Kevin Gregg Didn't Lose The Game

The batting order really needs to be reshuffled. Too many low OBP guys up front. Wieters will bat #4 eventually I am sure. Markakis should bat #2. We don't have a #3 hitter, But in the absence of one we are better of with some combination of Betemit and Johnson in that spot. If you want to keep giving Reimold AB, he's better suited to the #9 spot for now.# 5,6,7, 8, should be Jones, Reynolds, Hardy, Davis.

You don't want Wieters too high in the lineup because he is the slowest runner in the major leagues. He's perfect in front of Reynolds and Davis because they either hit homeruns or strike out. Not too much hard running after their at bats:)

Both players are flawed. They are both solid major leaguers who are being asked to do too much do to the lack of talent around them. Right now Nick is a #2 and Jones should be a #6 or #5 when hot. If I had to pick one, it would be Jones although too close to nit pick really.

I don't really see how it is that close.

Jones has more power upside but he doesn't hit doubles like Nick does. He also has more speed although he doesn't utilize it in terms of SBs.

But Nick is the better all around defender and hitter. To me, its not even a thought...Nick is pretty clearly ahead of Jones IMO although I do agree that Jones was better last year.

BTW, Nick has also proven to be the more durable player.

Comparing defense is like comparing apples to oranges. Centerfield defense is much more important then right field defense. Nick may rank higher then Jones at his respective position but Jones plays a more important position. Jones was better last year as you say and Jones is young. I'm not giving up on him over one dumb@ss at bat. So I say Jones and recognize it could go either way.

1) No one is giving up on Jones.

2) Yes, CF is a more important position but Jones doesn't play his position that well. Nick does. Thus why I like Nick defensively over the Jones.

Since when did the bar for Adam Jones become "Frank Robinson, inner circle HOFer"?

Two issues with Buck's pen management: 1) Gregg was left in for two innings 2) Gregg was pitching at all in a high-leverage situation. You could reasonably conclude that the O's had their 6th or 7th-best reliever throwing against the Yanks in the key moments of a game.

With Lindstrom not available, who do you put in?

Don't worry. 3 more months of this. SportsGuy already has a trade lined up at the deadline. What we really need to do is replace Johnson as the closer with Gregg so he can rack up some saves.

First we need to petition the league to modify the save rule to 5 a run lead.

In 2010 (I don't have 2011 ratings) Nick was rated at average range and VG arm by Diamond Mind. Jones was ranked at VG range and VG arm. This means that Jones saves about 14 runs per year with his defense and Markakis saves about 2.

What I like is that Adam Jones immediately owned up to the poor AB if you read Roch's post-game post. He acknowledged swinging for the fences instead of trying to put the ball in play. I think he knows what he did wrong, and maybe he tries to chill out next time that opportunity shows itself.

Yeah, it sucked, but it was good to see that he knew what he did wrong.

I certainly prefer his comments happening in April to August.

Agree with the OP, I think we should've won it there in the bottom of the ninth. It's not all Gregg's fault, although i personally would prefer not to have him on the team. I understand we owe him 6 mil, but i don't think he is one of the 7 best relievers in this org... We have a host of guys in AAA who i think should get an opportunity, such as Bergesen, Tillman, Eveland, Galarragga, Neshek, etc.

See, this is still unacceptable to me. Jones knows he just needs a single. It's easier to hit a single than a HR. The bases are loaded. He has to throw you strikes. Shorten up your swing and drop in a single and win the game. Don't be bigger than the team. And for the love of God, if he's behind you 1-0 in the count do NOT swing at ball 2 in your eyes!

Very annoying.

    • Yeah, basically this, that Westburg's underlying numbers (EV, barrel %, xwOBA) seem to point at this being pretty real, or at least that there's nothing 'undeserved / lucky' about this hot streak, if it's just that.
    • The problem with a Cowser/Kjerstad/Stowers/Bradfield outfield roster is there are no right handers to handle LHP. I don't think and completely left handed outfield is the destination for an organization the values versatility.
    • Looks maybe concussion related.
    • How can you not be romantic about baseball? This seems slightly poetic. I enjoyed reading, and correlated your experience in the stands back to what I watch in Game 1 on MASN.  It was also pretty cool to hear Jim Palmer give you a shout out in Game 2 of the series on Live TV.
    • I am not worried.  It just doesn’t remotely meet the eye test.  He has been great in the field . I can think of at least 3 outstanding plays he has made and not any that I thought he should have gotten but didn’t. Meanwhile Holliday is 3 OAA and I can’t think of an outstanding play and can think of a number I thought he should have made.
    • Nicely stated Roy. Every since I was 9 years old and saw the O's vs. the Tokyo Giants in Tokyo in 1971, I've been infected with the Orange/Black virus. There is no cure and I don't want one. You and I sat at the lunch table with Jim Palmer at the 1970 World Series Champs reunion, and its still one of my enduring baseball memories. You said I looked like Carlton Fisk! I was at all 3 games in this Angels series, right behind the O's dugout. I got to see all our boys, and just simply love to watch this team play. And in true baseball fashion, the one game on paper we should have dominated (GRod vs. 8+ ERA Channing), we end up down 7-0 and lose. But watching Gunnar's homers, his electric triple, and he made a fantastic play today on a ball that went under Westburg's glove, Adley do Adley things, Cowser, holy crap. Kimbrel v. Trout with bases loaded, bottom of 9th, 2 outs, down by 2? That was fun. Next game Trout bats leadoff and torches a GRod fastball for a homer to the opposite field.  An observation.... If you didn't know anything about the team, and you only watched game 1 batting practice, you'd think Cowser and O'Hearn were the studs of the team. Mountcastle was taking BP with the reserves and he put on a show as well.  Home after 3 straight days watching this O's team, so jealous of the Balt fans in Balt that get to see the team with regularity. It's a special bunch.
