Josh Hamilton hits 2 more (so far) vs. LAA

My point was that in 2006 the Orioles organization was so thin in the outfield that we wasted 400+ ABs on a 40 year old LF Jeff Conine and another 250 ABs on 25 year old Brandon freaking Fahey, who between them gave us a grand total of 9 HRs and 72 RBI. That winter 25 year old former phenom and recovering drug addict Josh Hamilton announced he was going to get clean and try to get back in to baseball. His rights belonged to Tampa, but they left him off the 40 man so the Cubs scooped him up for a measly $50,000 in the Rule 5 draft, and then turned around and sold those rights to the Reds for $100,000. We could have outbid the Reds with Peter's pocket change and taken a risk on Hamilton doing another crash and burn, with the upside being that the moment he put on the uniform Josh would have been bar none the most talented player in the entire system. But of course the geniuses who ran this team decided it was better to pay Jay Payton $10 million for two years (14 HRs and 99 RBI in those two seasons) while dropping another 200 outfield ABs on Fahey and the immortal Tike Redman.

What a joke this organization was at the time.

Of course you have no idea how high the Reds might have gone for him. Just because they got him for 100K doesn't mean they were not willing to go a lot higher if needed.

How high would you have been willing to go on Hamilton? Try and be realistic with the figure, remember he had serious drug issues.

It also tells you the Cubs were willing to sell the contract for that low of a price. Maybe Andy MacPhail would have given his pal Pete Angelos a deal at the time, that is, if he asked for one.

He broke his bat. He is no longer on pace for 85.
