Tyler Townsend

I can not recall an O's minor leaguer with an OPS north of 900 receiving so little mention here.

Townsend's prospect status is haunted by huge strikeouts (better than 1 in 4 PAs) and extremely low BBs (around one in fifty PAs).

While I was weary of Brandon Waring's Frederick success, this board was much more enamored of Waring than of Townsend and Townsend is going to put up a superior OPS.

Townsend needs to work on the plate discipline, but his numbers are pretty impressive as it.

I'm impressed with his power and hit rate this year, but until he starts drawing more walks I cannot consider giving him being ready for a promotion, or seriously consider him a future big leaguer. Hopefully this low bb rate stretch is a fluke, but as the weeks go by it is looking otherwise.

If you look up some of the worst K/BB players in recent history (I picked Jim Presley, Mariano Duncan, and Cory Snyder), they all had significantly better minor league walk numbers than Townsend. Promoting him to a higher level while he's showing worse than a 10:1 K:BB ratio is a recipe for him to come crashing back to earth.

I agree the so:bb ratio is terrible. But the biggest reason I don't get too excited just yet is all of the injuries. If he can just stay healthy all year, I will deal with the poor plate discipline for one season.

I sure would like to see the Orioles leaving their prospects at a level until they get ahead of the game. He's ahead in OPS, but behind in the very important plate approach part of the game.

He seems like a drive for show, putt for dough type of player...he just can't putt.

Leave him in Frederick and make him prove he can either way cut down on the k's or pick up the walks. If he doens't learn when he's better than the competition, when will he learn?

I'd like to promote Townsend later this year, but there's no big hurry. He only had 83 games under his belt prior to this season. I agree the walks are a concern, so let's keep him at Frederick until we see some progress there.

I think more highly of Townsend than I ever did of Waring, but the K's are a definite concern, too.

Yes, let's let him get ahead of the league before he is promoted, he is only 1st in average, 3rd in home runs, 3rd in RBI's and 2nd in slugging pecentage with a plus .900 ops, and one error at first, I think they should wait a little longer.

He's a free swinger who has had tremendous success putting balls in play when he makes contact and hits well to all fields. He still has some pitch recognition issues, but obviously like many have said he needs to have a healthy season. As long as he's healthy, I really don't see him being promoted, especially with Mahoney close to returning for Bowie. He's been solid around first base and I've seen him make improvement with choppers hit his way but he still needs to work on some of his footwork around the base and receiving pickoff throws from the catcher.

I wonder where Waring ranked on those lists.

Do you think approach matters? If so, why not try to work on his approach and learn some good habits, then move him up?

A lot of stats matter. Not just OPS.

Looking at the AA Eastern League teams such as Akron (Cleveland), New Brittan (Twins), Reading (Phillies) and Erie (Tigers) they seem to not rush players from level to level. Some guys I have seen compete against Bowie for two years before moving up to AAA. It seems to me the farm systems are not rushed and allowing players to get as many at bats as possible at A and AA levels before moving to AAA. The line in the road for me has always been AA you accomplish good work there or find a new profession. There are always exceptions to this.

With this said I would like Townsend to spend 2011 in Frederick and if all goes well he starts 2012 in Bowie.

I've seen him, and I agree with you completely.
