April 2013

16-11 record

9-6 vs. AL East

7-5 at home

9-6 on the road

1-2 in extra innings

4-5 in one run games

5.11 runs scored per game was 3rd in the AL

.757 OPS was 7th in the AL

.328 OBP was 7th in the AL

.265 BA was 5th in the AL

.429 SLG was 4th in the AL

1.19 HR/game was 5th in the AL

.846 OPS with runners in scoring position was 1st in the AL (.291/.377/.468)

3.81 ERA was 6th in the AL

1.07 HR allowed/game was 7th best in the AL

4.15 RA was 8th best in the AL

4.55 starters' ERA was 9th in AL

2.49 bullpen ERA was 2nd in AL

5.72 IP per start was 10th in AL

17 save opportunities was 1st in the AL (2nd was 13)

11 saves was tied for 1st in the AL (3-way tie)

6 blown saves was most in the AL (but only 2 losses resulted)

10 unearned runs allowed was 6th most in the AL

.37 errors per game (10 total) was 3rd fewest in the AL (.990 fielding %)

+7.6 UZR (10.5 IF, -2.9 OF)

+5 Rtot

+0.9 dWAR

Conclusion: Hitting great, bullpen very good (could have done better in some high leverage situations), starting pitching below average but not awful, defense above average but OF below average. Sounds right to me.

This is my favorite part of the post ;)

Yeah, hard to argue we were lucky in April. The only lucky element I see is the .846 OPS with runners in scoring position, which is why we're 3rd in runs/game while only 7th in overall OPS. We won't be that clutch all the time. By the same token, we had a fair number of unearned runs allowed despite an extremely low error rate, so that was "unlucky." Overall, I think it balances out and we are just about where we should be. Our actual record matches our Pythag. Those who ignored the improvements this team made in August and September should be eating some crow about now.

5.07 runs scored per game was 3rd in the AL

.829 OPS was 1st in the AL

.332 OBP was 1st in the AL

.285 BA was 5th in the AL

.497 SLG was 1st in the AL

1.64 HR/game was 1st in the AL

.803 OPS with runners in scoring position (approximate)

5.06 ERA was 14th in the AL

1.54 HR allowed/game was worst in the AL

5.18 RA was 13th in the AL

5.08 starters' ERA starters' ERA

5.03 bullpen ERA

5.69 IP per start

14 save opportunities was 4th in the AL

8 saves was tied for 6th in the AL

6 blown saves was tied for 4th most in the AL (3 losses resulted)

4 unearned runs allowed was tied for 2nd fewest in the AL

.32 errors per game (9 total)

+ 5.5 UZR (7.4 IF, -1.9 OF)

+8 Rtot

+0.3 dWAR

Cumulative through May 2013

5.09 runs scored per game was 2nd in the AL

.794 OPS was 1st in the AL

.330 OBP was 6th in the AL

.275 BA was 2nd in the AL

.464 SLG was 1st in the AL

1.42 HR/game was 1st in the AL

.824 OPS with RISP was 4th in the AL

4.45 ERA was 12th in the AL

1.31 HR allowed/game was 13th in the AL (i.e., 3rd worst)

4.67 RA was 11th in the AL

4.82 starters' ERA was 12th in the AL

3.79 bullpen ERA was 7th in the AL

5.79 IP per start was 11th in the AL

61% save percentage was 10th in the AL

14 unearned runs was tied for 6th best in the AL

.991 fielding percentage was best in the AL (19 errors total, best in the league)

13.1 UZR was 2nd in the AL (17.9 infield, -4.8 outfield)

+ 13 Rtot

+1.2 dWAR

Conclusion: The offense and the infield defense continued to be stellar in May. The offense was driven a little more by homers and a little less by RISP hitting compared to April, but was equally effective each month. The pitching was lousy all the way around, both starting and relief. JJ's 4 blown saves were the difference between going 19-9 for the month and going 15-13 instead. It could have been a great month, but we'll just have to settle for decent, and hope JJ has gotten over the hump now.

On to June!

+ 27 Rtot

+2.5 dWAR

Conclusion: The offense continued to be good in June, but slipped a bit due low OBP. RISP hitting was very good. The infield defense continued to be stellar in June, and the OF defense had a positive month as well, all in all , only 7 errors and 3 unearned runs for the month. Starting pitching was very inconsistent, despite very good performances from Tillman (6-0, 2.68 ERA) and Gonzalez (4-1, 2.88 ERA). The bullpen wasn't stellar in June, but did OK. The 'pen continues to pitch a lot of innings in a lot of close games, and you can't expect perfection with the pressure they're under.

.28 errors per game (7 total)

+ 11.4 UZR (5.6 IF, 5.8 OF)

+6 Rtot

-0.3 dWAR

Cumulative through July 2013

4.67 runs scored per game was 4th in the AL

.755 OPS was 3rd in the AL

+ 33 Rtot

+2.2 dWAR

Conclusion: The bats let us down in July. The starting pitching was much improved and went much deeper into games, the bullpen blew only one save opportunity all month, and the fielding remained stellar, as it has been all year. But .684 OPS, .657 with runners in scoring position, and 3.76 runs/game won't cut it. The bats need to wake up in August.

