Feeling better about Reynolds yet?

I think I am. For the purposes of this thread I am not really heavily considering his defense into the equation. But to be clear, it has not really been up to par.

According to ESPN he has the lowest Fielding Percentage and the most amount of errors of all MLB third basemen. BB-Ref has him worth -0.4 WAR defensively so far in 2011.

But we all know that we didn't get him here to play defense. We got him here to hit some dingers.

Right now Marky Mark is ranked 1st on the team in Walks, extra base hits, doubles, HR, and of course K's. Is that enough for you?

Would you be surprised to know his monthly splits look like this:

April .169/.253/.313 (2 HR)

May .215/.348/.430 (5 HR)

June .176/.364/.588 (2 HR so far)

And that he is OPSing 844 over the last 28 days (24 games)?

I started this thread because we all know that there was tons and tons of Reynolds bashing early on in 2011 (and rightfully so). My question is.......do some of you now think that we might be close to getting the guy we thought we were?

I always felt fine about Reynolds.

Me too.

I'm not surprised by his slow start. NL hitters transferring to the AL often struggle at first.

Whats encouraging is that he is among the leaders in pitches/AB = many walks, and he is striking out only 25% of the time as opposed to 35% last season. Of course, saying a 1/4 strike-out ratio is an improvement is disconcerting...

Lastly, I feel like his defense has improved as of late.

Was never worried about him. If you look back all of my posts said he would a month or two to adjust and then he would do fine.

He is an anomalous player but what he brings is a lot more good than bad. I wouldn't be surprised to see him lead the Orioles in HRs, RBI, BB, and OPS by the end of the season.

Agreed with both. He ain't gonna win no batting titles, but that's not what he's here for. He is who we though he was, and thats good enough for me.

Wow, so no one at all was worried after that April?

Maybe I'm the one who is misremembering the general tone of this board. I don't mind admitting that I was pretty down on him after the first month. But I'm happy that he's turning it around now of course.

There is only ten posts in this thread. Do you honestly think the people that relentlessly bashed him and wanted him released are gonna come on and say anything positive about him?

I had confidence in Reynolds to catch up to the league eventually. But I worried that they were fiddling with his approach too much in order to cut down the K's.

His first three years in the league he hit .279, .239 and .260. Last year he hit .198 because of a September where he hit .078 thanks in large part to an injured hand. He also hit 0 home runs that month too. So I still expect a lot more from Reynolds. History has shown he should be a .240 hitter with 30 home runs and 90 RBI and an OPS around .800 or higher. Maybe he's still adjusting, because I think his average should be higher. Plus he's still seeing a lot of pitchers for the first time. So I think he should start to take off a lot more than he has. And thankfully he is striking out a lot less.

I wasn't worried because I was paying attention to his at bats and his statistics. His line drive percentage was solid. He was making great contact. His approach was great (169 batting average, but a 253 OBP), but the hits just weren't dropping. There were at least 4 foul balls that were absolute moonshots that missed being homeruns by 5-15 feet.
