Feeling better about Reynolds yet?

Stats taken from Jagwar's post:

Mark Reynolds by month

April (25 Games)

169/253/313/566

Awful.

May (27 games)

215/348/430/778

Getting there.

June (16 games)

300/435/720/1155

Now we're talking!

Heh. I remember April. I couldn't stand this guy, every at-bat was a struggle. High resentment led right into May and even though he was improving it was still hard not to feel nervous when he stepped up to the plate. But he's steadily improved and June has been a pleasure to watch him play (well, offensively I should say... his defense still needs a lot of work).

I could have sworn it counts as an 0 for 1...

Yes it does... in terms of batting average. But an error still means the hitter gets on base. Is that not accounted for in the calculation for OBP?

For example, if a hitter reaches base 4 times due to an error in a game, his batting average is .000, but is his OBP 1.000?

No, his OBP is .000 as well.

Correct, ROEs are exactly the same as a strikeout or a 6-3 when it comes to OBP. And if you hit a screaming liner 45 feet to the left of Andruw Jones in his prime, he runs over and it clanks off his glove you're 0-1. But if you hit exactly the same screaming liner with Karim Garcia playing center and it two-hops the fence without Garcia ever getting within 30 feet of the ball, you're golden.

Maybe I'm just optimistic, but I feel like this team is about to go on another winning streak. The past four games they've racked up hit totals of 14, 8, 18, and 10--that has to eventually translate into runs. Reynolds has improved dramatically, Lee is showing signs of heating up, and Hardy has been fantastic. I bet were back at .500 by next week.

If that's the case I just hope we're not 5 games under .500 by the following week, as seems to keep happening following a winning streak.

And on cue he makes a pretty bad error.

I like the guy, but man he's brutal sometimes.

But its all routine plays. I like what one of the announcers said the other day. When he has time to think, it seems like he is second guessing himself.

I don't think he is a bad defensive player at all...But I do think he is mentally beaten up defensively right now and is in a big defensive slump.

Yeah, I definitely agree with that. You're right that a lot of this mistakes seem to be mental i.e. taking too long to look a runner on third back and forcing a bad throw against the Nats. He makes enough great plays that it makes me believe he has to be better than how he's playing now.
