Would someone please defend Andy MacPhail

So, all I hear around here is Bullpen arms in FA are for the most part a crapshoot and people complain when we crap out. Come on. If Andy signs 3 guys off the scrap heap and they are horrible people would still be complaining about that too. Which I guess we did and you are(Rapada,Accardo,)

Logical thoughts have no place in whiner threads.

That is all I meant with this and other comments made he on his results. He can't buy the bats or the freaking arms. Even when overpaying. The agents and other Front Offices are laughing all the way to the playoffs. How did he win in Minnesota?

His first WS team he basically inherited like Cashman inherited his. But he did make some moves that paid off for his 2nd WS title. The problem is MacPhail has fallen out of touch with the game and basically admittted that being a GM is a younger man's game now. GMs in the division run circles around him and he's quickly becoming Syd Thrift part II.

MacPahil's bullpen consists of:

Two overpaid former closers with command issues (Gregg and Gonzales)

A guy who gets winded walking to the mound (Koji)

A guy coming off a shoulder injury (Berken)

A guy who has dominant stuff but who also makes a lot of mistakes out over the plate (Johnson)

Two scrapheap pickups (Accardo and Rapada)

He also has a second utility player on the team that can't hit a lick (Itzuris) and a backup catcher who really is a utility guy who can occasionally catch (Fox).

Let's just say I'm not impressed with MacPhail's ability to build a 25-man roster.

So what will it take for Angelos to send him packing? Or do you think he might actually walk away at the end of the year because he know he can't get the job done any longer? Could his pride actually cause him to leave?

The worse part is he traded our best reliever for a 3rd baseman that stinks. Just compare our 3rd basemen to the rest of the league.

Exactly. He had a chance to go out and get one of the best 3B man in the league for $ and decided to go with a project and lost our best trade chip in the process, a player we could have used to upgrade elsewhere via trade such as 1B.

Now he's got a 3B man who can't hit but also is a liability in the field as well.

I hate to say it, but I truly think Angelos enjoys his solid bottom line. Why else do you hire MacPhail and watch him never sign an impact free agent? Angelos was the guy who at one time went in and outbidded the Yankees for Albert Belle. He once was a guy who wasn't going to take second to anyone. Now, I think he's happy with a good bottom line and MacPhail is the guy to bring him that.

Or we could have kept Hernandez and watched him close the game tonight.

Right I know Angelos wants him to stay so he can continue to make money, but you've got to wonder if Andy will realize he no longer has the skills to be an effective GM in this league and will hang it up on his own.

Maybe Andy can get his nephew promoted to GM?

I think Klentak would actually be next in line. His nephew will never be a GM and has just ridden his uncle's coattails IMO. Our professional scouting stinks and Lee MacPhail is directly in charge of that.

Given my other posts, I was sure that would be read as the joke it was supposed to be.
