Part of me says no way in hell. Now each of them will have another great pitcher. The other part of me says if we could rape the Red Sox system, go for it.

Ellsbury and Buchholz are a must IMO. But that wouldn't be enough. I think they need to add Pedroia to that deal. I'm sorry, but if we're trading in the division, we're getting a king's ransom back (we should be getting one anyway). But my asking price would be Ellsbury, Pedroia, and Buchholz.

.

No offense intended but this is not going to happen unless all three are injured playing wiffleball in a backyard in Rhode Island.

I would think a Crisp, Lowrie and Masterson might be a good trade for both teams as you would be getting a cheap, fast, defensive outfielder; a replacement for Miggy and a very good to excellent pitching prospect. They would also be cheap for quite a while which would placate PA.

That is much closer value than Ellsbury, Pedroia and Bucholz.

The Red Sox are not going to give away the farm when they are already the best team in MLB.

There is sentiment that Santanna has peaked. There is also sentiment that most pitchers peak by 30. Therefore both Santanna and Bedard may become bad long-term investments. Beane seems to have a rather successful formula of trading ---at the worst, a year too early or just right. I'm sure he regrets not pulling the triger on Harden and he is looking at dealing Blanton and Haren now----wonder why?

He got a kings ransom for Hudson and Mulder and refused to go strong after Zito (remember how many here salivated over Zito).

RAKE IN THE BIG HAUL FOR BEDARD NOW.

Woah now, we aren't getting Pedrioa, and where woudl he play for us anyway?

I would like to get Lester somehow, don't see how though.

If we aren't getting Pedroia, then they aren't getting Bedard. And if we are in total re-build mode and we acquire a 2B, then I would imagine Roberts would be as good as gone. If you got Ellsbury and Pedroia and then you spin Roberts for Milledge and a pitcher, you got your OF set for the next 10 years.

Here's another proposal. How about Ellsbury and Pedroia for Bedard? Do the Red Sox do it? Do the O's. Just in my personal opinion, I don't do that - I don't think its enough.

Again, the Mets re-signed Luis Castiilo to play second base for the next four years. They have no use for Roberts.

More garbage packages from you for Bedard?

Give me a break.

Lester or Buchholz, Ellsbury and Anderson is the type of deal that it would take.

I posted earlier that Bedards price automatically goes up if dealing in the division....do you think there's any truth to that?

I think it almost has to but you still have to be reasonable.

One thing is for sure, you need to take from them guys who are likely to be big parts of their future.

You can't trade them Bedard and take back a guy that they are dying to trade...Coco Crisp.

It should, but I don't think the Red Sox would be willing to pay it.

Think about the Erik Bedard we know and love being picked apart 24-7 by the Boston media. It doesn't strike me as a good match and -when you add in the health/durability concerns- I bet the Red Sox think they're better off with Buchholz, Lester, Ellsbury et al.

Considering Boston led the AL in ERA in 2007, I doubt they're feeling enough desperation to mortgage their future.

I agree but they are talking about Santana.

Personally, i think the Red Sox would be foolish to part with a bunch of their top young guys for anyone at this point...The only guy I felt it would be ok with was MCab because they could sign him long term and he is very young.

Other than that, they should stay the course and if they need a good starter, their will probably be a lot available at the deadline, assuming some of the rumored guys aren't dealt this offseason.

Yeah, I thought the price for Bedard would have to go up if we're dealing with the Sox...But they just won the WS and Ellsbury played a big part in that. Bucholz no hit us and they shut him down for the playoffs so it says to me that they view him as a significant part of their future. IMO, Pedroia is pretty untouchable, definitely unreasonable.

The Sox intrigue me, but there seems to be a fine line with unreasonable/reasonable.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is that they won a title this year and their youth played a big part in that....I think they're going to be way reluctant to deal any of it.

Boom Boom brings up a good point, their pitching is already pretty filthy...Bedard seems like a luxury at this point, but then again there's the old addage that you can never have enough pitching....

Intriguing, indeed.

    • I would add that Mountcastle and Urias were also losses to the offense.  Throw in a couple of slumps to our other regulars, creating 4-5 weak spots in the offense, and that's a lot to overcome.  I don't discount the mental part of hitting, but I do think most of our problems are directly linked to the rash of injuries we've suffered.
    • Just my opinion. ZiPS projects him for a .708 OPS next year and I'd bet on the under. I think he's a .230/.295/.395 hitter with a below average glove. A Rio Ruiz type of player.
    • We have to keep Irvin "pumped up."  When he's "deflated" he's just no good.  🤣
    • There just seems to be some sort of disconnect between upper management, coaching and the players right now. Do I know that for sure? Obviously no. But with the dropoff we've seen in offensive production something is off here. They literally have been mediocre since the All Star break. And the only big loss on the offensive side is Westburg.
    • There are no answers, only Zuul. But seriously, I think the issue at play here is we look at the body of work of guys like Eloy, Slater, O'Hearn, Rivera, and (to a lesser extent) Soto, you see where the holes are. I get that O'Hearn was thrust into 1B near FT due to the Mountcastle injury, but that didn't explain Hyde from playing O'Hearn in the OF when he is one of the worst defensive OFers on this team. Right now, this team is very much ailing. Ramon coming back will definitely help spell the need for O'Hearn to be a 1B by maybe letting Rivera play over there.  We need to get back to a point where O'Hearn is only hitting against righties and is playing sparingly in the field. Eloy is a liability at this point. I was a proponent of seeing what mechanical tweaks they could make similar to what they did w/ Hicks (and even O'Hearn!) and they did catch lightning in a bottle maybe due to excitement/adrenaline and BABIP being unsustainably high, but right now his flyballs aren't carrying and his groundballs aren't finding holes, so there's probably a reason why Chicago is saying, "Haha, told you so!" This team is in freefall offensively, at this point...just give the ABs to Mayo. You can't simultaneously say, "He needs to make adjustments!" and then let him have 5 ABs over 5 games. That isn't a way to grow a player. Not everybody can be a part time player and be effective off the bench/sparingly. Kjerstad has shown an ability to hit lefties in the minors as well as in the majors (albeit in very limited time, he his 4 for 10 against them). Let the kid play. Slater has fallen off a cliff, but at least he's a solid defensive OFer I get it, nobody is going to solve the offensive woes of this team when it comes to the rookies/young guys. Mayo, Holliday, Kjerstad, even Cowser...they're all still adjusting. The change needs to come from the main stays. Now, Adley is starting to hit, Gunnar is back on a hitting binge, but this lineup desperately needs some consistent production from Tony to go along with it because right now way too much pressure is being put on the bottom of the lineup and the young guys. And I'm not convinced Westy solves any of those issues as wrist injuries are a beast to bounceback from quickly.
    • I get the desire to poo-poo analytics and advanced data, etc.  It does get obnoxious hearing about statcast pages in red when guys aren't hitting well.   But more obnoxious are cries of "the old eye test" and "old school" and the other various "yelling at cloud" types of arguments.  If everyone was stuck with the way things were done back in the day, we'd never progress and never advance in any area of life or society.  That includes how we look at and discuss baseball.
    • If the above is true, how do you get a team to deliver timely hits, stop pressing, and quite expecting to lose?
