I fail to see how this is an affront to baseball, man, humanity in general, America, or anything else. In fact, after reading the comments here first, my reaction to the pictures was "that's it?"

I'm in line with NMS's opinion. Baseball is better off if 27 of the 30 stadiums don't look like that were designed by the same guy who designed OPACY, just changing a few subtle details by adding stuff ripped off from parks from 75 years ago. I like Skydome, just because it doesn't appear to be pandering to Bob Costas, Billy Crystal, and WP Kinsella.

You're in the vast minority. That place is a Grade-A dump.

Don't care. I thought we had a great opportunity when the 1960s cookie cutter stadiums were blown up, but half the stadiums in the league now look like they took the OPACY blueprints and spent 15 minutes photoshopping in retro-cool mallpark features.

Agreed. Baseball makes money off of the "event" of a baseball game -- not necessarily the game itself. Parks are going to continue to incorporate "other stuff" to do and see -- I'm all for organizations/cities finding their own twist on the baseball experience. I actually think the new Marlins stadium pics look very "South Beach". I think it's cool to see a city's flavor on a sports field/stadium.

Asking major-league baseball teams to be creative is like asking lemmings to take a shortcut.

I like the way baseball stadiums can capture or represent a city's personality. One of the most appealing things about pro baseball is that each playing location has a totally unique feel which can generate more interest and pride for the home fans. Football does this better than basketball or hockey I think, but no other primary American sport can compare to baseball in this way because they all have standardized playing fields.

The Marlins certainly could have created a more appealing logo and color scheme. Their new stadium is pretty in some ways but I likely wouldn't choose it over others because it's style doesn't represent how I relate to baseball. But I don't mind the modern/kitschy feel of the stadium. I'm more intrigued and amused by it than I am repelled.

I never want to look at that again. I categorize that under "Things to look at when I want to be ridiculed or kicked out of bed."

Rep for anyone who knows where that slightly paraphrased quote is from. :laughlol:

It's from Psych, though I can't remember what he was talking about when he said it.

This is interesting. If Miami's new uniforms and home run...thingy don't make sense to you, take a look at Miami's Art Deco culture. After you see these other examples, you still might find what they're doing unappealing, but it should make more sense.

That does put it into perspective. It also makes me never want to live in Miama.

What is that thing? Why does it exist? It isn't art deco so how does it fit into Miami? Did the Seminole casino have something to do with this? My bet says there are slots and possible hold'em tables in that thing.

Article: Look at that poor fool, slumped up against a wall in the fetal position, listening to the ungodly hum of the structure, wondering if there's a way to throw some sort of fabulous, multi-colored bone into the air so we can just cut to the next scene in space already

The neon is not what makes art deco. Well. Maybe a little.
