If Santana goes to the Yankee$...

I just read an article on SI.com about the Yankees and Red Sox engaging in talks about a Santana trade. The article posits that the Twins are asking for two of Hughes, Chamberlain and Kennedy, in addition to Melky Cabrera. It also stats that they asked about Bulchoz and Lester in addition to Ellsbury. My questions are for those who know much more than I do. Does this situation offer an opportunity to AM to offer Bedard for slightly less? Would either the Yankees or Red Sox be interested? Would the team that is unsuccessful in acquiring Santana be interested more therefore? Also, what would be a reasonable return? I favor Ellsbury over Cabrera, but the what of the starting pitchers?

Most recently the Red Sox have expressed little interest in Santana. So right now the Yankees are the frontrunner. But the Yankees have repeatedly said that they will not deal Chamberlain. And the Red Sox have said that they will decline any offer that involves them dealing Ellsbury. And they're probably more interested in keeping Lester. But the whole Santana deal has little to no effect on the Bedard situation.

So if we wait for the Dodgers to get Mcab, and they do, then we have lost our best outlet to trade Bedard. If Mcab goes to the Angles, then we are still in good shape.

Id still like to work it out now, because, as you know things never fall our way.

It's pointless to talk about this in the abstract. Lets suppose the Dodgers are witholding the players they would have to trade in order to get MCab. Kemp Kershaw and LaRoche. They are offering Ethier, Hu and Broxton for Bedard. Should we do the deal now or wait to see what happens to MCab? That's probably something like what is actually going down presently, IMO.

If that's what's being offered, I don't blame us for waiting. I like Ethier, Hu and Broxton, but if I'm trading Bedard, I need either Kemp OR Kershaw included in the package.

Isn't all of this trade talk "in the abstract"? That's what these boards are all about.
We are speaking about weither to wait or go for whatever the Dodgers are offering now. Since we don't have any idea what's on the table how could you ppossibly have an opinion on weither it is enough for Bedard?:rolleyes::rolleyes:

    • It's a good thing Irvin only cost the Orioles this guy: I was pretty skeptical of Hernaiz being anything more than a utility guy and had no issues with moving him for a guy who could potentially help in the rotation. This problem with Irvin is he went from this guy in 2023: to this guy in 2024: Don't worry though, we could lose Irvin because we have this guy in AAA who we gave up Norby and Stowers for:
    • I am "old school" and I don't disagree, but it also doesn't have to be either/or in my opinion. I would substitue the word "tiring" for "obnoxious" above. 😀 I admittedly don't understand all the data and look at some of it in bewilderment. You can teach old dogs new tricks but it takes longer. I'm trying to learn and follow but still hang on to what I know best. (My smart phone ain't real smart either!!!!!) I suspect I may not be alone in the realm of Oriole fandom.
    • I agree.  But I also think batting Kjerstad fourth was inane.  He's a rookie and he's just coming off the DL.  Put him lower in the lineup.
    • I guess we'll find out over the offseason.  The danger is that Elias looks at Eflin, Grayson, Suarez and Kramer as a solid 1-4, assumes that Povich, McDermott and Rogers can battle it out for the fifth slot, and then decides we don't need to try to get a front line starter to replace Corbin Burnes.
    • The offense looked bad the day we almost got no-hit. It honestly looked okay yesterday. Adley smashed the ball leading off the 2nd into a lineout (Cowser doubled later in the inning). Santander smashed into a lineout in the 8th before Adley's HR. The Tigers basically out-homered us but we were getting baserunners on and taking better at-bats overall. The complaints about the lack of situational hitting/smallball are misguided IMO. A homer-heavy lineup can get the job done if the homers are hit. There are some slumps and some holes in the lineup (injury replacements for Westburg, Mountcastle, and Urias) who can't make up for the slumping players like they did early in the year.
    • The underlying metrics always suggested Norby was due for serious regression, but some people are just desperate not to give Elias credit because they need to be able to point to some single, solitary thing and say, "This is why we're underperforming!" and the guy running the show is the obvious target. I think Norby and Stowers have value as major leaguers, but long-term I don't think they're guys we're going to miss. Entirely possible Trevor Rogers is someone forgettable as well. I guess sometimes both teams lose trades.
