And we've got our first thumbs down to the hire with this piece by Mike DeCoury of the SportingNews.

DeCourcy is all over the place here:

1.) You won't find anyone who will say anything bad about him.

2.) MD needed a good recruiter, but that's not what he's known for.

3.) Can he fix the broken relationships with AAU coaches? Absolutely, he's a bright decent person he says.

4.) But is he right for the job? Not a chance says DeCourcy.

He conflicted himself several times in this piece, IMO.

Decourcy has always taken swipes at MD when he could. When I see writing like this it tells me that someone that begins with an agenda and has to reach for a way to back it up. I think everyone knows that recruiting is going to be the million dollar question with Turgeon. He sounds like a willing recruiter which is more than people could say for Gary. If he is a willing recruiter and surrounds himself with guys like Ransom and others that have AAU connections he should be fine. The more I've thought about it the more I'm happy we went with the proven commodity with the X's and O's and is an unknown with regards to bigtime recruiting vs the other way around. Don't get me wrong, recruiting is essential but Turgeon has to be given a chance to see what he can do at a legit program like Maryland.

This is spot on IMO. If Bino leaves, I'll be worried. If he stays, I'll be happy.

We need Ehsan to stay just as much. He's just an instrumental in recruiting, if not more so. Booth is definitely gone, but I really, really hope the other two stay. If not, the next few year are going to be an absolute disaster. I'd at least like to be mediokre while we build.

By all the barometers we usually associate with that word, Turgeon doesn't qualify. To date, he hasn't regularly recruited blue-chip prospects; more often, his players are unheralded workers who develop throughout their multi-year careers. Texas A&M plays a slow, deliberate style. Turgeon's press conference demeanor can be rather like his teams: quiet, sparse and even downright boring.

Where have I heard that before???:scratchchinhmm:

He also hasn't really been in position to do so, has he? Has any coach landed blue-chip prospects at Wichita State? I'm sure he had a better chance at Texas A&M, but that's still not exactly a basketball school.

From everything I've read so far, this sounds like a good solid hire. With Miller and Brey saying no, Turgeon looks like a nice solid hire. I'm not excited by his lack of recruiting blue-chip players, but that may be because he knew he couldn't get them at his previous programs. Let's hope he can get this program back to where it used to be! Go Terps!

Hadn't thought of that, I guess time will tell. Don't get me wrong I love guys that are willing to put in the work and stick around for 4 years, but I think that they need to be used with a few blue chip guys as well.

Couldn't agree more. We absolutely need someone who can keep the local, top-tier guys around. In his press conferences, Turgeon specifically mentioned the talent in the area. So, I'm hoping his he has a plan for local recruiting.

When Miller rejected the offer, Maryland might have turned to any number of gifted coaches with demonstrated prowess in coaching and recruiting: Shaka Smart of VCU, Chris Mack of Xavier, Mick Cronin of Cincinnati, perhaps Anthony Grant of Alabama, if his interest could be stimulated.

 Maybe it's my blue-tinted glasses, but DeCourcy just made himself look stupid with this one.

Any one who calls this an Edsall is flat out wrong.

Agree......this hire is definitely more like a Edsel.

IMO, Anderson didn't miss the boat this time.....he sank it. And I have a sinking feeling that Maryland football and basketball are going to be painful to watch for a while. :(

Any chance that any of Turgeon's 2012 A&M recruits follow him to MD?

His two big recruits, Jamal Branch and Jordan Green, are both guards. I would think they would look at what should be a relatively crowded backcourt and stick with A&M or go elsewhere.

What don't you have a sinking feeling about?
