ESPN INSIDER is suggesting that Rasmus is available and will be used as trade bait to get a starter, The article states "Back of The Rotation". I know the sentiment here is to keep Guthrie ...But could you really turn down Rasmus?

A team that has used the disabled list 15 times this season is willing to deal, and the trade bait might include the enigmatic Colby Rasmus, reports Joe Strauss of the Post-Dispatch.

Over the next three weeks the Cardinals hope to move aggressively to acquire a pitcher to bolster the back end of its starting rotation or to give the bullpen a jolt. The main bargaining chip could be the previously unavailable Rasmus, who is closing in on arbitration and has shown erratic development as a center fielder. But even with his stock down slightly, Rasmus (.264 BA) could still bring back solid value.

I think I just heard yesterday that the Rays might be after Rasmus.

Yeah, would be a perfect addition. Him in CF, sliding Jones to LF would be great. I can't imagine a package the O's would willingly put together that could acquire him.

Say you started with Guthrie, Johnson.... excluding Machado, Schoop, Markakis, Jones, Wieters, Matusz, Britton, and Arrieta... put together a package you would accept if you were the Cardinals. If you are St. Louis would you take Guthrie, Johnson.. +2 of any out of B.Bundy, Bridwell, Hoes, Berry, Townsend, Avery, & Mahoney?

Just hard for me to imagine they would.

I know Colby is a good, young player... but wouldn't that be too much for him?

A pitcher who is a FA after '12, a power reliever, and two okay prospects for a cheap everyday player? No, I don't think so. He has pop, has a good glove... and would be under team control cheaply for years. He is the perfect addition.

Bundy and Bridwell are not just ok prospects.

This stinks of the Justin Upton trade talks from last year.

The Cards aren't going to give up Rasmus without Machado or Dylan Bundy (when elligible) in return. It doesn't make sense for either team.

The much more likely scenario is the Cards trading Rasmus for a marquee win-now player, such as James Shields, which would make sense for both Tampa Bay and the Cardinals. Guthrie does not qualify.
