We should release Pie

Is there any reason to hold on to Felix Pie at this point? His OPS is .517. He has no homers and just 6 walks in 155 PA. Most say his defense is good - I don't agree. He takes bad angles and boots plenty of balls in LF and CF. He doesn't steal bases that well. He doesn't run the bases that well.

At this point, I say release him and bring up Angle. At least Angle has shown that he can get on base, steal a ton at good percentages, and play solid defense in CF. He's 25, time to let him sink or swim. And if he sinks, at least he has options.

I am VERY interested in seeing how this thread goes. I am on the record as never being a fan of Pie, so I will refrain from my normal rant about him. But I am very curious to see how his supporters will answer your first paragraph above, because I agree with you on everything you said. He offers NOTHING to this team, other than chasing down the helmet when we win our one or two games a week!

As much as I wanted Pie to succeed, I think his time here is likely coming to an end.

I would really like to see a Pie/Reimold straight platoon in LF for the remainder of the season. Reimold looks awful against RHP, and his role in the Majors may be that of a role player.

My only rebuttal is that I love the guy. He cracks me up. Even before the chasing the helmet thread he cracked me up, now even more so.

But you're right, he's not bring much to the team at this point. I think a change of scenery might do him well - I'm sure some team will be willing to take him on as a reclamation project of sorts.

Everything that this team seems to want Pie to do, Angle probably does better.

Yes, from watching him this season I get the sense that he is really below average at everything. He is not hitting well, running the bases well, fielding well. He doesn't draw any walks. A couple years ago I thought that trading Jones and using Pie as the center fielder was worth considering, but whether Pie could have ever developed into a serviceable player with regular playing time will probably never be known. As a fourth outfielder, he's done a very poor job this season and I'd rather see Angle on the roster.

.

Overall, I have been a huge Pie fan (FELIX THE CAT). He has been really bad lately, though. I wouldn't be opposed to either choice. A) Let him finish the season here as our 4th outfielder. If we do that, I believe that there is a pretty good chance that he'll eventually break out of it (at least modestly break out of it, if not necessarily go on a tear). I also can see the desire to: B) Simply cut him and bring up either Matt Angle or Kyle Hudson (probably Angle, since Hudson started the season at Advanced-A Frederick, and moved up 2 classes through AA-Bowie and up to AAA-Norfolk already during the season, and Angle has been in AAA-Norfolk for almost 2 full years now). It's a toss-up, and I wouldn't be opposed to either choice.

Why don't we just hold on to him till the end of spring training next year and try to get him past waivers? We then could send him down to Norfolk where he could play everyday.

Right now if we released him some horrible team other than us would pick him up. At the end of spring next year it would be much harder for them.

Why? As awful as you say Reimold has been against righties, his line is still way better then Pies. Against righties Reimold .206/.299/.353/.652 Pie .235/.263/.288/.551

I don't care if Pie remains on this team for the rest of the year, however, he should get little or no starts.

Pie is absolutely hilarious and, with his recent comments, has probably become my favorite bad Oriole of all time. I always rooted for the guy and wanted him to succeed.

However, if you care about making your baseball team better, it's time to let him go. His WAR is currently sitting at -2.0. He's the worst player in baseball with a minimum of 150 plate appearances. I really can't see how Matt Angle could do any worse.

Trade him to the Ravens. All he does is score touchdowns.
