Danny O' Brien Appreciation Thread

Recommended Posts

I never could have fathomed this happening in the sophomore year for the reigning ACC Rookie of the Year, but here we are. Edsall and Crowton are poor enough coaches that they apparently can't exploit DOB's talents, and have to resort to a QB who brings nothing to the table other than the ability to run fast. I hope Danny puts in for a transfer as soon as the season is over and goes on to have great success, both in college and post-college. I'm sure at the very least James Franklin would be thrilled to have him for his senior season. He deserves better than this.

Wouldn't he have to sit out a year if he goes to a BCS school? He could always go to an FBS school and not sit out a year.

He would have to sit out a year at any FBS school. He could go to an FCS school and play next season though. But he would have one year of eligibility if he did go to an FBS school. Vandy just makes a lot of sense.

Clemson figured out CJ by the 2nd half tonight. That won't stop Edsall and Crowton from being hard-headed enough to keep their best passer on the bench though. I have nothing at all against Brown personally, and if he played at Oklahoma for Barry Switzer in the 70's he might win a Heisman. But he's not the sort of QB you can win with in the 21st century. But Edsall will keep playing him just to prove he's smarter than the rest of us, winning be damned. The only way Danny plays again is due to injury.

BTW: the Ducks are in quite a fight tonight, eh? And Darron Thomas is out for the game it seems.

Yeah Brown is gimicky right now. Granted, gimicks can be pretty successful in college football but he has zero accuracy on anything over 15 yards. Teams will just load up the box and force Brown and the Wrs to make mid to long throws. You saw Clemson adjust and start to slow us down tonight mid way through the 3rd Q. O' Brien is the best QB we have but the system isn't fit for him and the WRs suck so I don;t know. I'd like to think the best QB will find his way back into the mix but with this system and coaching staff I'm not betting on it happening.

As far as the Ducks, Bennett is faster than White Castle through the digestive system....lol. He appears to be filling in quite well for Thomas. BTW: the Ducks play at a totally different speed than Clemson or the Terps.

I like DOB too but I'm also a fan of the dual threat QB. Here's what I don't get. DOB did fine w/Crowton's offense vs. Miami. What the heck happened the next few games?

Actually, other than the 1st half of the Miami game and the 2nd half of the WVU game (with a bad INT thrown in each game) DOB hasn't looked good at all. And I refuse to believe that he all of a sudden went from Rookie of the Year to a backup all by himself. Crowton's offense seems like it just isn't suited for any kind of QB. I'm not sure he could have won with Cam Newton last season. That sound you hear coming from the south is LSU fans laughing at us.*

*For OregonBird and I the LSU laughter is drowned out by laughter coming from down I-5 in Eugene, OR, where Crowton coached before going to LSU.

And it's so painfully obvious that Oregon's coaches are a thousand-times better than Maryland's are...and that goes back to the Friedgen era too. The Ducks could put their 4th-string QB in the game an barely miss a beat.

Not to defend MD's coaching (they suck), but Oregon's 4th string is probably more talented that UMD's first.

But as an addendum to that. Look, the offense posted 38 points against the number 8 team in the country. In the grand scheme of things, offense wasn't the problem last night. If you score 45 points in a game you should win. Period. As maligned as Crowton has been this year, he got his unit to perform with excellent results. Outside the inexcusable burying of DJ Adams, which even players don't seem to understand or agree with, the offense was fine last night. It may not always be the case this year, but yesterday the offense performed as well as it has all season. I have no qualms with the offense.

And credit to DOB for being a great team player and doing what he could with the head phones on.

Lyndon Johnson may be the worst special teams coach ever. He's appallingly awful. I'm sure if you polled the staff though, many of these coaches would boast about how they helped invent the sport of football. A collection of ineptitude that does less with more. Many of the coaches hinder this team's ability to win.
