I've spent some time on the AZ boards and its definitely interesting. They just cannot believe anyone would ever leave for another program. They ask why someone would want to be "third fiddle" to Duke, UNC. They don't think anyone would ever be able to compete against those two for the top recruits in the area.

As Gary has shown, you can win a National Title without winning the conference or without getting ALL the recruits from UNC or Duke.

I kinda feel bad for Arizona. Really sucks for them right now.

Although it is a good time to be a Terp fan right now. Like everyone's been saying I think we're about to enjoy some very nice years and some top flight recruits in College Park.

Not taking pleasure in someone else's pain here, but the fact that UA fans seem to be unanimous and passionate about not wanting Miller to leave should tell you we'd be getting a good coach.

Brent Harris via Twitter a few minutes ago:

Full court press being put on Sean Miller! *Want to bring him back to Maryland tonight on Mr Biscottis jet.. *#getadealdone

It's stuff like this that makes the MD job all the more coveted, Plank and Bisciotti are extremely powerful and persuasive people.

Its a legit question and most of the time, they will be third fiddle.

BUT this is the kind of hire that can put MD on a different level.

I honestly didn't think they would be smart enough to go this route. I expected a guy like Brey or Barnes.

Miller is a big time hire IMO and even if they are 3rd fiddle in the ACC(btw, they have more ACC wins than UNC over the last 10-12 years I believe), they could still be a national title contender.

Don't forget what a Sean Miller coached team did to Duke just a few months ago.

Something else that hasn't been mentioned yet...

Last month NC State and Debbie Yow wanted to interview Sean Miller for the NC State job. Yow and a bozo reporter accused Gary Williams of sabotaging their efforts to get Miller. I believe the reporter said that Gary Williams called Miller and told him to stay away from Yow and the NC State. Perhaps, just perhaps, if a conversation did happen between Gary and Miller at that time, perhaps Gary told Miller that he was seriously thinking about retiring. If Maryland is Miller's "dream Job" maybe Gary told him to wait because the job may be opening up sooner than later.

Just something to think about...

And Steve Bisciotti, one of Gary's closest friends, is apparently in Vegas with KA to help close the deal. If nothing else, connecting the dots at least leads me to believe that Sean Miller was the top guy recommended by Gary to be his replacement.

Were I taking a guess, I'd say there is a 70% chance Miller is our new coach. It would be a real downer if he turns us down. I think Shaka Smart and Jay Wright may be in my top three as well. Ah well, we'll see how this plays out.

And Arizona, while they might be better on the court some years, will always be 2nd fiddle in that conference to UCLA in terms of stature and prestige. I think Arizona and Maryland are pretty close to even in terms of their attractiveness to top coaches, albeit for different reasons. Which one rates ahead of the other probably depends on the individual coach and certain intangibles, in this case geography. If Sean Miller was a west coast guy, we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

Yes! He was interviewed by two TV stations and seemed pleased with how everything was handled. That's why I mentioned on my other post we can thank him for talking Gary into making this move now. He was asked whether Gary would sit with him court side and he just smiled. Didn't answer the question. Mentioned they would be doing more golfing.

    • There have been 2-3 times when it seemed logical to call him up but they don’t.   I’ve never understood this thing they have for Baker.  Hey, Cole Irvin is available again!!
    • While we lost some talented players, I think the consensus was some of the players we lost were actually blocking more talented prospects. The loss of Westburg and Urias should have been mostly offset by Holliday and Mayo. Instead, they were truly abysmal.  Povich had some nice moments but he was disappointing as well.  Maybe our expectations were too high - Elias is not going to hit on every prospect, and even the ones that turn out good may take a while to adjust. Still, I think it is fair to have expected more out of Mayo and Holliday since the organization deemed them ready to promote.  In addition to the prospects, you had Adley hit a wall, going from a 6 WAR pace to replacement level, and Cowser and O'Hearn both struggling.  Certainly injuries hurt us, but we should have been strong enough to overcome them. Maybe not to sustain a 105 win pace but I think it is fair to say we should have been able to beat 95 wins and win the division even with the injuries.
    • I was wondering what the knee-jerk reaction would be to an ugly game last night, but the truth is that the bullpen is fine, as is the rest of the team. We lack a true lockdown closer, but we have six arms by my count that are very good relievers in Akin, Perez, Coulombe, Webb, Cano, and Domingez. And you can add Suarez to that list next week, and possibly Povich, who should also make the PS roster as a lefty long relief option to mirror Suarez. Anyway, that game could have and would have gone much differently, IMO, if it were a playoff game. Burnes obviously stays in longer and gets at least through the top of the order if not back down to the bottom third to hand it over to the bullpen. Hopefully we'd be able to scratch out some runs, but that's not the bullpen's fault.  This is an extremely good team with a lead. Let's hope we get on the board early and often starting tonight.
    • Boy, Brandon Young who has some decent numbers at Norfolk must be injured or unimpressive to the front office to not even get a look for this bullpen. Bryan Baker is almost a waste of a call up.
    • Povich is off vs Detroit at least. Even if they carry a 9 man pen, Doubt that 5 will be left handers
    • I hate to say it because they are all eligible to succeed or fail ( DC just coming back ), would probally go with Soto.
