So it seems the deadline is starting to heat up.

This is a great opportunity to clear Markakis' salary off the books IMO.

Is Markakis' salary really an albatross? Between his defensive improvements, his hot streak, and the league-wide damper on offense, his WAR right in line with his salary at the moment.

Yep...Its dumb to trade Nick and its even dumber to advocate an extension to a worse player, Jones, but want to give up Markakis just to get rid of his contract.

The lack of consistency is both poor and mind boggling.

If Markakis' salary is a big deal, explain how we improve without spending money.. with no minor league prospects on the near horizon and 14 semi-drought years filling needs with quality replacements?

I'd prefer not to see Pie play every day, and I have low confidence in MacPhail getting anything in return. Lets stop saving money... for no good reason.

Is it worth paying a sub 3.0 fWAR player an average of $14 million per season for the next three years when he's likely hit his peak?

I'd rather give that money to a difference maker.

Spending money on non-premium guys is the problem this franchise has and Markakis just doesn't bring enough to the table to justify his salary IMO. His defense has declined with his bat and he's not a leader in the clubhouse. He's a complementary piece but not somebody you build around.

How about we deal Markakis, let Reimold play RF (his natural position) and sign Beltran to a 1 year deal to play LF?

Beltran will likely outproduce Markakis next season, and likely both will cost about the same.

It's just an example.

I mostly agree with this.
