Interesting tweet from Denver Bundy

I totally agree it's time to move him up, but I still don't buy the "catch up" argument. Kyleott, where did you get that info? If his change up is 90 something miles an hour then he's going to get lit up as he moves higher. Here's a report about his change up on one scouting site: "Changeup is a good pitch with room for improvement; sits in the upper 70’s and very low 80’s; should also become above-average pitch". Baltfan, the ONE he threw was almost hit out of the park? I think it is far more likely that it was a weak offering or telegraphed than the "speeded up the bat" idea. Again, I think he should move up, but this whole change up idea seems far fetched to me. Weak hitters tend to be more susceptible to good fastball - change up combinations, not less. It makes far more sense that the change up that got hammered was not a great pitch.

Either that's an old report based on HS velo, or he is heavily decelerating his arm to throw that change-up. I'm leaning towards the former...

Not going to speculate, just thought it was an interesting tweet this morning.

Just because his change up sits in the upper 80s (which I'm pretty sure it does), doesn't mean it is automatically a bad pitch. If you were watching on Sunday, the Orioles lineup had their fair share of issues with Strasburg's change up (a comparable pitcher, in terms of velocity), and that pitch was consistently 90, and as high as 91. There are other factors, for example, the movement of the pitch. As long as he is around 8 mph different with his change, I'm comfortable that the expectation of 95+ will keep hitters plenty off balance.

This is a separate issue, but probably a valid one. Bundy possesses a potential plus-plus off-speed offering in his cutter and a potential plus offering in his curve (which also serves to change eye level). You could argue that a CH really isn't a necessary pitch for Bundy.

The counter, I imagine, would be that the change is easier on the arm than the curve and provide different break from the cutter.

Finally, as is the case with Bauer from last year's draft class, the Bundy's spent a lot of time learning about the art of pitching and working with advisors and "experts" in crafting appropriate developmental approach for Dylan in HS. It isn't wholly surprising that Denver would have questions about how Dylan is being developed if it's something different than the family has done in the past. Also, that's not to say that this expression of some confusion/frustration is necessarily anything more than blowing off some steam.

Judging from his tweets earlier, I'm thinking that Bundy just had a great deal of success, and then had to deal with some adversity for the first time in his professional career and his dad vented is all.

That said, I do 100% agree with his sentiment (if not the way he expressed it). If you want him to throw his off-speed pitches and work on developing them, he needs to be in a position where it's necessary. He only got burned when he tried to force it against Hagerstown, so he needs to go up to Frederick or Bowie, and honestly, get knocked around a little. He's a smart kid with a hell of a work ethic and a great arm to match. He'll figure it out pretty quickly, but now that he's had a bit of success, the team needs to force the issue, IMO.
