Passing on a few things I was told my by guy today...

Lots of talk with the Pirates and there may well be a multi player deal here. Bay and Marte are two guys we've asked about.

He still thinks Tejada ends up with the Cubs. Doesn't think there's much of a chance a deal with NYY can be worked out.

Mora to Philly is a possibility. Looking at prospects in return.

Still can't find a trader for Hernandez.

FO is realy high on lower level pitching prospect. Wouldn't be surprised to see Penn, Liz and others traded this winter.

Free agent signings will be limited to pitching and backups.

Has not heard of any talks about free agents from Japan

Tried to drum up interest in Millar and Huff last week.

Not much expected to happen before the winter meetings.:(

Read as little or as much into this as you want.

The question is, do we trade for Bay and keep Bedard and BROb, thinking we can go for it?

Or is the thinking that we can get Bay cheaply and that it is an oppurtunity we can't pass up regardless of what happens with Bedard and BRob?

It seems like both could happen.

Well, if they think we can go for it, it would be foolish.

What i meant by that is that if we aren't in a Wild Card race we could easily trade Bay(who if performs like 900 OPS player he is) for more than we gave up. I am guessing Cabrera/Reimold/C-Type could net Bay.

This team can add Marte and Bay and contend ?

And I can pick the correct 6 numbers in each of the next 4 Lotto drawings too. :rolleyes:

Why in the world would we be targeting a 29 yr old OF and a 32 year old LH RP ?

Is PA still in charge ? Are we still being delusional that we are a player or two away ?

If we can put the best offer on the table for Bay- what does that tell you ?

It tells me we are hurting our future. We aren't giving them Gibbons and Cabrera for Bay. And we aren't getting Bay as a bonus for taking back a bad contract.

      This is probably correct, but I could see things getting ugly for them if they are complacent. They need to win at a 60% rate from here out to reach 90 wins this season. That could be tough.

      I agree completely. It is a risk. But IMO the potential reward is worth the risk. You can’t make the shots that you are unwilling to take.

      I mostly agree about players generally being able to deal better than us with the ups and downs, but I recall Hyde saying how hard those losing seasons were and he wasn’t sure how much more he could take. That aside, I am as addicted as Roy and a lot of us hear who love the game and the Birds in particular.

      Not a ton of relievers in the Hall of Fame.   KRod at 437 saves has gotten 10.8% and 7.8% of the votes in his first two tries; Lee Smith at 478 saves got into the HOF only through selection by the Today’s Game Era Committee.   I’d say the odds are against Kimbrel being elected by the writers unless he ends up somewhere north of 500 saves, and even then he’d be no sure thing.    Pretty good shot that Kimbrel passes KRod this year and finishes the season 4th or 5th on the all time saves list, depending what Kenley Jensen (one ahead of him) does the rest of the year.

      No doubt. As I was about to settle into bed last night to wait for the Os game to start (west coast start time, after all) my wife came in and casually said "Os won, that's good" as she was putzing around the room. Not knowing it was a day game and it had been played hours ago my first reaction was "damnit, what?!" instead of "oh cool".   Addict.

      This is spot on. You make the offer if there is need and he projects as worth that amount within the context of what else you play to do financially. Does he fit into your total budget plan if he accepts? If he's still here in September, we will have a better feel for the situation.
