I think it was satirical and not emoticoned

I study--don't laugh--humor, and I'm pretty good at picking out jokes, but I didn't get that from his initial post. Now that I look at it again, I could see it, HOWEVER, it goes to show you how blurry the line has become between reality and parody because of the overreactions of some posters on this board. Truly, if it was in jest, then Srmeowmeow has captured, perfectly, the tone and emotion of a number of other posters.

4th OF with good defense, some speed who will be the O's best leadoff option (outside of Roberts)...sounds like a good depth move.

Terrible leadoff option. career .313 OBP and that is consistent with his last 4 seasons. He is bench depth and/or competition. Hope he is cheap.

He got 274 plate appearances with the AL champs hitting .301/.323/.426 for an OPS of .749 (95 OPS+), which is very good for someone who can steal, pinchrun, and play any of the OF positions, including CF, where we really needed a late-inning defensive replacement for Reimold and sub for the injury-prone Jones who isn't an automatic out. Chavez has played 469 of his 812 outfield games in CF.

Frankly, I was cringing at the thought of Angle or Hudson being the back-up CFer due to their weak offense.

Last year, he batted lead-off 7 times for the Rangers with an OBP of .355 (SSS, of course).

As for whether he was obtained with the idea of him being a long-term asset, I seriously doubt it, considering that he's 33 years old and speed is an important part of what he offers.

An improvement over Pie and Patterson.

Orioles signed OF Endy Chavez to a one-year contract.

"Terms have not yet been disclosed. It's a nice bargain signing by the O's. The 33-year-old batted .301/.323/.426 with five homers, 27 RBI, 10 stolen bases and a .749 OPS over 274 plate appearances with the Rangers this season while playing solid defense at all three outfield positions. Chavez will back up Nick Markakis, Adam Jones and Nolan Reimold."

Britt Ghiroli speculates that Endy Chavez will "likely be" in a platoon with Nolan Reimold in left field.

I don't see any reason to complain about this move. Or to laud it, either.

It reminds me of Boston, who just recently signing Nick Punto. They could have gone with Iglesias on the bench, but instead they decided on the sure thing.

UZR loves Chavez, therefore his fWAR is not at all embarrassing. 4.3 WAR over the last 4 seasons, in fact. As a replacement for Pie/Angle, it's definitely an upgrade.

Also, I imagine this contract has been on the table for a while. Duquette was clearly targeting Chavez from the get-go.

I think we were told otherwise.

Brit confirms:

Chavez’s deal is a Major League contract for one-year, confirmed a baseball source, and the expectation is the left-handed hitting Chavez will serve as a platoon in left field with Nolan Reimold. Chavez played 66 games in centerfield last season, giving executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette the necessary backup for Adam Jones.

    • He certainly isn't a bust but I wasn't happy with the pick at the time and I don't love using the second overall pick for that type of player profile. Westburg signed for slot so he's irrelevant but Mayo was a great use of the money saved.
    • Think Heston will be the next call up. Mayo’s K/BB ratio is poor and I think they’ll want to see that even out. Stowers and Norby have seen their numbers slip a bit.  It will likely take an injury to an outfielder or first baseman, but I think we see HK next.
    • I have to laugh at some of my pre-draft thoughts as well as others. I will say on behalf of myself and some others is that what we did not understand then was what the Orioles brain trust knew to be their model, and what they best developed. What traits they were looking for is an important thing to know, in hindsight anyway. And really, the Jackson Holliday leap in development was not something most of us heard anything about until about a month before the draft. I saw him the previous summer and I cannot say he was all that impressive, but it was only one look. His physicality took a big jump after that.  I will also add that we’re never going to know what would have happened if they drafted Austin Martin, Jones, Lawler, Lacy, etc. Their development could well have been different as O’s. The funny part of this board, in general, is the absolute certainty some have in their opinions and how eager they are to trash Elias and staff. There is plenty of humility to go around, now that things have played out. It’s fun to finally have a truly great front office and ownership group, and a stacked stable of horses.
    • How did the moustache work for Austin Hays?
    • Thanks for the kind words @HbgOsFan and thanks especially for reading them.
    • I just think it’s too soon to think about sending him down.  Two more weeks like this?  It definitely would be time.  But I’ll bet we don’t see two more weeks like this.
    • Heston hit an absolute bomb tonight. A couple of other hard hit balls from other guys that didn’t pay off. Norby threw a ball into the stands on a relay home.  Stowers lollygagged (that’s right lollygaggers!) a ground ball into shallow left center into a double for the Shrimp. That runner scored on a single to right.  Defense last night was half assed as well. Daniel Johnson had the best defensive play of the game tonight - hosed a guy at third on a fly ball to right.    Victor Mesa Jr. is legit.
