SI's Jon Heyman on the O's front office situation

Showalter was Angelos’ choice last year, though MacPhail appeared to be leaning toward current Mariners manager Eric Wedge.

Cal Ripken Jr. doesn’t appear to have interest in becoming a general manager and people close to the longtime Orioles shortstop say they can’t see him working under Angelos as a GM.

It’s hard to imagine Rangers executive John Hart agreeing to work under Angelos, unless he gets real autonomy.

Angelos wouldn’t like the idea of hiring a Yankee to turn his franchise around and it appears unlikely that Brian Cashman would leave New York for Baltimore.

Rangers assistant GM Thad Levine, who grew up rooting for the Orioles, figures to be a candidate for the job.

But among the most qualified GM candidates, it's questionable whether anyone would take the O's job. According to one talent evaluator, "They are fifth in talent in their division in the majors, and fifth in the minors, too.'' The bigger issue, though, may be Angelos, whose reputation for over-involvement seems to be discouraging the most obvious name candidates.

That about sums up the past 14 years.

Oh!! Oh!!! OHHH!!!! I thought Cashman wanted to come here!?!?!?! I wonder how this will be spun.

Speculation at best as no sources are listed.

Buck Showalter is a former Yankee and we have no idea about Cashman leaving NY for Baltimore.

Still the comments that Cashman made about Showalter lead me to believe that match may not happen, but that's better proof than just pure conjecture about Angelos hating all things Yankees.

John Hart is still the best bet IMO because I think Angelos will give him the autonomy if Buck wants him to be GM.

Do you not get it? How many things do you need to read that tell you that PA is the problem?

You can not be this dense.

BTW, Levine is 1000x a better candidate than Hart is.

To add, I believe the mentioning of Cashman's name is pure speculation as well.

Adding: PA won't give anyone autonomy.

I am betting that Angelos actually thinks that AM has autonomy. I think that keeping control of things is so ingrained into him that he doesn't realize he is still actively holding his GM back.

I do not believe that any GM is going to have more autonomy than what MacPhail had. That doesn't mean that a new GM can't be more successful in getting Angelos on board with certain things that need to be done.

I want to add that we don't know very much about how much Angelos interfered in or limited what MacPhail wanted to do. MacPhail has been an extremely loyal employee in terms of how he has held out his relationship with Angelos to the public. He has always credited Angelos for making money available when he wanted to spend money on something, and has never said anything in public to hint that Angelos reigned him in, went around his back, or anything of the sort. I suspect that Angelos did in fact limit MacPhail or interfere in certain ways, but nobody really knows that for sure.

Then why doesn't anyone want the job? Since PA apparently hands out autonomy like Halloween candy. Right? How can so many people write the same thing about out beloved owner? But, it's all Andy's fault!!! even the decade of losing before him. It's still his fault!:laughlol:
