Oriole fans opinion of Mike Mussina

"Hey Peter. I just got a deal from the Yankees that I know you won't match, but I said I would call. K bye."

That would make you feel better?

Yes. All he had to do was call and go Mr Angelos are you willing to match 6/88.5? I need the answer now.

You say you are going to do something, you do it.

Pretty simple concept.

He was under no compulsion to say he would let the O's match.

You go back on your word, I lose a lot of respect for you.

What a crock. Mussina gave the Orioles a sweetheart deal in 1997, and when that contract was due to be up, offered to re-up on very fair terms. Angelos subjected him to unreasonable haggling, and when Mussina refused to put up with it and became a free agent, he was offered a much bigger deal that he had already offered to the Orioles. That's on Angelos.

Not denying anything about Angelos. The post was about Mussina being a deity if he had stayed in Baltimore. What did he get, 88 mil instead of 78 mil? He could have still lived pretty comfortably on the 78 mil and had a place and legacy in Baltimore that would never be possible in NY - and no amount of money could buy that for him. It was his choice and he chose the $$$ - thus the whore comparison. Thats the bottom line.

He went to NY for more $$$ and is nothing more than a guy who was a FA and whored his baseball skills to the Skankees for $$$$$$. And because of that he's just another guy who left one team and went to another. He didnt win anything in NY and to Skanks fans he's just another guy that was on the team - not even in a special way. Kind of like the girl who spent the night with Jeter and was pissed becasue he sent her home in the morning with his driver and had the gift basket for her with his autographed baseball - only this was her 2nd time and apparently he didnt remember the first time. Mussina is not much more than that to Skankee fans.

If he had stayed in Baltimore he would have been up there with Cal, Brooks, Palmer, etc. Money can never buy that place/status. He took the Skankee whore $$$$ and to us he is just another guy, except he was a Judas - and Angelos part makes no difference in the bottom line.

Mussina didnt get a ring. He got a few more dollars. He greatly diminished his potential status as an Orioles icon/legend. To us he would have always been part of the family. To the NY fans, he's just another whore.

You'd have done the exact same thing, "whore." And so would anyone else.

People on message boards are always willing to give away someone else's money.

This has been discussed many times on this board and people are very passionate one way or the other. Some folks feel that Mussina is the second biggest traitor in history behind Judas Iscariot, others think Angelos is at fault for not treating him fairly and letting him get away.

I'm firmly in the latter camp. I have nothing but respect and affection for Mussina, who at worst is the second-best pitcher ever to spend the majority of his career in an Orioles uniform, and arguably he is the best (but let's not rehash that debate now). I'd love to see him in the Hall of Fame and yes, I'd want him wearing an Orioles cap, though I doubt that's what he wants or what the Hall of Fame would do.

I agree with all of this.

He wanted 5 years, $62.5 mm to stay with the Orioles. He never would have become a free agent, never would have even listened to offers from other teams, if Angelos had given him that. Pathetic judgment on Angelos' part.

I dont know that I would have done the same thing - hard to say unless you are in the situation.

Im not giving anyone elses money away either - just stating the way it turned out.

Would you rather have a legacy and be adored by great fans + 78 million, or have 88 Million and have nobody really care about you as a baseball player one way or another?

Sadly, Angelos made it easy for him to choose the later. But, he could have chosen to stay here . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Well maybe he could've stayed with the Os and he'd been labeled a loser and be told that he didn't know how to win. And that would've cost him ten million dollars.

You will get no defense for PA from me - but it still doesnt change the bottom line. Here Mussina was special and would have been adored forever. Now, he gets none of that from either team or the fans. Maybe he could care less. Maybe he would do it differently if he could. Who knows.

I can tell you Yankee fans don't see Mussina as just another guy. He may not be on Jeter, Rivera, Pettitte, or Bernie's level.. but unlike many of the hired guns we brought in

like Randy Johnson, Kevin Brown, Carl Pavano... Mussina was a great Yankee and a fan favorite. He got a hell of a applause at the stadium when he threw out the first pitch on Opening Day last year.

    • I like Vazquez a little bit. I don't know how much he will hit at the upper levels, but he controls the strike zone, can run a bit, and is a good defender. He's got a utility player ceiling but for a 30K 20th round pick, he looks like a very nice org guy at the very least.
    • Well, he has hasn't done anything at the major league level yet and he still has defensive issues so we don't know whether he was a good 2nd round pick or not.  I think the bat is going to play at the major league level, but I see him more as a major league regular bat, with sketchy defensive traits until he can master corner outfield. But really my comment was more on the philosophy more than anything else. Looking at that draft, there's not a lot of guys who have made it to the majors or produced much in that 3-5 rounds yet.   It's hard to find signable high school talent after the first couple of rounds unless a team can go overslot, especially now that these top players can make pretty good NIL money in college. They know they ca have a good college experience, and play in front of packed crowds for the top programs, rather than taking long bus rides to Savannah, GA to play in front of 700 people on a Tuesday night.  So we're seeing a lot more college heavy drafts. Darrel Hernaiz is the only high school drafted player outside of the first round that has made the majors from an Elias draft.  Now Mayo should be the second, but he of course was a COVID draft overslot.
    • Mike Wright?   Ouch!
    • Whenever I get excited about the first two starts a pitcher has, I just remember Mike Wright, who pitched two seven inning shutouts out of the gate.
    • This reminded me of, in the 90’s, anecdotally, every year, Mussina would have at least one outing where he’d just get absolutely SHELLED.
    • If he throws that many hittable pitches in the heart of the plate against the Yankees (or any Major League team for that matter) he is likely to get a similar result.
    • Nick Pollack's write up mentioned the BABIP, though certainly watching that performance it was the kind of performance to make you think Voros McCracken and DIPS theory is hokum. I don't think it was random variation getting pummeled there last night.     Hopefully the Angels didn't find any cues the Yankees might also be able to benefit from.
