Why is Nick choking up?

Choking up gives you better bat control, if you are in a slump like Nick is somewhat getting out of right now, it's not a bad idea at all. When he starts making hard contact more often maybe he will stop choking up, maybe he won't. Either way it shouldn't be a problem as far as power goes. I know Bonds cheated and was bigger than Nick, but he choked up a considerable amount I do believe.

Its a good point about Bonds but he is more of an exception than a rule.

Choking up does usually allow you to have better bat control and make more contact but making contact isn't Nick's issue. His contact rate is the highest of his career.

Choking up is fine IF it is a situation where you just need to get the bat on the ball. I have never known a professional to do it on a regular basis. It will rob you of every bit of power you have and seriously limit what you can do with the bat.

I know it is a different sport, but if you ever asked a pro golfer if he choked up on the club for every shot he would laugh at you. That type of stuff is for amateurs not the best in the world.

I think you ought to look at the 2 inches of grip above Rory's hands on a bunch of his swings.

Rory and no other professional choke up on a shot unless they absolutely need to. Are you claiming he goes through 70 shots in a round and they are all choked up on? Uh...no. I would be surprised if even 5% of the time he went into that mode. It is a very specific shot you need that setup for, and it is pretty rare.

Unless he wanted to keep the ball down out of the wind or was in between clubs it isn't happening. Maybe you should watch a little closer.

If Nick is choking up a lot of the time that is a sign of pure desperation IMO. And you better believe that what little power he had went right out the window with that approach.

    • If this was the 8th or 9th inning I would agree.  But to lose someone for the rest of the game in the 6th? Just leave Holliday in. He would’ve had another at bat against a righty later anyways.
    • I think there's something else beyond the injuries,  but a person would have to be naive to think this lineup wouldn't be drastically different with even 2 of the RH hitters on that list.
    • Also, our Bad Manager had Mullins bunt with men on 1st and 2nd and nobody out precisely…two games ago, on Sunday in Detroit. Fouled off the first two, then flied out rather meekly to center field (advancing the runners anyway on nice tag-ups by Soto and Henderson). But then Santander popped up and Kjerstad hit a weak tapper back to the pitcher, so we went empty. Gave up an out with one of our hottest hitters — just to set up two dudes who couldn’t come through. I didn’t see Hyde getting too much praise as a Good Manager for doing that on Sunday. If he’d gone right back to the same strategy that failed a couple days ago in the exact same situation, then we’d be telling him “job well done” this time? Only if it worked, I’d wager…
    • Different era obviously, but Rochester AAA manager Earl Weaver replaced O's skipper Hank Bauer in '68, just a year and a half after Bauer won the World Series.
    • A good manager would have instructed him to bunt Well not for nothing, but I would like 100 dollars for every time a Good Manager did not bunt with first and second with nobody out. Now if the SF pitcher was LH, I would be onboard. If they were down by 1, maybe. Why would you not let Mullins hit there?
    • Putting aside the issue of “not counting” stats that don’t fit the argument, I’m curious who he would have had hit there. What were the other options? Eloy Jimenez (1 for his last 23) Coby Mayo (3 for 37 with 21 Ks as a pro) Jackson Holliday (0 for last 22 vs LHPs  with 12 Ks) Livan Soto (~.600 career AAA OPS vs LHPs)   Not saying Slater was some slam dunk pick, but I honestly don’t really even understand how folks can criticize Hyde for those types of decisions anymore. Every lever he has available to pull is clearly marked *WRONG* in flashing red lights.
    • Is it really the injuries?
