Plate umpire Jeff Kellogg received a loud cheer during the Baltimore Orioles' game against Oakland on Friday night when he tackled a streaker.

But the hit is unlikely to go down so well with Major League Baseball officials, who are likely to discipline Kellogg over the incident, The Baltimore Sun reported.

The bare-chested fan ran onto the field in the middle of the seventh inning during the Orioles' 5-2 loss, and headed down the third base line, sliding head-first into home plate.

He stood up and continued running, when Kellogg gave chase and tackled him from behind.

Kellogg refused to comment after the game, but Orioles center fielder Adam Jones commended the umpire for the action he took.

"I told him, 'That's awesome," Jones said. "I'm sick and tired of these guys running on the field, man."

It was the fourth time someone had run onto the Camden Yards field this season.

"I'd [advocate] that people get Tased. I'd enjoy that," added Jones, referring to the brand of stun gun. "You don't run on the field and just disturb a game that's going on. It's private property."

FWIW - Tasing can kill a person. I doubt that something MLB wants to take a chance with.

Then dont run on a field if you dont want to take that chance.

Cant we just resign Felix Pie and assign him to streaker retriever? These security guys could at least run to speed it up, they just walk toward them now.

Why the F do we keep having asswipe fans running on the field?

Seems like there has been an increase in fans running on the field since they started serving Natty Boh at the games...

I am in favor of taking these guys down hard, with or without tasers instead of doing the circle of love treatment to escort them off the field. If folks see other drunks being made examples of, they might just think twice.

I understand Mr Snuffleupagus' concerns but you are assuming the risk when your run onto the field.

Agreed. Plus if you publish that tasing may occur in such situations on signs, tickets, etc. then that removes liability from the Orioles or MLB and places it on fan that takes that risk. Furthermore, those that die from tasing are typically in poor shape or have a heart issue which isn't the typical types of people we see on the field.

because of the positive media attention "batman" got on opening day and the widespread reporting that he wasn't charged with anything.

Charge these idiots to the fullest extent of the law. People shouldn't know that someone didn't get charged for being a moron either.

FWIW - So can tackling someone if it is done in just the right way. If the law enforcement officers assigned to the game have Tasers, and they feel that their use is warranted, let 'er rip.

What would be your justification for using that level of force against a drunken idiot?

Just imagine the amount of "occupyers" that would invade the first stadium that used a level of force that gave the appearance of not treating everyone with complete dignity and like the individual was on a pedastal because they committed a crime.

I wish there was a more aggressive approach BCPD could take to stop these morons; but they handle it correctly.

Evidently some local TV station thought Opening Day Batman was worthy of an interview for his actions. Chalk that up as a contributing factor IMO.

    • I’d say Tampa.    I don’t want to see Arozarena in a playoff series. Ever. He kills us and I’m sure he’d go off on a big stage.  Their pitching is really good.
    • There's a new test called the S2 cognition test that is supposedly a better predictor of QB success rates than Wonderlic, which has a lot of high profile misses, Lamar included.  (Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, Steve McNair among others.)  S2 picked up on Brock Purdy being a possible diamond in the rough.  It started being taken around 2015, so its likely Lamar took it, but his score hasn't been publicized.   People made a big deal about it this past draft cycle because CJ Stroud did terribly on it apparenty.
    • The way I read this, anyone on the 40 man is eligible, even if they are in the minors. Then there are exceptions for players who aren't on the 40an. So yes, I am not expert in roster rules but I believe Grayson, Kjerstad etc could be optioned and still make the postseason roster as long as they stay on the 40 man roster.
    • If we’re just talking internal candidates then I think it’s pretty easy to put something accurate together. Personally, I don’t believe for a second that Holliday has a real chance at breaking OD. I think Urias at 3B, Henderson at SS, and Westburg at 2B is the most likely every day configuration if they’re not adding anyone significant from outside the organization.   If we start talking about potential moves for outside players then this gets a lot more dicey, but fun. Personally, I’d like to see two mid-rotation starters added. Give me something like Jordan Montgomery and Logan Gilbert. Tell me that a rotation of Rodriguez, Bradish, Montgomery, Gilbert, and Means is not one of the most balanced rotations in baseball. Insert similar names for the additions, I’m not particularly hung up on specifics right now. That’d push Wells and Kremer to the BP full time.  Id probably resign both Fuji and Hicks, if he’s interested. That leaves a bullpen with something like Cano, Fuji, Webb, Coulombe, Hall, Wells, Kremer, and Perez. I gotta agree about Bautista, unfortunately.    Big if, but if we are thinking that Holliday is a legit consideration then I’d be moving Urias. Mateo seems like a easy DFA. Ortiz can be the backup infielder. I may even consider moving Urias anyways and slotting Ortiz at SS until Holliday is ready.    Anyways, that’s really just an addition of a couple mid rotation starters (one through FA, one through trade), an okay bullpen addition, and possibly a veteran presence if Hicks is okay with a backup role in the OF. I don’t really feel the veteran presence is totally necessary, but judging by offseasons of the past, Elias finds it very necessary no matter how redundant the piece may be.    Also, there’s no room for all of Hays, Mullins, Santander, Cowser, Kjerstad, and Stowers. I’m thinking at least one of these OF guys can be part of the aforementioned trade for a mid rotation starter. Does something like Kjerstad, Basallo, and Urias get Gilbert? I dunno…getting too specific now.
    • Adley’s going to reach base 250+ times this season.  Joe Mauer did that 4 times.  Mike Piazza did it twice. Johnny Bench once. Buster Posey never did.  Neither did Carlton Fisk, Gary Carter, Yadier Molina,  Jorge Posada or Ivan Rodriguez.
    • That would certainly explain why O’Hearn is not allowed to hit against a LHP ever.
    • I don’t think it will need to happen. I can see them DFA guys or just option guys they know won’t be on the postseason roster. Jorge Lopez is a perfect example of this.
