Jeter broke a pact; no more all-star selections for him, please

Derek Jeter didn't deserve to be on this year's all star team, but the fans voted him in anyway. Why? Because he's a Hall of Famer and they wanted to see him play. It would have been especially appropriate for the fans to have a chance to give him an ovation on national television to acknowledge his recent milestone.

So how does he thank the fans? By skipping the game, saying he is "emotionally exhuasted."

OK, Derek, you want to skip the game? I guess that is your right. But if the fans vote you to the all star game next year, they should be ashamed of themselves. You broke a pact with your fans, and I hope you pay the consequence.

For what it's worth, I think "emotionally exhausted" is a known code word for "herpes flare-up".

I truly do not get all the anger about players skipping the AS game. I would *never* play in one. Why? Because winning is more important to me, and recharging or resting is more important than playing in this game (especially if I was a pitcher). Playing in the AS game can only hurt regular season performance, not add to it.

I'm sure all those years in his prime playing all those playoff games is finally taking it's toll. Maybe if he didn't play all those November games, he would have the strength to play a few more seasons.

John Kruk suggested that even the unhealthy players should show up. Wave, sign balls, etc. I think I agree with that. If you're healthy enough to travel with your team, you should be at the game if you're voted in.

He is an all time great and depending on how skewed you're views are he is either the 2nd or 3rd all time SS or at the very worst a top 5 all time SS. Hes coming off an injury, his team is neck and neck in a battle for 1st place, and this is the All Star BREAK. I do not blame him at all. He should probably show up, but if he doesn't oh well. And as long as he is who the fans want to see on the field the second week of July, the he should be voted on until he retires.

Derek Jeter is reportedly being called out by Major League Baseball and a few fellow players for skipping Tuesday's All-Star Game festivities in Phoenix.

The New York Yankees shortstop will not be attending because of "emotional and physical exhaustion" from his pursuit of 3,000 hits, according to a Foxsports.com report.

But an anonymous major league official told the New York Daily News that baseball wanted to celebrate Jeter's accomplishment and isn't happy he's not there. "Derek Jeter has done everything right during his whole career," the official said, according to the newspaper. "He was wrong on this one."

Baseball would have been fine with Jeter appearing on the field for player introductions, tipping his cap and then heading back to New York, the official told the newspaper. "This could have been a celebration of his 3,000th hit," the official said. "He didn't have to play."

MLB has the ASG set up and promoted as "Fans vote in the All Stars." So basically Jeter is telling the fans "F You, I don't care what you think." That's why the reaction is what it is. Personally, I'm glad he and Rivera and Tex and ARoid and all the rest of the jackrabbits aren't there.

I was hoping that Hardy would get Jeter's spot, but I guess I forgot about the rule that only one Oriole can attend the game.

And to go back to my OP, my main point is that, if he finds it inconvenient to show up for a game in which the fans voted him in, then I hope they don't vote him in again.

Now, I wasn't necessarily directing it at you. But you know that the majority of the fans who disapprove of the move won't do it because they have thought out a reason like you have. I should have prefaced that, I was more piggybacking off your OP.

To be fair, I think it's only a "break" if the fans didn't select you to play. Otherwise it's a "game".
