The Coffey's getting hotter

Cameron Coffey, I mean. Today he had his third consecutive start, allowing 2 ER in 5 innings. Over the three starts, he has allowed 3 runs, 11 hits and 2 walks in 15 innings, and his overall ERA for July is 2.04. Maybe we're starting to see why Tony had him in the OH top 10 in the Fall of 2009.

Despite missing a lot of time with injuries, Coffey is only 20 years old. Maybe he makes the jump to Delmarva next spring if he can finish this campaign strong?

:laughlol: Gotta love the Frobby puns. Good stuff.

I've also noticed Coffey's recent stretch. Its good to see him healthy and at least getting his innings. Hopefully he sets himself up to leap back into the prospect picture next year.

How's his velocity looking?

From what I heard it's still in the mid to high 80's with an occasional low 90s. It's been a long road for the young man and the good news is without his velocity, he's had to learn how to pitch. The hope is that with a full year to get stronger that his velocity will return in 2012. If it does, you now have a young lefty throwing in the low 90s who knows a thing or two about how to pitch. He could be a real sleeper in 2012. Remember, next year would have been his junior year in college when he would have been draft eligible so even if he starts the year at Aberdeen he's about on track.

The key for him now is to stay healthy and to continue to regain arm strength.

Great that Coffey is progressing. Terrible that in order to get excited about this system fans have to dig down to a recovering arm in short season ball throwing in the mid- to upper-80s.

Huh? I don't even understand this comment at all. What's it purpose? I know you know there are more good stories in the system then just this and honestly, what's the harm in following this kids attempt to comeback? Machado, Schoop, Drake and Bundy's development are all at Single-A (Double-A for Drake now) and there are ahost of good things going on at Aberdeen (Davis, Bridwell, Sawyer, etc) and GCL (Rodriguez, Vader, etc). I guess I don't see why you needed to use hyperbole in this thread?

And he throws with his left arm. Always worth a few mph

Well, I'm the last person that needs to be told about Bundy or Drake. I liked Sawyer out of HS, as well. and considered Davis a top 20 kid entering the year. But these are all talent "types" that most orgs have knocking about. This wasn't a slam on Coffey at all.

I do think it's funny that I get hit with "hyperbole" patrol, but the opening post points to three good starts at short season, a one-month ERA (all achieved with average or below velo) and claims we are starting to see why he was considered a top 10 talent in the system.

As I said, it's great he's progressing. I know his pops posts here from time to time, and it seems like a really nice family and I hope things go very well for them. But Coffey would be an afterthought, as far as organizational planning is concerned, in a healthy and productive system. I don't see a huge difference between Coffey and, say, Madison Younginer. Both are long shots right now, but have shown some flashes and reasons to be hopeful.

First of all, as you well know, I'm not watching Coffey pitch, I'm looking at box scores. I wouldn't know if Coffey was pitching 99 mph or 82 mph.

Second, your characterization of what I said in the OP is absurd. I didn't "claim" anything. I said "[m]aybe we're starting to see why Tony had him in the OH top 10 in the Fall of 2009." That is far from a claim; it's a hope. It's a tiny ray of light after Coffey has been in a long, dark tunnel for 1.5 years. That is all, and I didn't make it out to be anything more than it is.

Finally, I probably would have posted this even if the Orioles had 10 other starters excelling in the minors right now. This was a guy who the Orioles paid overslot to get and who Tony wrote up nicely two years ago, so he's someone I'm aware of, moreso than many other pitchers in our system.

To me, your post was pretty snarky under the circumstances.

    • That is exactly my roster math as well. And that breaks down to just one vacant bullpen slot (with two starters).  I'm not sure we even have room for a high leverage reliever. You have seven guys on your list and they are all out of options or high leverage guys that shouldn't be optioned. We should have one spot for optionable guys and ideally another for waiver claims. The only way Suarez makes sense if he is super cheap so we can DFA without a second thought. But he will cost more this year.
    • Wah! But muh defense.    He still put up 7.9 bWAR this year. I would gladly pay 40 million a year to have what Ohtani did this year without the promise of picthing again
    • I think at $5 million he's an insurance policy that can go to the pen if need be. I'd rather not go into spring training with him penciled into the rotation. But I also don't want Trevor Rogers penciled in either.  He also could be a bridge until Bradish is ready.
    • So to all of you saying you would bring him back…. GRod, Eflin, Kremer, Felix, DC, Webb, Soto, Dominguez, Akin and Cano That leaves room for 3 more pitchers and this doesn’t include McDermott, Rogers or Povich. 3 spots left, 1 high end reliever and 2 starters. Which of those 3 spots do you want him at or, who do you take off the above list and keep Suarez over?
    • I went to a few games this year, but here are the reasons I didn't go to the WC games: The team had been an absolute bummer to watch for 3 entire months out of the season and to be honest by the time the playoffs got here I was exhausted and annoyed. The brand of baseball they had been employing for half the season (over-reliance on the home run, terrible ABs, iffy defense) frankly sucked to watch, even on TV, and I'm already spending money to watch them on TV. I wanted them to prove they could get past the WC round before I shelled out more money. I imagine a lot of people share these reasons with me.
    • People whining about 41k attendance and blaming it on the city have no idea what they're talking about.  Why were there 47k+ of Game 1 against the Rangers last year? Did the city all of a sudden not matter then? It was also a day game. Alas, it was on a Saturday. And they had that locked up for awhile. Why has attendance went up YoY? Look at the Astros and the Brewers. They had *less* people at their G1 games. Is Milwaukee not a nice city? Is Houston not a nice city?  This is pretty simple. It was a day game during a weekday with crappy weather coming off a pretty lackluster performance going into the playoffs. And folks didn't know if there'd even be a home game until, what, barely a week before?  People like winners. Miami is an awesome city. They got a new stadium when it first opened. But guess what? That team stunk in fairly short order upon stadium opening and attendance tanked.
    • Would love to bring him back on a 1 year deal for anywhere from $3-$7m.  Great depth arm. Don't pencil him into the 5th starter role. This club needs to pickup two starters: a TOR arm and a BOR arm. Have an open competition for the 5th spot. If Suarez doesn't make it, he'd be a great middle reliever arm. Open competition between Free Agent, Suarez, Povich, McDermott, and Rogers. Do not just go into 2025 penciling Rogers into any role.
