hired having no HC experience.

I've has been told that by a Texas source, that UMD has not made a direct inquiry (not that they would have to) on Barnes. Also told Barnes would not be interested.

Who can blame him, he's got a great thing going on in Texas right now. I never understood why his name was being mentioned to begin with.

Kudo's for the scoop Chris, I'm glad to see that you're making some in roads.

Any news on Todd Bozeman? He could be a nice replacement because he can really recruit the Bmore area. With a high profile job, Bozeman can really take off and become an elite coach.

I've become a fan of Bozeman and am all for him getting a second chance, but he and MD are not a good fit.

Not hearing anything...just curious, would you have any interest in Bruce Pearl? Or does how he he was forced to leave Tennessee completely eliminate him in your eyes?

If you get to guys like Mooney or Turgeon, you should be holding multiple interviews.

...

Earlier I wrote these are the names that interest me:

1) Mark Few, Gonzaga

2) Jay Wright, Villanova

3) Brad Stevens, Butler

4) Lorenzo Romar, Washington (Recently signed long-extension)

5) Rick Barnes, Texas

6) Shaka Smart, VCU

7) Mike Brey, Notre Dame

8) Bruce Pearl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Pearl)

9) Anthony Grant, Alabama

10) Tom Crean, Indiana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Crean_%28basketball_coach%29)

11) Frank Martin, Kansas State (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Martin_%28basketball%29)

12) Mark Turgeon, Texas A&M

13) Jeff Capel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Capel_III)

I think we can take Pearl and Martin off of any real world MD wish list involving any input from Gary Williams.

I love Pearl, I think he's an amazing recruiter and a great in-game coach. I think he could keep his nose clean given a second chance. That said, MD would NEVER give him that chance, no way. Not with GW giving any input, not with KA at the helm. I can't necessarily blame them, but Pearl is the ultimate, grade A example of High Risk v. High Reward.

I'm surprised to see the latest on Brey, he was not my choice, but I figured his interest would be higher. I'll have to think more on Tubby Smith, but my first thoughts were not positive.

I'd like MD to present offers to Few and Wright and make them say no.

Re: Stevens, Despite Butler’s success over the past two seasons, there is little doubt that Maryland is a better overall job. Better facilities, better recruiting grounds, higher TV exposure, two large media-markets, and the ACC over the Horizon League. That said, it does not make the job necessarily better for Stevens. He recently signed a 10 year extension. He is a Indiana native. He has taken that program to back-to-back NCAA Championship Games. He is not going to be touched in his Conference any-time soon. I just don't see it happening.

All the guys in your top 7 have been ruled out except for Smart and Romar. Because we are down to the 2nd teir guys you have to step back and figure out who is best for the program and bring some guys in to interview. Along with possibly putting feelers out privately for other name coaches. No, this process can't drag on and needs to be concluded by the end of this week but it would be just as foolish to jump on a Turgeon without interviewing anyone else. Anderson needs to be using the prestige of the MD basketball program to get the best coach available and not freaking out and jumping at the first person willing to take the job.
