How Much Longer Can We Afford Reynolds At 3B?

Reynolds is starting to hit the ball and if we didn't have Vlad as DH I would have moved Reynolds off of 3B. I can't remember a worse 3B playing for the Orioles. Embarassing! He makes a nice play once in awhile and then he leaves you totally frustrated as you watch him get distracted on plays he should make.

Too few chances to rate a guy but Snyder at 1B looks like a lost cause as well. Put him in the OF or back behind the plate. I think that was mentioned after the game.

Was Matusz's poor effort today a backlash at not having Wieters behind the plate today? Tatum is not the answer. We should have gotten a veteran catcher prior to the start of the season. Matusz should be embarassed after his pathetic effort yesterday. He is full of himself as some on here have mentioned. Isn't he the pitcher that some speculated made a comment about Jim Palmer last season?

Reynolds made 2 errores in a game yesterday. Brooksie once made 3 errors in an inning.

I knew Brooks Robinson, Brooks was a friend of mine, Reynolds Sir is no Brooks Robinson.

Did you really attempt to brush off the ding on Reynolds by saying "Once Upon A Time" Brooks had a horrible inning? Did you really just do that?

Some things don't deserve a response...........especially when you make ignorant comments concerning someones potential health matter. Unbelievable! We are so smart. If you are satisfied with our 3B defense you should never complain again about anything......not the price of a gallon of gas or even your BGE bill. I think we've been down this road before. Do something creative once in awhile. Surprise everyone.

The interesting thing about Reynolds is he seems pretty capable of playing a perfectly fine 3B. He usually gets to balls he should get to and isn't too slow to react or anything. Instead it's just that he boots the ball or misthrows it more often than the average guy.

I am reluctantly coming to the conclusion that Keith Law was right about Reynold's defense. He's about as bad on balls hit slowly in front of him as any 3B I have seen. He really has to work on that, and he's going to have to continue hitting well to justify keeping him out there despite his glove.

But that's the thing...it's the simple stuff that a good defensive third baseman should do that he messes up on.

He does seem capable...I don't really think his range is an issue. However I don't want anyone hitting the ball at him during a late and close situation.

Right. But so, while no one would confuse him with a plus defender, at least he's only really hurting you when he makes an error. It's frustrating when it happens but I can live with that easier than with a guy who just can't field his position.

I mentioned this in another thread but I wonder if some of this might be a coaching issue with Reynolds. He was never this bad defensively in Arizona and he improved his play at third a lot when he was working with Matt Williams everyday. Whatever they were doing seemed to be clicking for him. Maybe he just needs some kind of specialized coaching from someone with a lot of experience at third base?

I just think Reynolds has some of the worse eye/hand coordination of any major league baseball player. Most of his errors and inability to make contact seems to come from lack of eye/hand coordination. The tools are there for him to be an oustanding player all around, and the fact that he can hit some monster home runs and make some nice plays in the field occasionally speak to his tools, but he appears incapable of doing things consistently. Honestly, it's just the nature of the beast. You have to either learn to live with these mistakes or go in a different direction because these don't look like fixable things to me.

The bottom line is that Mark Reynolds is going to do some things to help your ball club and at the same time, he's going to hurt you occasionally. The hope is that the good outweighs the bad.

I think there is just a loss of concentration for him at times. He also tends to drop his arm down on some throws.

BBR has his defensive WAR of -.8.

UZR has him at -.1.

End of the day, his errors make him look worse than he is. He is making a lot of errors on routine plays, plays he makes most of the time.
