Twins to hold onto Santana?

On ESPN's daily blog from the meetings, Gammons says that the Twins might hold onto Santana:

12:15 p.m., from Peter Gammons

• Don't expect to see a Twins-Red Sox or Twins-Yankees whopper. The sense is now that Minnesota will hold onto Johan Santana.

True, this is Gammons, so it is probably wrong. But, if he is going to get one thing right, it would most likely be something on the Sox.

IF Santana is off the table, what does this do for Bedard's value?

He automatically becomes the most coveted arm on the board. But, do other teams no make plays for Johan first?

If anything, I think it hurts his value.

Boston isn't in one Bedard and we won't trade with them anyway apparently.

Plus, Santana was only going to NY or Boston anyway, so its not like other teams were secretly in on it.

So, teams see Boston turning down this package and maybe that hurts Bedard.

I would say Santana being off the market can only help the Orioles but they have to play it right. That would mean MacPhail sitting Angelos down and laying out the fact that the Orioles aren't within hailing distance of the Yankees and Red Sox so no need to worry about trading Bedard to one of them. Then, let the bidding war begin.

Just my personal opinion... I think AM ignores consequences here. I think he does the best deal he can get, irregardless if it happens to be in-division... and if it is, then goes back to Big Peter and tells him he thinks (Boston's) offer is the best. "We need to do this Pete, this offer is can't-pass-up." I'm not saying only Boston or NYY can offer the best deal... just that MacP is oblivious to who the best offer is from, just what the best offer is. He'll deal with PA when the times comes that he has to.

Even with the rumor that PA has said we can't deal in-division, I still believe AM is driving this thing, not Angelos.

EDIT: Good on the Twins! Stick to your guns! You'll have your 2 draft picks blossoming about 2012...

I think this is the result both the BoSox and NYY wanted.

If the Twins are competitive this year, they might lose JS for just draft picks.

I like the Twins and would like to see them compete again with a core of JS, Liriano, DYoung, Mauer and Morneau.

    • I would have kept Irvin over Povich.
    • I would have kept air in over Povich.
    • I saw Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band at Camden Yards Friday night and they strung together multiple hits. Best thing I've seen at Camden all summer. In their nonstop 3 1/2 hour performance they practically burned the place down with Bruce pushing 74 years old. Here's hoping the Orioles can rally themselves and produce some magic of their own as the season winds down. Spot on post by the way.

    • I think the downside scenario is more likely to resemble the recent Jays.   However, there is also a decent possibility that Red Sox and/or Yankees become dominant over the next few years.  I think the Red Sox young core (Durran, Roman Anthony, Casas, Rafaela, Abreu, Marcelo Mayer, Kyle Teel, Kristian Campbell, Miguel Bleis + Devers) is as good or better than ours and they are going to have a lot of payroll capacity.  The Yankees could return Cole and Soto along with Judge and good young pitching - even if the rest of the lineup is middling they will be tough.  As a result, I’m trying to enjoy the season and not to get too down despite it seeming like a slog.  As frustrating as it has been, it’s still better than being out of contention in September. I’m hoping that all of the Orioles Magic is just being saved up for the playoffs unlike last year.