.27 errors per game (7 total)

+ 14.2 UZR (15.0 IF, -0.8 OF)

-1 Rtot

+1.8 dWAR

Cumulative through August 2013

4.72 runs scored per game was 3rd in the AL

.751 OPS was 3rd in the AL

.315 OBP was 10th in the AL

.263 BA was 5th in the AL

.436 SLG was 3rd in the AL

1.33 HR/game was 1st in the AL

.779 OPS with RISP was 2nd in the AL

4.32 ERA was 12th in the AL

+ 32 Rtot

+4.0 dWAR

Conclusion: The 1-8 record in one-run games told the story in August. The overall offensive numbers were good, but the O's lost a number of games when the pitchers did well, by scores of 3-2, 3-2, 4-3, 4-3, 2-1, 4-3, and 2-0. So, this really was a month where, even though the hitting was pretty good and the pitching was below average, the inability to get a few more key hits in some close games cost us some wins.

Conclusion: The pitching was decent in September, but the offense did poorly and the Orioles hit poorly with RISP this month. The defense trailed off, particularly in the second half of the month, and the O's had their first below average month for the year defensively. Overall, it was a mediocre finish to 2013.

I'm a few days late in posting this. Because of that, I wasn't able to find certain statistical rankings that included March 31 but excluded May 1-2. I've noted those accordingly.

March/April 2014

12-12 record

10-8 vs. AL East

5-6 at home

7-6 on the road

2-0 in extra innings

5-3 in one run games

4.61 runs scored per game was 6th in the AL*

.716 OPS was 9th in the AL (excludes March 31)*

.321 OBP was 11th in the AL (excludes March 31*

.266 BA was 2nd in the AL*

.395 SLG was 7th in the AL*

0.70 HR/game was 12th in the AL*

.305/.353/.399 with runners in scoring position (255 PA, 223 AB)**

* excludes March 31

** as of May 2

4.64 ERA was 12th in the AL (excl. 3/31; 4.49 ERA if included)

1.22 HR allowed/game was worst in the AL (excl. 3/31)

4.91 RA was 12th in the AL (excl. 3/31)

4.74 starters' ERA

4.02 bullpen ERA

5.78 IP per start (this is actually 6th in the AL as of 5/2)

9 save opportunities (8 was tied for 11th in the AL excluding 3/31)

7 saves (6 was 7th in the AL excluding 3/31)

2 blown saves was tied 11th most in the AL (excl. 3/31)

7 unearned runs allowed was tied for 5th fewest in the AL (ranking excludes 3/31)

.42 errors per game (10 total)

1.1 UZR (-2.7 IF, 3.8 OF) (as of May 2)

-3 Rtot (as of May 2)

-0.8 dWAR (as of May 2)

Conclusion: The offense managed to score a decent number of runs, albeit somewhat inconsistently, making up for a lack of power and walks by posting a high BA and performing very well in RISP situations. The starting pitching was poor. The bullpen did well in games where it was protecting a lead, not so well when the O's were behind, but overall they were decent. The infield defense suffered significantly from the absence of Manny and (for 8 games) Hardy, while the OF performed pretty well. Overall, the team was fortunate to be .500 for the month while playing a tough schedule, as they were -6 in run differential but +2 in one-run games.

    • HEY YANKEES! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnxNRPy_SOA
    • Yeah I'm all for sportsmanship but seeing 'Congratulations Yankees' at or near the top of the board is sickening, not gonna lie.  There is no high road when it comes to these clowns.  Boone's constant whining, the well-documented HP ump favoritism (I don't care if its framing or whatever, its happening, and its annoying AF), the whining about Judge getting hit on the hand while their guys constantly pitch inside including of course the Kjerstad play where they were literally cutting up on the bench as he lay prone on home plate, the ginormous payroll, the incredibly entitled fan base booing at pitches being called balls that are three inches off the plate, that stupid roll call, that stupid whistle after strikeouts, the stupid national media drooling over a Judge v Ohtani WS possibility, Nestor Cortes and his dumb mustache, the mediocre stadium that is revered simply because its called Yankee Stadium, the ridiculously short RF porch, the Soto Shuffle or whatever the hell it is. Congratulations my ass.  Screw those dudes.
    • Here's the deal. I doubt anyone on the Yankee's board congradulated us last year. This year they won the East. Whippie for them. It's like saying the IRS won tax season. IF, we do anything in the playoffs, we may meet again. But there are some significant hurdles before that. And they could easily lose along the way. Cleveland, Houston, Detroit, and KC are no walk in the park. I'll root for the O's to go as far as they can and that the Yankees are one and done. We are in. I hope we win one more so we play the opening round in Oriole Park. If not, we are still in and have to do what we got to do to go anywhere. Two years in a row. While the Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Tampa sleep. Year two with a heck of a lot more obstacles. This may not be a WS year but we are competitive, young, and a hell of a lot classier than that bunch in the Bronx.
    • The usage of Cano last night was poor, I don't even blame him really.  Yankees had 9-1-2 coming up, and Torres is well known (based on the telecast) to hit Cano well, and hit sinkers well.  He laced that hit to RF off him on Tuesday where the Yanks screwed up the baserunning.  And Soto got a hit off him that same inning.  So it was pretty predictable that these guys were going to tee off when he came in, and that's exactly what happened. Not to mention he's pitched a lot recently, and Burnes should have pitched another inning anyway.  Just baffling decisions by Hyde last night, and I'm not one to generally question those types of things.  Even if the Burnes thing was pre-ordained, the choice of Cano for that moment was terrible.
    • Why is this thread on the Oriole Talk section.    It probably does not belong on the OriolesHangout  at all but if it stays it should be on the MLB section.
    • If there's two outs and its not Judge in the hole, I'm probably going with Perez, crossing my fingers he gets the lefty, and then starting fresh the next inning with Coulombe or someone else.  If there's one out, I'm going w/ Coulombe.
