A little more about Gregory Halman:

Listed by Baseball America as the Mariners' top prospect back in 2009... was known for lots of raw talent and athleticism, performances after being called up in 2011 were inconsistent, but showed promise, was part of the Dutch national baseball team, played outfield.

This September 2011 ESPN article on baseball in Europe has a few paragraphs on Halman, who "wanted to be the first European baseball superstar" and "hoped to inspire youth in Europe for baseball".

This actually hits fairly close to home for the O's. Adam Jones and Rick VandenHurk were both with him the past few weeks on their European "tour," according to Britt.

I exchanged emails with Orioles pitcher Rick VandenHurk -- who just toured Europe with Halman -- and he was still in shock, writing that he was at a "complete loss for words." O's outfielder Adam Jones -- who came up through the Seattle system and was on the European big league tour -- took to Twitter early this morning to express his sympathies as well.

More about his history and reactions from around the league here.
