Wells for Napoli and Rivera - one of the worst trades ever?

It's been a year, and that trade still boggles my mind. Wells had 4 years, $89.2 mm coming to him. The Jays paid $5 mm of it. That still leaves an $84.2 mm obligation to Wells, at ages 32-35. OK, now one year is over, Wells had a -0.3 rWAR this year. Just 3 years, $63 mm to go.

Meanwhile, Napoli, who was traded again to the Rangers for Frankie Francisco and cash, just had a 5.5 rWAR season at a cost of $5.8 mm. He has a year to go before free agency. Rivera was worth 0.7 rWAR at a cost of $5.25 mm. He was traded to the Dodgers at mid-season in a salary dump and is a free agent now.

It's no wonder Tony Reagins is gone.

Horrible trade both at the time and with hindsight.

Regarding the last comment, it is generally assumed that Scioscia is the real decision maker there and wanted this deal made.

To be fair, looking at their respective seasons prior to the trade, it didn't look like it would be this bad. However, it would be one of the worst regardless of this season. Reagins made some good trades while he was there, Saunders for Harren cames to mind, but yeah, with this trade he pushed himself out of the door.

Generally assumed by who? Speculative fans?

No. By some people in the know. I've read some stuff, but I'm not going to search for it. Keith Law may have said something about it recently on Twitter. I don't recall if his was definitely him though.

I don't want to sound like El Gordo here but how can one be "in the know" if they are generally assuming? No doubt Scioscia has a lot more influence than most managers but I don't thing he is sitting there making trades. He probably did want Napoli gone, but, as manager, that is his choice. He probably gave his stamp of approval to the trade, but it was Reagins' responsibility.

The first line does not warrant a response. You can think what you like regarding his level of involvement, I am just passing on what I have read.

Oh, okay.

I've always found it odd when someone makes a strong statement then gets defensive when someone tries to talk to them about it.

Have yourself a nice day.

I find it funny that you are saying that about a comment that wasn't even a strong statement.

I'm also not sure how that was defensive. Defensive to a weird first line of yours I suppose, but not defensive to the point, and it's not exactly like I lashed out at you. I don't care what you believe and I don't care if Reagins did really have more power than Sciosca, I am simply passing along info I have read. That's all.
