AM: Teams had legit interest in Hardy

Looks like MacPhail has somehow succeeded in the wrong direction. I love the extension but would have loved a trade in a very strong market more by orders of magnitude. Keeping Hardy was another wrong decision in a growing portfolio of them.

See, he could have even waited to give him an extension for a few weeks. Just to see what teams will want a shortstop and see what they have to offer later in the month at the deadline. A boatload of trades are going to happen over the next 2 weeks.

What ever happened to letting the market percolate?

Only Orioles fans could take signing one of the best all-around shortstops in the league and turn it into a complete negative. Not only that, but use it as additional evidence against the GM.

I understand the reasons for trading him, and I think discussing what could have been brought back (in theory now, more realistically then) is a valid debate. Seriously though? Sometimes keeping quality players is a GOOD move. Especially since not everyone believes that this team is twelve pitchers and eight hitters from contention.

I think it's interesting how quickly the tide has apparently turned on here regarding trading vs extending Hardy. I guess just some change of hearts?

I favored trading Hardy awhile ago, but also didn't think extending him was some awful option.

And though you have no idea of the players who were being offered, you feel it doesn't make sense. : rolleyes

Yep....Because he obviously wasn't going to be dealt for less value than 2 draft picks. Just use some common sense there and you arrive at the obvious conclusion.

For AM to say other teams had legit interest in Hardy says a lot IMO. He could have easily said that there was interest but not enough to justify trading him.

I just don't see many ways for this team to obtain the talent they need to contend...Trading Hardy potentially was a way to do that.

Its just not going to happen unless they are dealing Jones...which ain't happening.

Just like the BRob deal...If healthy, this extension should be worth it. Its not a terrible contract by any means. But that doesn't mean it was the best move for what is needed for this organization.

I've read where several teams (Reds, Padres, etc...) have recently said they are very reluctant to trade young talent for two month rentals but are more willing to discuss trading prospects for players who have two or three year contracts. I still don't see where signing him to this extension lessens his value.

I generally agree with you. I just don't get why the change of heart.

How many times on this board have people said "I'd trade players X and Y for player Z but I'd want a window to sign him to an extension or no trade. How does Hardy on a reasonable 3 year contract worth less than Hardy on a two month contract?
